I don't know about the rest of you but just about everytime I go out I find an OOP title that I turn around for a profit. So, although I spend money, I know I am also making money. And by no means do they own me. The second a movie is of any value it is off to Ebay. I don't know how many copies of Fletch I sold over the years but alas, it is in my collection again. I figure the big movies will always be rereleased in some format. So why hold onto something that will eventually be worthless when you can make some $$$ instead?

for me this has happened several times, coincidentally each time after the kids were born. so let me tell you how to play this out

pick out about 20-50 you really could care less about, and sell them one by one on ebay. show her the auctions and their progress at first

she will see that you are meeting her criteria in actually selling them and for her it is a sign that you were listening to her and making a compromise.

in a month or 2 when the 20-50 are sold she will hopefully forget all about it . you will at least have a little money, then take her out to a nice dinner with it

"Well, honey, they don't take up as much space as my guns.

Hey, want to go for a walk in the woods?"

She would never presume to tell me what I can and can't do with my own money or hobbies, and I would certainly never tell her she couldn't indulge in her own hobby (in this case, she's a Barbie collector).

As long as DVD collecting is not causing some kind of finacial disaster in your family, stand up for yourself and tell her it's your hobby, it's what you want to do, and you enjoy it. Would you seriously let someone else, even a loved one, take away something you enjoy just to satisfy themselves?

I would simply tell her to mind her own fucking business but there's a reason why I'm currently not married. Personally I wouldn't sell my DVDs just because someone told me too or they didn't like how many DVDs I have. I would marry someone to be happy with but shes not my mother (or Grandmother) so she can't tell me what to do.

As long as your not borrowing money from the mafia or borrowing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the bank just to live half decently I think your fine & I would tell her that there is no reason for you to sell off your DVD collection.

I happily co-sign these two posts. Grow a pair, dude.

Spoiler:
If she's ridiculously hot however....

Ouch!

You should hit up the pawn shops instead, for a 10 for $30 deal!
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. My local one does $3 per film, including a lot of special sets. I picked up Naruto season 1 for $3.33 and Wonderfalls The Complete Series for $3.50 at one and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang SE (2-disc) for $3 and the 3-disc Black Hawk Down for $3 at another. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Used is always the way to go if you're in a tight spot and saving money, or just hate the fact that your films lose more than 50% of their value the instant you open it.

Also, according to his figures he spends about $138 a month on dvds. That's not bad.

Sounds like my wife. Only thing is I'm not being forced to unload mine (yet). She never wants to watch movies she's already seen.

some people ask "Why would you want to buy a movie that you watch once?" (a presumption)
People buy books-these probably get re-read less than DVDs.
They buy CDs-though music seems to be "alright" to own and to listen to more regularly.

Ah yes, this old thread.

When I first saw this thread, and even now, here is what I'm reminded of:

My local pawn shops are offering 10 for $20 - I just can't resist and end up walking out with 20 whether I need them or not. They make good gifts or trade fodder or ebay. My GF agrees.

Maybe his wife banned him from visiting DVD related sites as well.

I think the real issue is that Wannabe just spends way too much money on entertainment and his wife finally caught on. I don't think he all of the sudden had an epiphany on how DVD's were bad and ruining his marriage after his wife opened up his closet and started yelling at him.

I think he's the type of person that goes to Best Buy, Circuit City or Target every single Tuesday and picks up all the new releases and probably a few as blind buys and just throws them in his closet and forgets about them. I know someone at work who does this every week and literally spends money like water. He probably never rents movies and probably sits at his PC all day ordering shit off Deep Discount DVD. Probably his wife opened a few credit card statements and kept seeing $300-400-500 charges at Best Buy etc and one thing led to another. I personally think it's his own damn fault for getting into the predicament he got himself into.

My wife said the same thing to me. I went out and bought $400 shelves. True story.

As a woman, I will chime in and tell you it has nothing to do with the DVD collection, it has to do with something you are doing. She sounds passive aggressive to the extreme. That being said, I fail to see why so many men allow women to castrate them, it is fucking pathetic. If you allow her to get her way, it won't stop with your DVDs.

I have over 3500 dvds. My wife was starting to hate them because of the space. I told her that I'm not getting rid of them. But I finally did agree to buy cd/dvd wallets and put all the dvds in them to save space. I also took out the covers and stored them away.

My wife has continually complained about my DVD collection...but she complains about everything....so with me it just goes in one ear and out the other. I have just told her that at least i don't drink (well only on occassion) or smoke. I just continue to buy the films i want and she just gets more pissed. My wife is very conscious of money (she gets it from her parents), and she ignores the fact that i have a reasonable amount in my savings account and i treat her to plenty of meals at good places(funny i never hear complaints about those). There has to be give and take in a relationship. As long as you are not spending beyond your means, or you are being anti-social due to your hobby then i don't see anything wrong with it.
