To those of you who continue to buy a lot dvds. I'm curious....why do you BUY instead renting from NetFlix? I am running out of space to store my 800 DVD collection so I need to start renting instead of buying :/

Don't forget to post lots of pics when your setup is completed. |

September of 1999. I go from working as a security guard for Coca Cola, making $6.25 an hour with no real raise in sight, to working in a factory where I hired in at $12.25 an hour and would max out my pay to $18 an hour after a year and a half. To celebrate, I bought my first DVD Player.
August of 2004. The factory job fell through after my knee gave out on me and I found I couldn't stand for 10 hours a night 6 nights a week. Between odd jobs and such, my collection grows to about 250 titles. People come over and say "damn, you have a lot of movies." September of 2004. I have the opportunity to open my own business. I need to choose a business that (a) has a product that is currently on a growth surge, (b) I know a good deal about, and (c) I like to do. MOVIES! I open my store, The Movie Exchange, dealing in new and used DVD's. Think of me as a Game Stop / EB that focuses purely on DVDs. Present day. It's like taking a crack addict and telling him to sell crack. It took 5 years to build a collection of about 250 titles. Today, according to DVDSpot, my collection stands at 1,247 titles owned, not including a few home made copies of things we'll never see legally released (Adam West Batman series, season sets of Mystery Science Theater 3000) and a few new titles that I haven't entered in yet. In 2005 and 2006, I added on the average more than 1 DVD a day to my collection. I spent $7170.33 last year on my addiction. Yeah, I think I need help. The best I can say is that at least I don't freak out over used material, because it would have cost a hell of a lot more buying everything new. |
Hope nobody minds me bumping this few month old thread, but I wanted to contribute.
I've worked at Blockbuster Video most of my adult life (which is pretty sad I guess but it's a job. I am 22, 23 in July). When I started working there, my family rarely rented videos (only liked smaller mom & pop places which Blockbuster and Hollywood put out of business...), and they never really bought. We had the occasional VHS, usually odd ones at that, but not a lot of movies. My dad got a DVD player, I'm guessing it must have been 2000 or 01. At least a year before I graduated high school in 2002. So I had the means to watch the movies right off. My first DVD I ever bought was Zoolander. I had some weird class/job thing which had few hours (since it was a class), so my first check was about $25, and since I knew nothing of the value of DVD's, I spent nearly all of it on that single movie. I mainly bought the movie because a girl I liked really liked it. That didn't work out but I still like the movie. Second movie was probably Lord of the Rings: Fellowship Theatrical Cut. Also overpayed on it, I'm sure. After that, it was a variety of movies, used and new, from Blockbuster. I had no idea what movies were worth and thus spent a good $400 my first Christmas working there (since I got an extra 10% off, making it 30%, or closer to Wal-Mart and Best Buy everyday prices). I know I picked up Braveheart and the two Family Guy volumes at that time, but not sure what else. Okay, so skipping ahead to last fall, I got a job as a Shift Leader at Gamestop and was making more money. I dropped a huge amount of money on tv on dvd and regular dvds, pretty much maxing out my credit card (about $1000). I lost that job, am unfortunately back at Blockbuster (almost finished AA finally though after seeing how I'm going nowhere), and now have about $400 in bills each month (bought a new car just before losing my job). So that's made it sort of hard to keep up this, er, habit. I've got 311 movies according to Movie Collector (although about 90 of those are the g/f... but she had like 10 when we met two years ago). I've gotten a lot better at not picking up random dvd's "just because it's cheap", but some things are reallllly hard to pass up. Like the FLCL boxset at $32. Like the Matrix HD-DVD set for $20 from CC, although I have no player. Double dipping Akira for the OOP tin. I just recently got a great new credit card with a $2000 limit and no APR on purchases or balance transfers for a year, so the old card can finally stop making my $50 payments $20 after APR fees. But I am really tempted to fill this new card up with the dvdtalk sale right now... have wanted Sports Night and Upright Citizens Brigade for who knows how long, and there are some decently priced criterions there which would be great with 20% off. |
I semi-impulsively bought when I first got into DVDs, maybe from 1998-2000 or so.
I've slowed down a lot since then, and just buy stuff I've seen and know I'll want to watch repeatedly. But to be fair, I was never all that bad given I've been buying since 1998 and only have a bit over 250. |
I am a DVD addict. I often jokingly respond to derision by saying, "it's either DVDs or crack."
I'd never do drugs, but it is true to an extent. I have a buying/collecting compulsion since childhood, and it seems to have settled into DVDs. I may seek help someday, as I seriously have more DVDs than I'll ever have time to fully watch. But at least I am tending towards my exclusive bonus discs now, which are often free or close to free after I ebay, sell, or re-gift the main title. |
My addiction has slowed and my patience has increased so now I am a "bargain bin hunter"
|
My buying has slowed dramatically as my collection becomes well-rounded to the point of my own satisfaction.
I can honestly say, there are no DVDs in print that I want and do not have. My wishlist in Aficionado has fewer than 10 titles, some announced, others only hoped for. |
Im still addicted but now I wait on most new releases til they reach the $10 range.
|
Just a little bit addicted -- I think I own around 120 DVDs and have rule that my DVDSpot list cannot grow to over 50 titles. I purged my collection down to 10 DVDs less than a year ago and have gone on a bit of a buying spree to re-collect everything I used to have. Once I get my wishlist close to caught up, I will be at the point of only buying new release titles and re-releases.
Like someone mentioned earlier, I too have to admit a lot of the addiction comes from the thrill of a good deal (stacking coupons, pricing glitches, can't-miss bargains, etc.) I also try to trade things I no longer want for items on my wishlist to save some cash. |
i have a dvd, cd, videogame and shoe/clothes addiction. long story short with all my money spent on everything mentioned ive been drug free for 3 years now.
|
I do a decent job of watching the movies I buy, but I have a bad problem of buying concerts and music video collections then never watching them
|
I know I'm addicted.
Even though I don't blind buy many new releases anymore, I will once the price gets down to around the $7-$8 range, but Netflix has helped me cut down on blind buying. I also told myself awhile back I wouldn't buy anymore TV seasons until I fill all the holes in my collection, but that hasn't worked as well as I hoped. I also picked up a region free DVD player awhile back which opened up a whole other can of worms. I think with all the price drops/sales going on, my spending amount hasn't changed much, but the number of DVDs I get are increasing. I am glad that DVDs are pretty much the only thing I collect now. I used to be big into comics, but it was taking up too much space. DVDs are more manageable. |
I'm addicted, but at least it's not crack! No, seriously, my budget has DVDs included in it but I usually keep my spending low by buying previously viewed, not buying new releases, etc.
|
I've curbed my DVD addiction quite alot over the past years. In the past, I would always buy at least one to several DVD's each release period. Now, I can go several months without buying a disc.
The one addiction I still have, is checking all the DVD websites several times a day. The first thing I do every morning before I go to work is onto the DVD Talk website. During the day, I will check the talk forums keeping up on all the topics. At the end of the day, the last website I'm at is DVD Talk. |
From about 1999-2003 I was at my buying peak. I've probably only purchased about 20 in the last two years. My collection stands at about 400.
|
I've toned down my dvd spending a bit in the last 2 years. I actually buy Used instead of renting now. Most of the titles I buy are between $4.99-$7.99. If I like the movie enough I'll keep it, or either trade it back or sell it to a friend. Since I got my 1st dvd player in 1999, dvds have been a strong hobby of mine.
|
Nothing like going into High Def to curb your spending. Not only are the discs way too expensive, you're limited to the movies you can get.
|
I am 22 and when I first got my licence and job, I used to take all my money and usually go to best buy or somewhere on the weekend and blow it all. I would buy stuff just to buy stuff. Now with College, and me moving out when i am done with school, I find my self becoming more cheap. I still buy the occasional DVD or HD-DVD. But i dont blind buy anymore and really just use Netflix. I tend to spend my money on going out, clothes, restraunts, books etc.
Even though I slowed down and dont spend like I used to the past few months have been expensive on movies Matrix trilogy HD-DVD 40 year old virgin hd-dvd Mullholland dr. Hd-dvd Planet earth hd-dvd scrubs season 5 bones season 1 (best buy deal) Fantastic Four extended edition Invasion of Astro-Monster Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster |

And I'm being torn apart - I'm trying to get all the Limited Editions I want while they're still out there, I have a wishlist which contains some older films I want, I want some new releases and fancy packaged re-releases also. When I started, my wishlist had about 200 titles. Now I have about 400 DVDs, but my wishlist did not only NOT become smaller, it's 450 titles! No matter how many I buy, I still add more to the wishlist. I'd like to purchase more, but I can't spend all my money on DVDs... I'm dreaming about times when the whole wishlist is on my shelf and I'm just browsing internet for some new releases weekly. |
I used to be really bad, but have stopped myself. Really to me now, it's a waste of money - i watch the movies once or twice, and then they all end up on the movie network (on demand services as well)
Throw in the fact i've got sattelite (dishnet), Rogers Cable (with all the movie networks) and a blockbuster/rogers video within walking distance there's very little need for me to go out and buy movies. The only time i buy now is if it's Disney, TV on DVD or something too good to pass up on (i picked up eddie murphy raw a month ago for 7.99 cdn) |
i enjoy buying DVDs but only if i know i'm getting a really good deal on the dvd. nearly everything in my collection was bought during a sale. if i want something, i'll usually put it on a list and check weekly sales until 1.) it comes up in a weekly sale, or 2.) DDD's 20% off sale rolls around
