in true typical Paramount fashion, they drop the film's NC-17 rating, release it 'unrated' and then get the controversy

It makes you wonder if anyone at Paramount actually WATCHED the movie before releasing it.

historically, they (Paramount) hasn't been too kind to this release. Look how long it took them to release this to DVD.

Thank God I have it then. I love this movie.

Let's be thankful they didn't watch it, if that was the case. At least now we have the complete uncut version. From what I've read, every other DVD release of this film available elsewhere in the world is somewhat edited. Considering Paramount US is usually so puritanical about this kind of thing, their release of this completely uncut version really must have slipped by them somehow. Nope, we'll never see hockey-mask Jason's fake gory killings in Ft13th and its sequels, but here they let us have full on realistic violence, full on sex/nudity, and even controversial child nudity. Duh!

That's due to the mentioned scenes of violence and sex, where varying worldwide censorboards pretty much cut what they found objectionable.

In the out of print book 'Bertolucci's 1900: A Narrative and Historical Analysis' by author Robert Burgoyne it is noted that Bertolucci actual prefers his recutting and fine tuning for the American version.

I'm almost tempted to buy it given this set of circumstances.

I'm not a Bertolucci fan by any stretch with the slight exception of two films which I find somewhat compelling (The Conformist, Before the Revolution). IMO, "Novecento" is one of his all-time worst containing all the bad traits of his other films plus a few new ones. And, yes, I've seen it several times, including the latest uncut DVD (just returned Disc 2 to Netflix on Tuesday), and it's as big a mess as it always was.

And yet... I'm tempted to pick it up. But, no. I'll leave the DVD I might otherwise purchase on the shelf for someone who actually appreciates the film. If I never see "Novecento" again, it will be no great loss for me.

I think that I was just able to snag the last in-stock copy at DVDEmpire. I'll keep my fingers crossed until I get a shipping notice from them. I like Bertolucci and have a few of his titles already (The Conformist, Last Tango, La Commare Seca).

This is odd. AFAIK the VHS edition used the same cut and it stayed in print for at least a few years. And the 35mm version is still in circulation (or was as of a couple of weeks ago, when it played here over two nights). It's a slim possibility but I'm wondering if there might be something else at work here.

No, the Paramount VHS release was definitely not the same version. That VHS version was the severely cut R-rated edit and ran 255 minutes over two tapes. This DVD runs the full 315 minutes and, if my memory is correct, it includes a few moments (such as the three-way hand-job moment mentioned in the above link) that were missing from some of the NC-17 prints (at least the ones I've seen).

I got my copy at wal-mart.....WAL-MART who carries censored cd's, because of a few words like fuck and shit and bitch.

Well sir, I think you should march right back to Wal-Mart and tell them how dare they carry such "filth" in a family establishment. I mean, my child could theoretically buy the dvd there and be exposed to...my god...SEX...NUDITY...
and SUBTITLES...oh, for the love of "Showgirls" not subtitles!!! Luckily I have no children so this nightmare scenario can be safely filed away next to my "For the Love of Seka" dvd.

I bought my copy at Wal-Mart too. I remember a few year ago when they wouldn't carry any "Unrated" DVDs, but they decide to carry this? Weird.
