Almost Famous: Bootleg Cut

I've kept my eyes on most of the on-line stores (Amazon, yahoo shopping, ebay, etc) for quite a while now and I've never seen this DVD dip below $35. Since I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to get into a bidding war on ebay, I've kept this on my "want" list.

I'm wondering if anyone has heard any rumblings of a re-release of this or even a single disk bare bones version of the 162 minute (the "bootleg") cut. Shit, I'd be happy just being able to see it, let alone buying it. I love the "regular" cut but I've held off buying it in hopes of a re-release of both versions.

I even asked a few blockbusters & mom & pop shops if they have it for rent. Two of the BB stores say they had it when it first came out but once it went OOP, they were literally stolen off the shelves.

So, what gives? Will I ever get a chance to see/own this cut or what? Or should I sack up and spend the $40-$50+ to get a used copy from Amazon/Ebay?

well depending on how much you really want to see that cut...I'd say go for it...I wouldn't expect a new version anytime soon...but the bootleg cut is better if you'd ask me, it goes deeper in the movie..

Guess I was lucky to find one mispriced at Blockbuster about a year ago, got it for 13.99$ CDN..

I had held off on this DVD for the exact same reasons - I'm a cheap SOB. I didn't want to pay Ebay prices so I waited and waited. I came across it twice at used stores. Both times it didn't have the Stillwater CD.

I finally found it intact at Ameoba in Hollywood about a month ago. It was 25 bucks so I scooped it up. I'm glad I did now. The Untitled Cut is really good and I LOVE the CD.

If you're a fan of Almost Famous, you should definitely get the Bootleg Cut, it improves on the original in every way.

I've kept an eye out for this as well but haven't seen it for under $80-$90! If I found one for $35 I'd probably take it. But at this point I'm willing to wait for a HD release. I figure by the time I can afford either/both BD & HD dvd this title will be available.

$35 isn't too bad. I got mine as a Christmas present from my girlfriend a few years back, before it went OOP(didn't even know at the time that it was a limited edition). And I think she paid about $30 for it then.

Just look at it as you would a Criterion. Maybe that would help you justify the price to yourself.

Since this is now OOP, I would suggest picking it up for $35 used. It is worth it.

I would also recommend keeping your eyes open at used dvd stores. Hopefully you have one near you that you can visit often. That's how I got my copy for super-cheap (with the CD still inside, luckily).

Strong agreement. I paid about $30 for it when it first came out and never regretted it. Better version of a great film.

Yeah, this is a great set, I would suggest you get it while you can if it is a movie you like.

It used to run 14.99 CAD at amazon.ca - I got it there in 2004 with the Canadian release of Ginger Snaps and a Scarface boxset. My entire order was under $50 US - I guess that Almost Famous was a real steal when you look at current prices.

There is a sealed copy on half.com for $28. The rest of the prices make it out to seem it is out of print. Is it?

I have to agree with the others. The Bootleg Cut is amazing, worth every penny. One of my favorite movies of all time.

It is Out of Print.

If you can pick it up for $28, buy it!!

If you end up not liking it, you can always sell it for more money than you paid.

Always check Amazon.com as well. Sometimes they get out of print items in for a limited time. I've seen some OOP Criterions show up last year.

I got one via instore pickup from a misprice on borders website a year and a half ago for under $10. I never had time to watch or open it and when I saw they were going for a lot on ebay; I sold mine for around $50. didn't think the movie version was worth watching for $50 and I could get about 10 movies from columbia House for that price.

Dammit, that's the cheapest I've ever seen it but it's already been sold. I'll put a lot of money of the fact that someone from this board saw this thread and went to buy it. Damn you, mystery buyer!

Oh well. I'll keep my eyes open. I have a local used CD/DVD place that I've asked to call me should a copy of this show up. We'll see how that pans out.

jpoppe...looks like that $28 DVD listing is a mistake, or an old listing that won't go away. That seller hasn't any feedback for 2 years. And judging by the feedback, you wouldn't want to buy from him anyway.

For some reason I was thinking that this was one of those directors cut with very little added so I never picked it up. Now I read some reviews of it and realized just how wrong that opinion was. doh!

Managed to get the for free 2 weeks ago at a local used place (they have one of those stamp cards, that when you fill it you get a free DVD).

Fantastic set.
