Will there ever be an option to see all your collection with cover art?

This would be something you would have to request in the DVDSpot forum to Croy, the site designer.

I think the reason that something like this hasn't been put into effect has been to cut down on the use of bandwidth. If you have a large collection, a list like that could take awhile to load and if the page is loaded frequently, it would wreak havoc on bandwidth.

Here's another vote for DVD Spot. Call me shallow, but aesthetics mean a lot to me, even on a DVD cataloguing system.

Pretty cool lookin, but no way would I pay 40 bucks for it. Plus it would take FOREVER to take a photo of every single barcode on my DVDs.

Even if it was like... 500 titles. This way you could divide your collection into genres and still they'd generally not top the 500 mark (of course many would, but the majority wouldn't, I'm even nearing 500 in the horror genre). Maybe this'd require smaller pics to make it more reasonable. At least the gentleman from DVD Spot is talking to us rather than having his ass kissed on his own forum like that Ed guy.

Well, even the editors at DVDSpot disagree with some sections of the site (I'm quite vocal about the soundtrack set-up... I hate it) and we ain't afraid to say. Thankfully Croy takes a lot of ideas on board:) Like I said earlier, if we all liked the same thing the world would be a boring place. I used to be on Profiler but was getting bored of having 1000 updates each week etc, and I still keep my Profiler file as a back-up. I have also used dvdaf in the past and was very pleased with it, but am happy with the stats and community at DVDSpot.

I love Profiler 3.0. Not even a choice of using anything else. Easy web access right through the program, or you can use an add on, like you can see in my link below which gives you more customization options.

You can divide your collection into genres (or whatever other criteria you'd like) by the use of their filter system. I've set up filters in my collection by genre as well as other things like DVDs I haven't seen or need to watch.

I used to want a big long list of all of my DVDs and was a little disappointed that DVDSpot didn't have something like that when I first joined up. However, after using it for a bit, I quickly got over that and just enjoyed using the site.

SamDVDCompare 06-06-07 08:22 AM

You don't even need to set up filters really. You can just go to advance search and bring up all horror. You can even use sub-genre search and bring up all 'zombie' or 'supernatural' films.

BuckNaked2k 06-06-07 08:38 AM

I don't like 2.0 either, but I do suspect that it will get better with time. Do those guys read these boards???

I liked Profiler, but gave that up when they disabled all the features on the freeware version.

I also have a Spot account, but it needs updating badly! Guess, I have some work ahead of me.....

old-boo-radley 06-06-07 08:53 AM

Yeah, I understand that, I was just still referencing the picture idea. The cool thing is DVDSpot can filter for you, but sometimes people consider different movies different genres, so that's why I started making my own.

I will probably post on the DVDSpot forum about the 500 pictured titles per page, but I'm sure it's a bandwidth issue so it'll get shot down. But, I'm sure eventually it'll happen and when it does, DVDSpot will get the ol' two thumbs up from this whiner about a free service. ;)

Agree 100% on DVD Profiler. Nothing else really even compares IMO. I also have some of my collection in DVD Spot, but they dropped the ball on accepting 10-digit UPC's (they did allow it, then it didn't work), so I stopped putting in new DVD's into DVD Spot. I asked 3 or 4 times if they were going to fix the code to make it work with 10-digit UPC's again, but there was no response (well, I did get a response, but it never got fixed)

Since DVD Profiler 3.0 now has gone to 12-digit UPCs, I can put the rest of my collection into DVD Spot.

aJOHNymous 06-06-07 09:28 AM

another disgruntled DVDaf user here. Over the past two days, I've been switching my entire collection over to DVDSpot. Logged into 2.0 once it went live and guess what? Not one single title was transferred over from the old site. I'm not going to play the "migration waiting game" either. No way am I going to re-enter everything into 2.0 just to be disappointed with the how it turns out later. I check out DVDSpot after reading this thread and I'm now a convert. Hell, I even contributed a new title (Pride FC - Hardcore Knockouts: Vol. 1) yesterday and it was accepted into their catalog almost immediately!

But a few gripes -

1. too many listing for the same title from the same region with the same image. Perfect example - "A Clockwork Orange". I'm not adding by UPC ( I don't have that kind of time) so I'm adding titles off of the image, info, region, and the amount of members who also have the same title and going with what the majority has shared. At first glance, it seems there needs to be a lot of title merging.

2. The thing I loved about DVDaf was that I could add sub-categories to my wishlist. Currently I had it split into "To Buy" and "To Watch". I loved having an always accurate movie queue in my "To Watch" list that I could reference and update whenever I borrowed, rented, or watched a movie. I'd love to be able to split my wishlist at DVDSpot into something like this. I suppose I could use the "Movie Night" list as my queue but I want to exhaust all of my other options before I do that.

Save for those two issues, I'm much happier with DVDSpot hosting my collection.

The database is and always will be UPC-centric but work is under way (which may take a long long time) to make the stats more title-centric. I would hate it if we had to merge the titles where only the UPC is different. So much so I would probably leave as an editor (;)).

Would that require some massive redesign or just a lot of work? I mean, the main reason for this is that video stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video get their own barcodes for DVDs, or sometimes the studio will change something small, like putting a snapper DVD in a keep case. It would be nice to see the titles merged, and if it's just a lot of work, I'm still all for it, but I suppose I don't need or want anyone to go recoding the entire site just to fix this little problem.

You can make filters for your wishlist (and any DVD in your collection). I have a "Have Not Seen" filter (http://www.dvdspot.com/list.php?filter=1940992350) for my Owned DVDs that I haven't seen. It's not limited to JUST owned DVDs. You can make filters for Wishlists that you really want. Around Christmas time, I usually make a filter for gift ideas.

thanks for the tip, Spez. I had not yet explored that option. Very helpful!

smashthesymbols 06-06-07 06:19 PM

How is DVDSpot with submissions? I've moved my collection over there but found a couple things not listed. I submitted one already, and a cover art update on another, but I don't want to mess with doing a bunch if they'll just be ignored or rejected. Also, I have a few where the title is listed, but mine has a different UPC. Should those be submitted?

EDIT: The first part of my question is answered. The new title and the cover update have both been accepted already. Still wondering about the UPC issue though.

I have to agree DVDspot.com is what I use and I love it.

Indeed. If it is the same as an edition already in the database, just clone that one (detailed instructions are available in the forum if needed) and change the UPC to the new one. Add a brief note letting the editor know it is from Hollywood/Blockbuster etc. just to make it easy to confirm its existence (since something like a UPC search on Google isn't likely to turn up every UPC a title has been released under).

Thanks. Looks like I have a few more to submit then.

DVDSpot is awesome with submissions. Usually analyzed and accepted within a half-hour. I submitted and got approved a good chunk of the Blu-Rays on that site in one sitting.

I agree fully. I've had 345 submissions successfully accepted and usually within a short time span.
