Growing Pains / Diff'rent Strokes future releases?

Has there been any word. GP had no more after season 1 and DS had no more after season 2. These were popular shows.

Still waiting for Diff'rent Strokes S3. I thought it was dead after I hadn't heard a peep after the initial season was released in 2004. The a year and a half later S2 came out, though I fear that may have been the last one. Very annoying. Just release the whole damn series in one shot.

I remember a article that said that Growing Pains won't release anymore seasons due to very poor sales

Looks like we're not seeing any S2's from that group either (Gimme A Break and Kate & Allie)

I thought I saw some new Kate and Ally DVDs at tvshowsondvd.com...like season 4 or something, but they were Canadian releases, still region 1.

I have the Canadian S2 of Gimme A Break, but didn't know about the Kate & Allie's. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like they've been abandoned in the U.S.

the DVD market is so overly flooded with TV on DVD even the old good shows (like the ones all mentioned above) wont get full series releases it looks like. I think it would be a smart idea (and cheaper for the companies than actually releasing DVD's) if they sold downladable complete seasons on the internet. It would be cheaper for us also not having to pay for packaging and the discs themselves.

The packaging and discs themselves are the least of the costs involved in putting out these shows.

When is the last time you read up on an abandoned show and the studio was saying, "We have everything else set up for the release, but if only damn cardboard would drop in price..."

And, frankly, I am not a fan of downloading off of Itunes for a dollar per episode, or however much it would be. Most shows would be more expensive that way and then you'd have to burn them to home made DVDs. I don't know about you, but I like a collection that looks nice, not DVD-Rs with marker writing on the top of them identifying the show.

Same here and also if they download TV shows, the quality could be terrible, to be honest, they will never abandon TV Shows on DVD since it is so popular now

i understand that. I didnt say the price would be a huge difference from actual DVDs, I said it would be cheaper, which it would be, so why are you arguing? Cardboard is not the only issue. It's tranferring the material onto the discs and the cost of the discs themselves.
Also, if you have an Xvid/Divx capable DVD player youd be able to fit an entire season of a sitcom on one DVD. Sure it wont look pretty sitting on your shelf, but it would save a shitload of space.

No, they won't. However, if you had the choice of downloading high quality shows off the net (i'm not talking about iTunes either), or not getting the show at all, which would you choose?

Gotta love the 'Poor sales' excuse. I hate when only season 1 of the show comes out on DVD then they decide that due to poor sales they won't release anymore seasons. Or even worse like for ex. King of the Hill's first six seasons are released bought em' all & now they won't release season 7 due to poor sales.
I think if your that high up in the # of releases of the show they should be forced to release the rest of the seasons. Hell NYPD: Blue we got seasons 1 & 2 in a short time period them wait like 2 years and then they release 3 & 4 in a short time period, now here we are waiting another year and no news for season 5.
Do these studios think a shows like Night court or Barney miller are going to sell like the simpsons sets.

I hate when a season doesn't sell well and they stop releasing them.

Because you pick the cheapest thing possible and claim it would be cheaper. The cost of the DVDs and the cases and artwork are pennies because they do so much in bulk.

Just to check out your theory that downloading TV shows would be cheaper, I went to Itunes to price some TV shows. House, for example, has season sets for sale online for 39.99. Gee, that's the exact same price as amazon.com.

My Name is Earl is actually more expensive on Itunes than it is from amazon.com.

I could probably go on...those are just two feature shows I saw on their main page. But I've looked before on Itunes. Your argument, based on real life examples, falls flat. Yes, there are a few TV shows you can find cheaper on Itunes...I saw Buffy as one example...but you know I can often find those cheaper sets from Itunes cheaper during sales that run throughout the year at amazon.com, deepdiscount, in stores, or elsewhere online, and still have the packaging and artwork you claim add so much to the final cost of the DVD set.

I agree...studios shouldn't expect Simpsons/Seinfeld/Friends numbers with each TV show. That's like expecting all music CDs to go platinum or something...I guess I just don't understand it.

As for things being cost prohibitive for WB, TV on DVD, they should just consider dumping those particular shows on WB's/AOL's In2tv. A bunch of the shows already on there were mentioned as NOT on the radar for WB during the recent HTF chat. At least we'd have them in some sort of form/quality.

I personally would like to see on DEMAND DVD releases of those shows that way they wouldn't have to press a lot of discs that would otherwise might not sell. Only press them as they are ordered.

On topic...

Gowing Pains is one of the shows they offer, and they have a selection of episodes from the various seasons, and they typically swap out/in new episodes every so often. If you keep an eye on things, you can probably get all of the episodes, but I'm not sure about that. The HIGH QUALITY downloadable offerings of the shows are pretty good quality as are the streamable LOW quality versions.

The Growing Pains Movie is also available:

I already stated I was NOT talking about iTunes so why did you go to iTunes and amazon to argue the point further ?
The studios that put out these DVDs have their own websites I am sure. You dont think they could make these shows available on their own websites for high quality downloads and charge a fraction of what it would cost for the DVD's?

Do I think they could? Of course. Do I think they will? Hell no. Why go to Itunes? Because it's the corporate giant right now, and there is no getting around that. I wish all music download stores worked like allofmp3.com too but we know that in this country corporate greed runs supreme and Itunes will continue to dominate and dictate the prices.

That's not to say smaller studios won't break away from the Itunes model and do what you suggest, but I would not count on the big studios doing that anytime soon.

Once again...

The WB already offers a lot of the shows they aren't continuing with on DVD or aren't even releasing yet on In2tv.

WB and AOL's In2tv is also FREE! They also have shows from other studios in the other section of AOL Video including specials and movies, most free, but new movies are $$.

yes but you cannot OWN the files...in2Tv files expire and WB you can only watch on your pc

You can always redownload a video and if it gets taken off the current list, it should make its way back on after the rotation. Plus, who doesn't have a TV-out or similar capability to watch your computer screen on your tv/projector?

Considering what they are offering is FREE, it's going to be better than nothing, and often better quality than torrents, and/or own vhs/dvr recordings... Especially for the shows that are NOT even available on DVD or are NOT shown in syndication anymore.

If the WB can't justify DVD releases, then at least we have something for those shows. I'd take DVD sets anyday, but that's not necessarily going to occur for some of these shows, especially if initial releases sell poorly or if music licensing is cost prohibitive.

I'd wish SONY/MGM/UNIVERSAL would also develop similar online offerings for their catalog/classic tv series, rather than just their newer shows. Ideally all these series would get DVD releases of all of their episodes, but that is not the case. That's all.

back on topic---->
