Why do you collect DVD's?

Just a simple question because I am curious to know why?

I am not quite sure myself.

matome 06-07-07 08:10 AM

Pretty simple for me. So I can watch whatever I want, whenever I want. No downloading, no waiting for discs in the mail or driving to the store.

bossman284 06-07-07 08:12 AM

Because I have a mental defect! Most likely some kind of compulsive disorder...but I guess there are worse things to be addicted to!

Yavin 06-07-07 08:15 AM

Because if I don't then the money in my wallet will burn a hole right through my pants. I'd rather spend the money on dvds than on a new pair of pants.

For example the other night I saw the trailer for Jodi Fosters new movie, and it reminded me of Death Wish. I then wanted to watch Death Wish. Reached up on the shelf, and that was it.

EdTheRipper 06-07-07 08:23 AM

Basically so I can watch whatever I feel like watching whenever the urge hits.

Maxflier 06-07-07 08:25 AM

I don't know. After I bought that very first DVD, it was like I couldn't wait to buy another one and I have had a DVD buying addiction ever since.

Bandit03 06-07-07 08:39 AM

I just love collecting them. Everybody needs a hobby and collecting DVD's is my hobby.

starseed1981 06-07-07 08:40 AM

Because it's my only hobby. Besides drinking of course.

Brian Shannon 06-07-07 08:41 AM

I "collect" what I like to watch repeatedly.

Based on what I see here I don't have much of a collection.

kaze0 06-07-07 08:42 AM

It gets me laid out.

canaryfarmer 06-07-07 08:54 AM

Mr. Cinema 06-07-07 09:03 AM

Not really collecting for me, I just love alot of movies and I want to own them. I may not get to watching some of them for several weeks/months, but at least I know they're there when I'm ready to watch.

nateman 06-07-07 09:06 AM

Because I love TV shows & Movies and besides Coffee its my only addiction.
I can watch what I want when ever the hell I damn well please & I love going to the stores to pick up new DVDs every tuesday.

Holysmoker 06-07-07 09:13 AM

So my friends can ask if they can borrow them. Why else?

Ditto. I buy movies I like enough to own as I'll rewatch them over the years.

So I guess one could say I collect movies I like, but I wouldn't say that I collect DVDs. Probably why I'm still somewhere around 250 DVDs when I've been buying them since 1998.

SoSpacey 06-07-07 09:23 AM

collecting body parts was getting messy

Giles 06-07-07 09:27 AM

because my life has to revolve around street dates and 'new release' Tuesday... (this also applies to my ever expanding CD collection - which threatens to overtake the entire house).

Matthew Ackerly 06-07-07 09:35 AM

Movies are an obsession and DVD's satisfy the urge. And they're friggin awesome. Nuff said.

I'm a completist and I like owning all the films from my favorite directors.

that too... :D

wildman1037 06-07-07 10:15 AM

Because I had too much empty space in my house... :D

Cardiac161 06-07-07 10:22 AM

I love movies, they are my escape. Some people collect porn, action figures, pubes, cars, video games....I collect films that I love.

I guess it's a better vice than drugs.

Mikael79 06-07-07 10:24 AM

I have a collector's mentality, and I love films, so it's a natural thing for me. Also, I'm very happy with the DVD format (I never liked VHS, and I only had a few) so I was hooked ever since I bought my first one.

Raw_and_Vital 06-07-07 10:28 AM

When I watch a movie, I am totally zoned out. I seriously don't even remember that i'm sitting on a couch in my living room watching a DVD. That's how much I am zoned out. It's like I get absorbed in the movie itself for that 2 hours. Unless it sucks. I collect because it's like being there experiencing what is going on in that movie. If I watch evil dead I am in that house where the dead are attackign a man with a chainsaw. If I am watching Jurassic Park I am on that island with dinosaurs mauling people.

It's not just an addiction and an urge. That's only 50% why I collect dvd's. The other 50% is because it's like an escape and a natural high being there for 2 hours as the movie plays out.

Anyone else like this?

dom56 06-07-07 10:30 AM

Because it's better than VHS which is good enough for me. :)

scottp120 06-07-07 10:35 AM

I have slown down a lot over the past years, mainly because I'm running out of room. I started out buying only my favorite movies and then when something would be on sale or something looked interesting I would buy it. Now I have a lot of DVDs (many that are unopened) and some I wonder why I even bought.

islandclaws 06-07-07 10:39 AM

I've always been a collector and film has always been a passion of mine, so it just feels... right. I love knowing I can watch anything I want anytime I want to.

MetalGator311 06-07-07 10:54 AM

Packaging can look really nice on certain Director's Cut, Special Edition, Limited Edition etc and stand out to the bare bones release the non-collector buys because of price, but really it comes down to I love movies and they seem like a worthwhile thing to own

When my family got our DVD player I was in middle school and the VHS "collection" was stuff I had outgrown. I think I had maybe 10 (probably) movies I liked on VHS. Somehow DVD made owning movies seem worthwhile. My collection really took off thanks to the DDD sales, that and Blockbuster movie pass allowing to expose myself to a wide variety of new films just out of curiosity.

Damn I thought it was only me -wink-

horroru 06-07-07 11:43 AM

I enjoy owning DVDs because:

1. I watch what I buy multiple times, so the value is high for me.
2. I like having the definitive version of my favorite movie available for me to watch whenever I want -- I don't have to worry about a movie going out of print due to rights issues, or movies losing the original songs/music due to royalty issues, or a particular cut of a film not being available, etc.

When you don't own a movie, you're at the whim of what the studio does with it-- for example, maybe Columbia will only allow streaming/download/rental of The Professional the US cut instead of Leon: The Professional Uncut.
A bit paranoid maybe, but we've all seen the studios do crazy things with their properties, so I tend not to trust them....

gimmepilotwings 06-07-07 11:47 AM

Because I can pay less to own the DVD than see it in theatres. Simple as that.

But then where do you go to listen to teens curse constantly on cell phones and babies cry :scratch2:?

I collect because I love debt!!!!

pagansoul 06-07-07 12:12 PM

I have always collected something. Since childhood small plastic animals to Matchbox to HO to car kits. Comic books to paperbacks to Graphic Novels. Movie cards, magazines, and action figures. Shoes, bags, rings. Records, tapes, CDs, DVDs. I walk through my house and know I have too many toys. I try to give away or sell every now and again. My one good trait is that I am very organized and everything has a place or box or room. My quest, before I die, is not to leave too much stuff for my family to go through and that what is left behind will be easy to pass on. DVDs are without a doubt the most fun I have ever had in collecting.

DVDMagic 06-07-07 12:19 PM

Started getting into movies when I wsa in College and majored in Media, since then it kinda took a hold of me. Besides, I'd rather spend money on something I can keep and have at hand then spend all of it down the bars etc. It's my one sole hobby so to speak

Not really that simple, as you could Netflix or rent elsewhere rather than cby and collect DVDs.

fletchtb 06-07-07 12:37 PM

I collect so that I can watch the movies I want when I want to (obvious), but I also collect the movies that I would want my kids to see when they grow up. They might never get to see Shawshank Redemption without seeing it on DVD (or having TNT on cable/satellite).

Its is also great to watch a great movie with a friend of family member that they have never seen before and hear them ask how they missed it when it was released.

Ginwen 06-07-07 12:57 PM

I like movies, and I like to have the movies I like to watch anytime I want. There are a lot of movies I like so I have a lot of DVDs. Also there are a lot of movies I want to see that aren't readily available to rent or to see at theaters by my house, so that adds more to the total.
