why can't they they do a 3-4 disc version of just ANH with related extras- throw in the holiday special (w commentary!), deleted scenes (raw and newly finished), both versions (multiple commentaries on each) - license parodies, doc on influence of pop culture in the late 70's, etc.

I would rather have a one big something focusing on episode 4 then a saga spanning set.

You mean the successful pattern demonstrated by the Superman Movies? You know, that's a damn fine thought. That's really pretty sharp. They'll never do it. Going back to the comment released about how poorly recent DVD sales have been they would claim that individual movie sales are not the way to go. That and the pattern they've set with Star Wars and Indy Jones. The movies on their own disc with one disc of features and all in a box.

Man I'd love a roaming commentary. Just sit them down and let them roll. I think Ben Burtt had some of the strongest commentary with Murren and Lucas leaving a trail for Fisher. Kershner had his moments in Empire's commentary. But I want the cast to sit in a room and have some fun! The Hellboy track was a blast and a half. I have a feeling that Fisher and Hammil alone would make a great track. But get the principles in there.

They might not do that though. I don't know. Obviously I cannot say.

I have to say you really have inflamed my imagination with that idea Tolhurst.

That doesn't make it a bad idea though.

I agree. I'd love to see one major multi-disc set just for A New Hope this year.

Then they can give 30th Anniversary Editions for ESB and ROTJ in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

They could also do 10th Anniversary Editions in 2009, 2012, and 2015 for the prequels.

By releasing them individually we stand a better chance at getting more comprehensive editions compared to one single mega boxset.

This is a bit off topic, but has anyone heard anymore about the 3D version of "A New Hope"??

Kal-El 03-19-07 01:48 PM

I believe they're 3d-fying Phantom Menace first.

So Star Wars in 3-D is still moving forward? Any word on when the first of them will be released?

I like this idea too. Though I'd like the rest of the movies each done one per year the following years. This is probably what they should have done last year IMHO.

I'd like to see A Phantom Menace on DVD again with being digitally remastered. I know for its time it was close to reference quality but for todays standards, some of this DVD looks to be dreadfully soft and there's too much noticable edge enhancement. A new DVD transfer of this would be nice.

4 DVDs per movie loaded with extra's should be the minimum. But knowing Lucas he'll release a half ass set again

I'd argue that he knows the dvd buyer very well considering how many times people have repurchased the sets.

I beg to differ, did you not see on the The Digital Bits where the rumor is that the sales of last fall's shovelware release were so low, that the plans for the big 30th Anniversary set were in trouble?

I still see those sets on store shelves to this day, and I believe that if it been a proper release of the original versions only (without the SE's forced on them), and of course proper transfers, a truly "limited" release would not still be sitting on the shelves 8 months later.

Living Dead 05-21-07 12:28 AM

Milo, Lucas may have pissed you off with the last release (and me, for that matter) but he has used every possible opportunity to re-release his movies over and over again. I doubt poor sales of the last release will prevent him from continuing to flood the market for years to come. Even if the Bits rumor mill is correct and it doesn't happen to fall on the 30th anniversary, there will eventually be some ridiculously massive all encompassing set.

It's almost certainly true when you say that they would have sold better if they had been presented in a way the fans wanted, but I would say that Lucas knows the DVD buyers well enough to know that we will open our wallets for a box set no matter how much crap he tries to feed us in the meantime. All we have to do is wait and hope the next one will preserve the O-OT properly. Hell, I don't even need a re-master, just anamorphic would do.

Pretty please, Lucas?
