You can now add photographs, Youtube clips, and blogs to your DVDAF page.

Did they just turn DVDaf into Myspace?

TomOpus 08-05-08 06:09 PM

I don't have any DVDAF friends :(

You have the option to turn off everything if you want to but I'd suggest giving it a try. You can post new DVDs you've gotten, video reviews, see what you're friends have bought, etc.

dkny75 08-06-08 10:14 AM

How do you add people?

clckworang 08-06-08 02:33 PM

I can't believe I just read through this entire thread

I never used DVDAf. I have always been a DVD Profiler guy. Anyway, I am a paid member, contributor, whatever you want to say there, so I don't have any usage limits. What I am wondering is if any of you feel like there are features that DVDSpot offers that DVD Profile does not? Any advantage to moving over my collection of about 1500 to Spot?

dkny75 08-07-08 10:27 AM

I use DVDProfiler as my main database but use DVDAF and Spot as backups. I still like the features on Profiler better than the other two.

I would say no. I switched my collection of around 1000 from dvdaf to dvdspot a few years back, it was a huge hassle, and I ended up switching back in a couple months since DVDspot seemed to suck. It was/is a pain to add titles, and the level of management available pails in comparison to dvdaf, in my opinion. But I am pretty anal and have my colllection (now closer to 3000) broken up into all sorts of folders and changed the sort order on some of them.

I would say the only thing dvdspot has going for it are the statistics, like total msrp, most collected actors, directors and whatnot.

But the new additions to DVDaf over the past couple days are great. The one guy running the entire site, not the soulless corporation like somebody thought earlier, has pretty much worked out all the kinks from the change to 2.0, and has been adding a lot of new features. Statistics could be coming soon.

clckworang 08-07-08 02:40 PM

The statistics sound interesting. But I don't think I want to know what the MSRP of my entire collection is!

DVD Profiler has something similar via a plug-in. It gives you those statistics, plus a whole lot more. You can get statistics on pretty much any field available.

ParadiseVendors 08-08-08 07:36 PM

So I have been adding my stuff to dvdspot over the past couple days, a very slow and tedious process. But after talking about the statistics I got curious about what they would be for my collection. Expecially the msrp one. It is around $40,000 right now and I am about 60% done. It seems like the adding titles process is a lot quicker at dvdaf, but maybe that is just because I have used it for like 6 years now so I am used to it.

Actually, it gives me great satisfaction to glance at my total MSRP and know I paid half of that.

I honestly miss guzzlefish.

What is this plug-in that you speak of? Is this something I get through DVDProfiler?

I might know that I paid a lot less than the MSRP, but even at half the MSRP, that might be a little more than I need to know.

is simple statistics what you are looking for?

NoirFan 08-21-08 07:38 PM

Ed, the DVDAf head, posted this in his microblog:

FilmAf is coming - part 1: I wanted to give people a heads up so they can help me think about filmaf which is coming in a few months. The idea is to separate content from media, and then represent editions (a DVD for example) by selecting a media type and adding content. This will enable us to start playing with things like film recommendations and contrasting editions. It will also enable us to expand stats to directors, actors and such... including support for keywords and multiple genres
I'm not really sure what most of that means, but expanded statistics would be a great addition.

No, the new plug-in is Database Query. With all due respect to the author of Simple Statistics, Database Query blows it out of the water. And then some. This one allows you to query every database field available to plug-ins.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that it's actually my plug-in. But it's been very well received. You should check it out.
