Great Movie! Features haven't been announced just yet, but artwork is shown.

Mike Adams 01-26-07 03:51 PM

That's fantastic! :) The artwork sucks, but I've come to expect that. I'll just keep the box from my original version.

Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. 01-26-07 03:55 PM

awesomeness

Doughboy 01-26-07 04:05 PM

I hope it comes out on HD-DVD. When I buy it, I'll charge it to Mr. Underhill's credit card. ;)

meritocracy 01-26-07 04:19 PM

As expected with Universal, we have some truly craptacular artwork, and yet another round in the ludicrously named SE game (Jane Doe).

Regardless, it's obviously time to hit ebay sometime soon and dump my OOP release.

theflyingdutch 01-26-07 06:24 PM

And all those people who just couldn't wait and paid oodles on ebay for the priviledge of ownership.

Yea, what's up with the "edition" names? Holy Schnike edition, Don't Call Me Shirley edition, etc. Just call it the "We released a crap, bare bones edition the first time around and now we added a few things and will charge you more for it" edition.

By the way, I still have yet to see "Spies Like Us" in widescreen. Hello? How about getting these some of these titles somewhat close to modern technology. Some of us have 52" screens to fill!

bballing 01-26-07 07:16 PM

Huge news.

packaok 01-26-07 07:51 PM

YES!!!! I purchased my Fletch DVD from the $4.88 Universal display at Wal*Mart on the night that Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith came out on DVD. I opened it and watched it.

Flash forward to 3 months ago... As a joke, I listed it on Half.Com for $99.

IT SOLD! I could not have timed that more perfectly... :)

OwlAtHome 01-26-07 07:58 PM

What could make this any better than the current edition?

fryinpan1 01-26-07 08:10 PM

I just sold the previous edition on Ebay for close to $50.

Geofferson 01-26-07 08:14 PM

Awesome news.

Matthew Ackerly 01-26-07 08:36 PM

This is great news... I've been waiting for this forever. This is one of my all-time favorite comedys!

Finally, it gets the treatment it deserves.

cactusoly 01-26-07 08:52 PM

what about Fletch Lives?

Matthew Ackerly 01-26-07 08:55 PM

Both films in a boxset would have been really cool!

LorenzoL 01-27-07 08:27 AM

I don't like the cover and the "edition" name but I'm glad that is being re-released.

TheNightFlier 01-27-07 11:31 AM

Sold my old copy last month for $60 on ebay. The cover art looks like it's from the one sheet except they added the white background. The "Jane Doe" reference is really obscure if haven't seen the movie.

great call! i got mine for free at Gamestop. thanks meritocracy!!!!

shaggy 01-27-07 02:17 PM

Awesome news. Fletch is my favorite character of all time. I love the books and the films, after waiting forever for Fletch Lives I never thought we'd get this. I will buy it no matter what, but here's hoping for a Chevy Chase or Gregory Mcdonald commentary. Unfortunately we lost Michael Ritchie. They could also get Kevin Smith to do it, he seems to like doing commentaries.

dvd_luver 01-27-07 03:07 PM

OMG, the inflated eBay prices only have a few more months to go! :), it's kind of like watching the stock market go up and down. When this is released, they will take a permanent hit. The artwork is kind of dull, the tag "Jane Doe" is corny. Still, glad this is being re-released and hopefully with better video quality. Though, I don't mind the OOP versions transfer, it's quite watchable.

Matthew Ackerly 01-27-07 03:10 PM

I could care less about the coverart.... I'm sure someone will create a cool custom for it. Unless its a slipcase...

I'm just glad they are finally giving it a special edition.

You mean the original? It's been with the movie since day one, so to me that is the cover art. The only good thing I can say about the SE art is that it kept the photo from the poster, but that white background and new title logo have got to go.

OldBoy 01-27-07 06:55 PM

do you think there would be any reason whatsoever to keep the original release?

meritocracy 01-27-07 07:03 PM

Not really. The original was pretty barebones, albeit with a decent anamorphic transfer.

I got it in Oct. 2005 at WalMart for $4.88. :D

I'd only double dip for a dramatic improvement in video/audio and substantial features.

I sold my 15 or so sealed copies from Walmart plus I picked up several other copies long after the Walmart thing. Was fun while it lasted!

LasVegasMichael 01-28-07 09:50 AM

Great news. I never did open the one I got from CH back in '05. Now is a good a time as any to dump it on eBay, assuming there is still some decent demand.

Hard to tell. I'd say just the box, really. Of course there have been DVDs like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective where they dropped a scene we'd all become accustomed to seeing in the home video version and it made some people want to hang on to what they had (of course actually having that film in widescreen was more important to many, like myself). Since Fletch already has an anamorphic widescreen transfer, if they dick around with it by adding scenes that slow down the film or dropping stuff the director just doesn't like anymore, that would make a very good case for keeping the original release.

The bottom line is that you'll just have to balance how much you'll lose if you wait until the SE is released to sell off your original DVD with how much you'll have to pay to get another copy of the original if the SE turns out to be awful.

Personally, I don't think I paid more than $9.99 or so for my copy, so I'm not letting it go until the SE is in my hands, I've watched it, and have also checked for comments about alterations here in the forum. Even then, I'll still be keeping the box from the original (or at least the chapter insert), unless they wise up and keep the original poster art and title artwork for the SE.

rexinnih 01-29-07 09:18 AM

Great. Looking forward to seeing this again.

islandclaws 01-30-07 12:43 AM

Ahhh... just sold my old copy for $65 on ebay. Can't wait to pick up the new one for $10 at BB.

Snowmaker 01-30-07 07:12 AM

Damn, I had only picked up 1 copy from Wal-Mart and sold it sealed on ebay last year and only got about $45. :(

I'll likely get this new one, since I never got to see my previous DVD.

tylergfoster 01-30-07 07:51 AM

I bought a bunch of Fletch's too, made a great deal of dough. Good times...

I prefer the cover of the old one. Too bad I didn't keep it.

Chevy said in an EW interview, I think, that this was his favorite of his movies, so he'll probably do commentary or an interview.

Meritocracy??? You mean a system in which only really good movies command high prices? I think you mean "thanks, capitalism", because even though this is a good movie, people are only paying high prices because you can't get it anymore. You might also want to thank the ignorance of your bidders, since anyone who's heard of the impending release of the SE wouldn't be wasting money on the original DVD now. If anything, they'd wait until people upgraded and traded in their originals at used DVD shops.
