Tokyo Olympiad Criterion OOP

Just got the email from Criterion today, and they announced the title was going out of print.

Not really sure. This is what was stated in the email

Also, we wanted to let you know that our special edition of Kon Ichikawa’s astonishing documentary Tokyo Olympiad is now out of print. If you haven’t yet seen it, check with your favorite retailer—there may be a few copies left! You can read more about the film below in From the Collection.

I don't know for sure, but I would doubt it.

Maybe it will come back. The newsletter seems to emphasize it in a way that feels like they want to get rid of stock (Opening the newsletter with the OOP declaration and then featuring the DVD at the end), so they can re-issue it in a better form (if that's possible).

I've had this DVD for years. It's a great documentary showing the Olympics with a different eye.

That had a similar warning when "The Harder They Come" went OOP, and they haven't reissued that... (in fact, the OOP criterion has risen to a whooping $30 on amazon marketplace...)

Actually, Criterion has been pretty strightfoward when they take a title OOP for a future, more elaborate re-release. In this case, i believe that Criterion lost the rights and it is simply going OOP. No re-release.

Been meaning to get this, so I ordered it from Amazon tonight. Didn't look like DVDPlanet, DVDEmpire, or Deep Discount had any in stock.

cheers,

Ordered one as well. Meant to get this one awhile back and even on laserdisc, but always held off. The site said only 2 left when I ordered, but who knows if that is accurate. They may already have been out of them.

I ordered one from DVDPlanet within 30 minutes of Criterion sending the newsletter announcing the OOP. It said In Stock at that time. I'm going to be unhappy if I don't get a copy (my order status currently says In Process, so maybe...).

My order shipped today from Amazon. I thought for sure I had ordered too late. It showed out of stock right after I ordered. Thanks to the OP for the heads up.

Finally got this today. I was starting to worry it got lost. Again thanks to the OP. I wanted this one for a long time (since laserdisc) and would have kicked myself for missing it.

Get it if you can. It will not be a re-released apparently.

A rep from Criterion responded to an email inquiry with this reply:

"Unfortunately this title is going out of print for good. Thanks for your
email!

Sincerely,

Tamara"

Got mine from CriterionDVD.com on Friday. I noticed that they still have it in stock, but now the price has doubled.
