Operation DVD -- Send Your DVDs to the Troops

From USA Today:

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) — Former longtime Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon is urging people to donate DVDs for U.S. troops in Iraq, saying movies offer a safe and comforting escape from wartime realities.

"This program accomplishes two things: the troops are entertained and they know that citizens at home care and support them," McMahon, 84, said Wednesday during ceremonies at the Palm Springs Airport's USO facility.

Operation DVD collects new and used DVDs to distribute overseas to U.S. military personnel. The year-old program has already collected more than 250,000 DVDs.

"This war in Iraq is unusual because soldiers never know where the next attack will come from. They need a safe mode of recreation since they become potential targets playing soccer or softball outdoors," said McMahon, a retired Marine officer who flew artillery-spotting missions in the Korean War.

Operation DVD began when a soldier approached the Rev. Scott Dryden in Kansas last May requesting parishioners donate books and DVDs for fellow troops overseas. The group American Veterans — AMVETS — then signed on to the project.

Robert Boots, California spokesman for Operation DVD, said the goal is to eventually have 1 million DVDs distributed to U.S. troops with more than 200 titles in rotation at each base.

"The least we can offer them is some DVDs for entertainment so they can escape their realities for a while," Boots said.

Collection boxes are located nationwide at schools, retail stores, churches, and government offices.

I'm sure most of us can find a few titles in our collections to donate.

Hell I've got plenty double dipped titles I'd gladly give up to the troops.

Yes, I think everyone has a few that can be spared. I wonder if Blockbuster/Netflix/any other rental places have helped out...

Too bad I didn't know about this a couple of weeks ago. I just dropped off 20+ DVDs at my local library and it'll probably be awhile before I clean house again...

From their FAQ:

What kind of movies do you want?

All types of films — motivational, inspirational and especially films that inspire a sense of family and moral values.

Something tells me this isn't the type of movie most soldiers would want. Back when I was on a ship in the Navy, I would help out the TV studio guys on duty days running movies. I'd ask for requests and would always get stuff like Bloodsport.

Guess that means I shouldn't send them a bunch of porn huh?
Darn, I figured they'd really like that.

Christ .. sounds like the vast right wing at its finest!!! Why couldn't they just leave it alone and concentrate on what they're trying to accomplish. I should send 'em my copy of Visitor Q. That oughta heat 'em up!!!

Either way, excellent idea as I have quite a few that I would contribute, maybe .. [ack]censorship[/ack]

Yeah, I have some double-dips that I don't know if they would make it into the hands of the troops: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Zombie, Ringu, Showgirls, Oldboy and Saw.

Not a double-dip but I also have Speed 2. Not sure if I want to subject our fighting men/women to that after what they've been going through

Yeah, let's make them more comfortable so they want to stay even longer and get killed and kill more Iraqis. Great thinking.

Believe me, being able to watch a few movies is NOT a reason to want to stay away family/friends and stay in harm's way.
