In a word...Yes!
In more than a word...i have off tomorrow and was trying to pick something out for tonight, so i opened my DVD Profiler and went through my 700+ and was like...i want to watch this and then it was that. my moods change so drastically (thanks Bi-Polar Disorder) that i can't focus on picking one movie.

and i have all these unwatched blind buys that i want to watch but don't seem in the mood for. like i really want to watch "Half Nelson" , "Stranger Than Fiction" , "Tenacious D" , etc...but i don't feel the mood to pop those in just yet. so annoying!

lately, i have been watching in genre order (by picking them out ahead of time and setting them up so as to ease into each movie).
1st: Comedy
2nd: Action or Drama, usually Action
3rd: Horror ( i always like to end a late night with a horror title)

i've been pretty good with the 1st and 3rd, but it is that 2nd middle and what i think crucial enjoyable movie that i struggle with. ugh! sometimes it really drives me batty.

tonight i think i have my line-up though...
1st: "Private School"
2nd: "Tigerland"
3rd: "King of New York"
I have "Night of the Comet" in already from another night that i fell asleep during so i got the horror covered.

i just hope i can stick to it and that is that.

This happens constantly to me. About once or twice a week i usually bring a dvd with to work to watch during my lunch break on my portable dvd player. Unfortunately, i don't look for a movie until 10 minutes before i leave and the whole time i'm looking i keep checking my watch and thinking "hurry up you have 3 minutes to get out the door." It can be such a pain in the ass because i don't want to watch something i haven't seen yet because i wouldn't be able to finish it on my break, but i also don't want to watch something i've seen a dozen times.

At home it can be even worse with my wife. Usually we just give up and watch either TV on DVD or something on our DVR.

Something tells me that with a handle like starman9000 that doesn't leave a lot of options!

My problem is that every time I have a DVD I want to watch in my hands and start to turn away from my collection, something better catches my eye. Then by the time I make my final, final decision I don't have enough time to watch it and have to look for something shorter.

My other problem is I have a ton of foreign and silent films that I don't watch on week nights because even when I'm in the mood, I'm too tired to focus on subtitles.

Those of you who have wives or girlfriends now know what they mean when they say "I have nothing to wear"!

Same here... except it's hard for me to decide which unwatched DVD to watch.

But, I guess one could have worse problems.

Yes. My collection is not nearly as big as some of yours, but I feel that it is larger than average. I like to think that there is a pretty big variety. When I try to pick out a movie to watch when I'm by myself, I end up spending a half hour trying to decide, and often times, I don't end up watching anything. I think the large selection hurts things to a certain extent, because I feel obligated to choose the "perfect movie" for any given time. However, when a movie comes in the mail from blockbuster, there is a sense of urgency to watch that one and send it back asap.

When my girlfriend and I want to watch a movie, we often do the pass the 5 dvd pile between eachother thing, as some of you have mentioned.

The sad fact is, I spend WAY MORE time on this site then I do watching movies...

Usually no, actually. 600+ and when I can't find something to watch, it's usually only due to the fact that I'd like to see something new. I've just about caught up on my unwatched pile and the rest is a mood thing. But once my mind is wrapped around something new, it just doesn't let go sometimes. That's when I head out the door .. if plausible. Or, I'll start reviewing my collection or someone elses online and see if something refreshes.

If nothing works, I'll just end up here or another forum and kill some time.

yep. either nothing jumps out at me to watch right now, or I can't commit the time (I don't like watching half a movie), or I just can't decide.
Too much choice can sometimes be a bad thing.
"Who woulda thunk it? Here we are, in the early years of the twenty-first century, being driven bonkers by the staggering array of consumer goods from which we must choose. Choosing something as (seemingly) simple as shampoo can force us to wade through dozens, even hundreds, of brands. We are, the author suggests, overwhelmed by choice, and that's not such a good thing. Schwartz tells us that constantly being asked to make choices, even about the simplest things, forces us to "invest time, energy, and no small amount of self-doubt, and dread." There comes a point, he contends, at which choice becomes debilitating rather than liberating. Did I make the right choice? Can I ever make the right choice?"

Or like visitor Q I'll end up browsing the same websites or maybe playing a stupid little 'pick up and go' PC game.
The 5th dvd I have, according to DVDPro, is unwatched. It was bought 7/19/01. At least it wasn't a blind buy. The first unwatched blindbuy is number 17 bought 10/11/01. Sad.

I have a hard time as well. My main problem is I am forcing my way through my unwatched stack and it includes alot of titles that you need to be in the "mood" to watch - drama and war stuff. I think when I get through the backlog everything will be much better because I can go back and rewatch stuff I want to see right then. No pressure to knock out the blind buys and backlog.

One of the disc changers I have hooked up is loaded with tv show discs. Often when I'm tired or can't decided on something I just watch my personal "TV Land". I've often thought about what to watch tonight in the middle of the day or day before and loaded some discs in the player. Later, when ready to watch a movie I'll just watch something that's already in the player.

Same here! I have less than 150 DVDs but picking a film to watch from beginning to an end is difficult.

I'm going to have to try the five disc method with my wife. We just 626 this weekend, and that just pushed the percentage of unwatched even higher (and it's already probably over 50%)

I don't know when I'm going to watch all my horror stuff. I've got all the Romero dead, the Return/Dead trilogy and all four Japanese Ring movies plus the two US to get thru. And she'll have nothing to do with any of them.

I get this problem often and normally end up playing videogames instead since my choices are a lot more limited

What happens to me is that i watch my new dvds i get every tuesday way to fast and by the time the weekend comes i have nothing to watch sometimes. back when i started collecting dvds i used to watch my tv on dvd sets over & over again, now when i watch a set i finish it and don't usually re-watch it for a long time.
I can finish a tv on dvd set in 2-7 days no problem. 2-3 days if its a half hour show (21-25min), 5-7 days if its a hour show (41-51min).

I don't have a problem with being in the mood for something. Out of my 800 or so dvds, I'm up for watching any 90% of it at a given time. The problem is that I have such a wide selection of stuff I'd like to watch, it's hard to choose just one thing.

My boyfriend and I definitely have this same problem. We have 900+ discs and sometimes we spend a whole night staring at the DVD instead of watching one. It's funny though, because we'll have a blind buy sitting in the collection for forever, and then months and months later, we finally watch it, love it and wonder why it took us so long to watch!
