I found this used for $10, but I haven't seen the other two films in Ray's 'Apu' trilogy. I do know these film sell fairly highly, but I'd rather own them, and I'd hate to own just own. Anyone know if they will be getting another release?

So is there a reason why these films aren't getting the CRITERION treatment? Is it because of release issues or what?

Probably has to do with Sony having the rights. It's a shame these discs are that difficult to find because they are fairly average transfers on single layer media with no real extras to speak of. I'm not sure if we can be hopeful in R1 of decent releases. Very worthwhile films though - they deserve Criterion.

Thanks for the informative reply. I agree, it's a shame Satyajit Ray's classic trilogy (among his other brilliant works) continues to be ignored. Criterion treatment for his works would be a dream come true.

I would just buy this one and not worry about acquiring the others if it proves to be difficult. The trilogy parts are self contained and make sense independently of one another.

Here is an older thread with some speculation about the Apu Trilogy.

The Ray site at USCS has a lot of information, but no word on any upcoming re-releases: http://satyajitray.ucsc.edu/index.html
