Well it's not being kept together. At least not for the initial release. Eventually I think everyone will be happy, but not immediately because they will initially be seperate releases.

Huh. I wonder what the Weinsteins would do with Creepshow?

Yavin 05-28-07 08:33 AM

So essentially Grindhouse isn't being released in September, since they are splitting up the films and releasing them separately. Lame lame lame. I'll wait until the movie (in its entirety) is released.

Drexl 05-28-07 08:37 AM

It shouldn't take too long for someone to do a fan reconstruction.

Jason 05-28-07 08:43 AM

If they're splitting them up, why even release them at the same time? Put one out in July and the other in September.

rhcp1214 05-28-07 09:11 AM

You know, I'm thinking seperate releases wouldn't be all that bad. Think about it: A Planet Terror Two-Discer in typical RR fashion, loaded with extras, and maybe even an extended cut. Then, if QT gets of his coked up ass, we get a Death Proof extended cut two-discer. Sounds like a plan to me.

mzupeman2 05-28-07 10:17 AM

You really think you're going to get two discers the first time around?

Probably not, but I like to dream.

Dreamin' over here too!

Take it for what you will, I bought a Grindhouse action figure at Suncoast earlier and the guy working was extremely excited about Grindhouse in general. He told me that I could preorder the DVD if I wanted and that it would be a single disc of both movies. I told him that I had heard it would split up and he said, no, he had been anxious to figure that out himself and had just gotten word days ago that it would be one release. Is he right? He seemed pretty sure.

That's how they'll probably fuck us.

First release = single-disc theatrical cut.
Second release = seperate single-disc extended cuts.
Third release = Mega ultra special edition.

And I liked the movie so much, that I am okay with it.

MetalGator311 05-29-07 01:48 AM

It got booted so fast from the theaters here I literally didn't get a chance to see it as one film, and I'm a die hard RR/QT fan. If it had survived for over a month I could understand splitting them, but I think they will come to their senses and realize there are a lot of people who still want to see it as it was shown in theaters. If Chimel's prediction is accurate, I'll triple dip.

BuckNaked2k 05-29-07 06:58 AM

What about the issue of people not even recognizing the titles as sepatate releases?

People will remember "Grindhouse" from when it was released, but when they see the single title releases, they may not even realize what they are......could hurt sales.

This is one of the few times i'm OK w/ this sort of release strategy. It'd be a DAMN shame not to get the theatrical version of these films attached together.

Mr. Cinema 05-29-07 07:50 AM

Grindhouse has made its way to our local dollar theater. I'm gonna catch it this week. Since it's only earned $25 million so far, I'm sure the Weinsteins will do whatever is necessary to see a return. And that may mean the 3-release strategy that Matthew listed.

How appropriate, for the full grindhouse experience :)

Matthew Chmiel 05-29-07 11:26 AM

As I stated in the box office thread, I wish Vegas had a dollar theater. :(

However, I did get to see Grindhouse (my third -- and most likely last time theatrically) at the drive-in. Same levels of crappiness as a dollar theater, just that I got to sit in my truck bed instead of a seat.

tylergfoster 05-29-07 12:16 PM

I saw it at a drive in. Actually I saw it five times in theaters.

You think you're better than me? ;)

Ironically, the drive-in here in Vegas played it longer than most theaters did (about five weeks). By it's third week in, the flick either left most theaters here or was delegated to one or two showings a day (as it shared a screen with something else).

egotistical 05-29-07 04:07 PM

all i know is, i went to see it the night it came out...i was going to go back a couple of weeks later and see it again but they had already taken it off in knoxville. the ONE time i did get to see it was amazing, but i gotta have more of it.

SPiRAL 05-29-07 04:26 PM

Grindhouse is also showing at 2 local dollar theaters. I might catch it again this week with a buddy who hasn't seen it.

Matthew, what about the Tropicana Cinema ? I remeber seeing that dollar theater in L.V.

slop101 06-25-07 05:48 PM

"With tentpoles dominant, counterprogramming forays such as Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof have struggled. Released as part of Grindhouse Stateside, Death has turned in tepid numbers in Europe, with an international cume around $10 million from 10 markets. In France, it was off 53% in its third frame for a $3.5 million cume; Italian biz in its fourth weekend was mild as it lost more than 100 playdates and brought in just $65,000."
So much for the "they'll play better and more profitably on their own" theory...

JJE-187 06-25-07 06:23 PM

They should release 3 DVDs to start with
A single Planet Terror disc
A single Death Proof disc
A single Grindhouse disc with both films on 2 disc with everything as it was in theaters

I really want a DVD of the film I seen in theaters. I would even settle for a bare bones version of Grindhouse as long as it is as I seen it in theaters

Not a dollar theater anymore. It's been closed for the past two months, but was just re-opened as a first run.

Couldn't agree with you more.
