Didn't Lucas originally want to wait to release the original trilogy on DVD until all the movies were done, so they could all be released together? That's what I remember him saying back in the day.

I would be in for Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, original versions, in HD. That's it for me.

LEGO tells all!

I cannot find the article, press release, or snickering that went on in the "blogosphere" but here is my recolection...

LEGO put out a press release about their 2007 lines. They said that the 2007 Star Wars LEGO block toys would have a special logo commemorating the 30th aniversary. And that they would be out in time to maximise consumer response to the... Wait for it... 30th aniversary Dee... Vee... Dees.

Yeah. I have no Star Wars DVDs (or LEGO block toys for that matter) and view the 30th as a fine time to indulge. Josh-Da-Man? Not a bad little collection you've dreamed up!

And Jason? HI-LARIOUS! I haven't seen that gag before. I dont' get out much.

Gee thanks guys. I don't think I could've lasted another day without a new 'Luca$ is the Devil!' thread.

I would imagine he would release them in standard DVD first, then HD a year or so later. He'll want to milk both crowds.

If there are more changes, I'll buy the thing. I'll hold on to my other release box of the 4-6 trilogy. It's Star Wars, some of my favorite films of all time. The changes didn't really urk me all that much. I'm in the minority. I grew up watching the originals as well, so what can I say? I've said this in a bajillion other Star Wars threads but I don't care. If there's changes, I'll be buying. If it's only the films we already have on DVD, I won't buy the set, just to have the set. And perhaps for this box set, they'll finally give all the fans anamorphic transfers of the original trilogy. As been said before, some sort of Lucas purchases are common to have every year. It's like a subscription service. This is absolutely true, and if we don't see more Star Wars in the fall, we'll most likely see perhaps some other sort of Indiana Jones compilation.

I just found this article on comingsoon.net saying that Lucas IS planning a 30th anniversary release.

"Looking ahead, Verrecchia said he expected Star Wars to continue to be a strong performer with Lucas planning a video release for this year's 30th anniversary, a Star Wars animated TV show next year and a live-action Star Wars TV show in 2009."

And the Star Wars subscription continues...

Just saw that, too. Much like that of Duh Vuh Duh, my guess is, the big announcement will come during Celebration IV in May, and the release will be set in September. I doubt there will be any theatrical viewings.

I know this has nothing to do with nothing, but I'm just curious about two things:

1) How come Lucas failed to direct the first two sequels?

2) How come Lucas dropped the ball after Return of the Jedi, and waited until 2001 to continue his saga with Phantom Menace?

digitalfreaknyc 02-11-07 09:12 PM

1) I don't think he wanted to be bothered...and was too burnt out to do Empire. He did a LOT of 2nd unit stuff on Jedi and was there almost every day. It's pretty much like he directed it. I'm here he had his hand so far up Richard's ass that he felt like Frank Oz.

2) I wouldn't say he "dropped the ball." he just didn't want to deal with it. It's his decision.

J-Dubya 02-11-07 09:18 PM

only if they include Triumph's Star Wars interviews!

Phantom Menace came out in 1999, actually.

I believe the official line is that he wanted to wait until special effects technology had caught up with his ambitions for the series.

When you realize his ambitions = Jar Jar Binks....

Well, I've made you all sad now. I'm going to go drink now.

Artman 02-12-07 10:22 AM

He took about ten yrs off Star Wars. I believe he's said once Jurassic Park came out in 93, the wheels started turning...it still took him five yrs to bring TPM to the screen. He just moves so freakin slow....

it was probably for the better that he didn't direct 'Empire Strikes Back' ;)

The only way I'm buying this set is if it's loaded to the gills with documentaries and deleted scenes. I held off buying the last...2 editions, if only for this.

Dalvin 02-12-07 01:08 PM

agreed. I'm popping for this set ONLY if ALL 6 films are released on HD-DVD or Blu Ray , loaded with everything that is relevant. I will not rebuy Star Wars until its re-released in HD!!!

With the original music! (The Conan O' Brien DVD omits some Williams's themes incorporated in the original broadcast.)

Josh H 02-12-07 03:17 PM

Does a bear shit in the woods?

It's Lucas and a chance to make more money on Star Wars, of course there will be one.

cultshock 02-12-07 06:35 PM

If there's only a standard DVD release this year, I'm passing and holding out for an HD release. I can wait.

MANBREASTS 02-13-07 03:39 AM

I think it would be awesome if Lucas re-released Star Wars with nothing new added to the movie accept it being in a shiny metal tin that said "30th anniversary" on the front. Just so we could read all the posts from people saying there not going to buy it even though we know they will.

Apone 02-13-07 04:02 AM

I can only hope that they will remaster A New Hope and revise its sountrack.

coli 02-13-07 12:33 PM

This will be the easiest decision for me in the history of SW movies on home video: If it contains the OOT fully remastered in Anamorphic Widescreen, I will buy it along with the PT & SE versions for whatever Lucas wants to charge me. If there is no OOT in the upcoming set, then I will pass, cause there is no reason to rebuy the SE & PT movies with more changes. Thanks George, you have made me a picky SW fan, a far cry from 10 years ago when I was a SW fan and would buy anything related to it.

More OT, has the Star Wars on Blu-Ray in 2007 rumour been debunked? Cuz I didn't see a mention of it in this thread (though I read about it on another forum).

There are always a set of fans that will buy anything with SW plastered on it, but I have noticed that group is dwindling.

Lucas had everyone by the balls on the '04 set and the '06 set. Even though the '04 set was the SE, it was the first time the OT was on DVD, so many bought it because there was nothing else other then bootlegs.

Same goes for the '06 OOT set, many bought it cause the only other way to have it was bootlegs, even though it was not 16 x 9.

This set has to have something for people to buy, and I don't think that new documentaries and deleted scenes will get the majority juiced like before, cause most of us have seen them somewhere or another. Most people I know don't love the SE, but do think some of the changes are good. Most people I know don't love the PT movies, but think they are entertaining but still inferior to the OT. So I would ask anyone out there, why would you want to rebuy those versions when most people don't love them? The reason we kept rebuying the OOT or OT before 1997 was that we loved those movies to death, and that drove us to keep opening our wallets.
