McDowell holds total disdain for this film, that's why I also find it interesting they got him to say anything about this film - I bet it's going to be an utter bashing of the film. I've never read anything in print or online about Mirren's opinions of the final film, that's why I am very interested in hearing her thoughts and comments. To bad, Vidal wasn't allowed to chime in his opinions either, have a three way round table two hour conversation with a moderator, and I bet they'd have rivetting stories.

I think so (well almost). IIRC it was "a revised version that approximated the original Director's Cut".

Other than being fascinated by four-disc sets dedicated to one film, this is the other reason why this is a must-buy for me. I hope the audio commentary is on par with that of Mickey Rooney in his episode of the Twilight Zone ("Last Night of a Jockey" I believe) in the definitive season set of TZ. He comes off as hilariously old, bitter and set in his ways, referring to the episode as nonsense essentially. It has to be heard to be believed. When it's all said and done, I expect this commentary from McDowell to be one for the ages!

I betcha they're gonna be "Interview" commentaries. I'd be surprised as hell if they had to sit down on comment on the Unrated cut.

Then again, they could easily do one for the Rated cut since that one's extremely tame. Has anyone here ever seen that version?

I've always liked watching it after I finish "I, Claudius" for a different perspective on the character. Such a twisted film.

I've always preferred the image on the poster I have in my hallway.

Peter O'Toole is the is the diseased face looking on. The figures are Malcolm McDowell and Teresa Ann Savoy. Mine is South American, but it's entirely in English with just a note at the bottom that it's for "S.A."

For the record, my screen-name is a knock off of the title of Robert Graves' Claudius the God. When Caligula declared himself a god he was at his maddest.

Can't speak for McDowell but Helen Mirren participated in a rather surreal faux-trailer for a re-make of Caligula for an art exhibit last year. Gore Vidal even participated in it, as did Milla Jovovich, Gerard Butler, and Courtney Love(!) as the titular emperor. You can find it on YouTube. So it shows that Helen is in on the joke.

For those interested in the HD version, Digital Bits is reporting that:
Image Entertainment also informed us at the show that Caligula will be released in both HD formats later in 2007 or early in 2008, along with additional titles to be named.

It seems that is now a 3 disc set only. Rumors are that the 4th disc was the movies' soundtrack and Penthouse or Image didn't have all the rights.

No big deal about the soundtrack. I wouldn't have touched it anyway. And hopefully they DO knock a bit off the price -- that would be amazing (but unlikely, right?).

Definitely re-thinking this new release of Caligula 3 disc set.

The 1 disc unrated is (currently) around the $14 mark - whilst the 3 disc is around the $28 mark - (the Image website shows a price difference of $20 between the two sets !!).

With the running times the same between these two versions - the differences are the 'special features' - making ofs and interviews. For double the current price of the single disc - I think I'll be waiting for further discounting of this set - can't see it being a limited edition.

whats everyone elses opinion on the pricing of this new edition ?

^ I want it but dont want to pay $28 for it. I don't want the 1-disc version though. So I will probably ante up the dough. Good thing is, there isn't a long wait until the November Deep Discount 20% off sale, so that knocks another $5.xx off the price. I think I could part with $23 for the 3-disc set.

DVDBeaver has a review up. There are explicit screenshots, but are blackened out until you mouse over them.

DVDBeaver is unimpressed but they don't compare to the previous DVD which is atricious. Looks much much cleaner and brighter.

I don't have the disc with me but from what I see on the screen caps it isn't bad at all. I will buy the rumored Blu-Ray release and will most definitely rent the DVD version to see how it compares to the French disc. I must admit however that the caps seem a bit too dark. I am unsure whether or not this has to do with how they were taken/posted or whether it is the actual print.

Regardless, I think that this SE is good news for those who like the feature. The previous Image/Penthouse release was quite poor.
