Hey

Just a quick note to let you know that a two-disc special edition of Letters From Iwo Jima has been announced for the 22nd May. A five-disc collection containing both films will also be available. Full details below:

Warner Home Video has today officially announced Letters From Iwo Jima which stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, and Ryo Kase. The two-disc special edition will be available to own from the 22nd May, and should retail at around $34.99. The film will be presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with a Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track. English subtitles will be provided. Extras will include a Red Sun, Black Sand: Making of Letters from Iwo Jima documentary, a Faces of Combat: The Cast of Letters from Iwo Wima documentary, a still photo montage, the November 2006 World Premiere at Budo-kan in Tokyo, and a November 2006 press conference. HD DVD and Blu-ray releases will be available for $39.99 and $34.95 respectively. The extra material will be identical.
Also available from the 22nd May will be a five-disc Commemorative Collector's Edition which includes Letters From Iwo Jima, along with Flags of our Fathers, and the compelling bonus disc Heroes Of Iwo Jima. This includes a deeply moving A&E documentary (narrated by Gene Hackman), and the Oscar Nominated 1945 short film To the Shores of Iwo Jima. Retail will be $49.96

We all suspected there would be a Flags/Letters combo set in the future -- glad to hear its coming out the same day as the Flags and Letters respective 2-disc sets, and also with a bonus 5th disc.

I am ecstastic these are coming out! Looking forward to picking up the 5-disc edition. If the 5 disc edition is retailing for about 50 bucks, I suspect that Best Buy and Circuit City will probably have it around 37-39 bucks.

Well, shucks. That Flags/Letters set looks mighty tempting. Not badly priced either given that the Letters and Flags SEs have a combined SRP of $70.

This five disc set could be one of the nicest dvd releases of the year. I'm glad I held off on purchasing Flags of our Fathers, as I anticipated a nicer release, but this sounds awesome!

Wow, I didn't expect these to get packaged together since they are distributed by different studios. However, Warner has worked out deals in the past (Wolfgang Peterson Collection, Oliver Stone Collection), so I guess it shouldn't be too surprising.

Egad. I was looking to save up a lot of dough for the Leones in June. But that 5-Disc'er looks like it's gonna take a chunk out of the savings!

Nice. And with a SRP of $34.99, probably could find it for $25 I would guess...

I'm in for the 5-discer. The picture of the box isn't exactly breathtaking though, hopefully it looks better in person. Either way... should be one hell of a set.

Looks like I'm the only one who dislikes the set cover. I hope they will be in amaray cases so it can be discarded.

No 5-disc for me, just getting Iwo Jima, didn't think Flags was very good.

Instead they do it to the HD supporters. Looks like no 5 disc set for them.

It's not a horrible cover... they just took the lazy way out. There's always the chance it could change between now and release day.

I'm in the the 5-disc set

And that's exactly what I've been waiting for. I held off on Flags Of Our Fathers knowing there would be a combo (and it was just an awful DVD). People kept saying it wouldn't happen because of the studio issue, but I knew they'd figure something out. It's too damn obvious to not combine them into a single release.

I'll definitely be grabbing the 5 disc somewhere.

Warner doesn't typically create completely independant artwork for their multi-film sets. This one just continues in their blended-montage style; kind of surprised the individual covers aren't on the box spine in miniature, as well.
