to me, the key to a major site folding in affiliate links is to A. be subtle about it and B. try to deliver it seamlessly with the content.
tvsodvd tends to scream "LINKS HERE" and also make them separate entries rather than part of news stories. nothing wrong with that i guess. i just choose to avoid that site now because of it.
dvdtalk has it nailed, imo.
love it here.

I feel that if they're going to put the sales in the news section, they should include all good deals, whether from Amazon, Deep Discount, or Best Buy. If they don't want to do that because Amazon's paying them/they're using affiliate links, the sales should be separated out into their own section. I wouldn't mind supporting the site by using affiliate links, as long as they're up front about what they're doing.

First off Gord (as an aside, from a fellow Gord, does it seem like everyone in our country has that name) congrats on the TV Guide deal. I hope you got so much bling you'll be snorting coke off a hooker's ass for decades to come
Regarding what we'd like to see added to the site I have to echo the sentiments of others that a R2-6 addition would be superb however I understand the extra workload that would entail.
As a middle of the road position would you consider adding content for non-R1 titles that aren't for sale in North America (Ally McBeal season boxsets springs to mind)?
TIA and congrats again!

Hey guys, sorry to revive an old thread, but I felt the need to post here.
There have always been two arguments with the "Amazon Deals" news items. 1) It's not news because it doesn't announce a new title, and 2) It is news because it's letting people know they can pick up a title for a good price. I can honestly say that we get about 50 messages thanking us for posting an Amazon sale for every 1 email we get complaining about the Amazon news. Should I ignore those complaints? No way!
Amazon sales were always posted as news items because that was the only way to get them up on the site for people to read, but that's changing. The other day Dave posted the last of the Amazon sales posts (which actually generated a LOT of email asking us to continue them), but we'll still keep people informed as to what's going on sale. I hope to launch the "Amazon Sales Page" on Monday, which will list all the TV-DVD titles Amazon has on sale, the regular price, current price, amount being saved, and the percentage off the regular price. It will be constantly updated, and includes tons of different ways to sort and restrict data. It'll be there for those that want the sales info, and not there for people that don't care about it. We'll even have an RSS feed for people that want to monitor the deals that way. Most importantly, we won't be posting sales information as news items any more.
I should note that Amazon sales never, ever took away from "real" DVD news; they were always news items posted in addition to what was being announced, or stuff we dug up. The Amazon posts were usually less than 10% of the total news items for the month, though could have been a little bit more during the months that Amazon was heavily promoting TV-on-DVD.
I just wanted to let you know that the deals won't be posted as news items anymore. Thanks to everyone who offered their criticism in the thread, and did it in a constructive manner, and thanks to those that said they enjoyed reading about the deals at Amazon - I think you'll enjoy the new page a lot more. Hopefully those that said they were ditching the site because of the Amazon ads will find their way back.

Just to go on record here I like the Amazon links. It has made me see deals that I probably wouldn't be aware of if I didn't see them on your website. I hope they are continued in some form in the future.

Sorry dvd-4-life, no word on the Herculoids or the 67 Fantastic Four yet.
Phantom, we're putting up the link tomorrow, but I'll give you an early preview: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/sales.cfm
I'll probably be playing around with it today, so there's a chance you'll get an error message or seeing some formatting be off a bit.
