I disagree. Fletch's various identities (not necessarily disguises I grant you) are of huge signficance, and most of the identities are very funny. G. Gordon Liddy, Dr. Rosen Rosen, the FAA guy, John Cocktoastin. All hilarious.

This kind of makes me want to go back and buy the 1st release again. Like most people here, I sold mine on ebay months ago. I think I'm most dissapointed in the missing commentary by Chevy Chase. If thier was a commentary track on this dvd it would have gone over better with fans of the film.
Why? Even with the AWFUL extras the presentation of the film itself is noticeably better.

Is it a good, sturdy one, like HP: GoF from Best Buy or a flimsy one like FD3 at Target?

Anyone find this at Target this week?

dvd_luver 05-02-07 02:14 PM

That slipcover did the trick for me, I was thinking I might hold off but I had to 2dip on it.

It's your standard slipcase. So, no, not flimsy.

I picked it up at Best Buy, but I did also see it at Target. Same price, too.

How much at Target? Thanks you.

I was completely suprised when I walked into BesBuy yesterday. What a great cover. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don;t think I have seen a lenticular cover that is so well done. I sold my copy about a year ago for about $35 so I am ahead in the game. Plus I found several copies thru the years, thanks Universal.

Just finished watching Fletch and the extras, they had a featurette with the cast...all of them EXCEPT Chevy Chase...WTF?? How can do a feature about the movie and NOT include Fletch himself? This Jane Doe edition was a waste of money for anyone who already owns the original.....Nice slipcase but thats it...

The video seemed much improved to me, so it was well worth it.

I totally agree. I had no interest in buying this until I saw the cover.

Yeah. I normally respect the Home Theater Forum but the level of improvement in this new transfer compared to the old one was pretty much completely undermined when the HTF reviewer gave it a mediocre picture quality rating without comparing it to the old disc.

"Fletch" was made in 1985 and as such the new transfer isn't exactly reference-quality but if you are familiar with the previous one (the HTF reviewer wasn't) the new one is really something to appreciate in spite of the absolutely awful extras.

The HTF review was the first one to surface to my knowledge and it definitely caused a wave of "why buy this if the extras suck and the transfer is no better?" but as the owner of both discs I can definitively say the new release is a good thing.

#1: The transfer looks great in comparison to the old disc.

#2: As crappy as the extras are, they're better than nothing (which is about the best you can say about this release, but still). The only thing the old disc had was a trailer and unlike a lot of Universal re-releases that made it onto the new disc so there's no reason to keep the old one.

#3: "Fletch" is actually readily available on DVD for the first time in years.

For those three reasons I give this new DVD a recommendation in spite of it's massive shortcomings in the "extras" department. If you like "Fletch" there's no better version available.

Yea, it is a pretty weak edition but for improved audio/video quality you can't go wrong. Plus you know it's going to be selling for under $10 in about a month.

cracksky 05-12-07 12:29 AM

Fletch question for all. I remember seeing this film in the theaters in 1985 and then when I rented the video, it seemed like the last line was changed/altered (the one about the credit card). Does anyone else recall another line or is it mentioned in the extras on this disc?

Are the differences enough to notice in comparison screen shots? That's what I'd like to see.

I was among those who was ecstatic back when this was found in the $4.88 selection at WalMart. I don't want to buy it again unless I'm really going to see something.

Clearer transfer, better colors, what you would expect from a video transfer that was more than likely done in Hi-Definition first. Not a mind blowing difference between oop Fletch and this Jane Doe se. but enough to warrant a 2-dip, for under $10, imo yes. I was amazed, but the oop video transfer is still pretty good as well. If you love the film that much and want that awesome slipcover and the improved video quality+slim extras. For under $10, what do you have to lose? if you like the movie that much like me go and 2dip, you only paid a slim $5 on it.

packaok 05-12-07 10:10 AM

Considering the fact that I sold my opened, $4.88 Wal*Mart copy (purchased the night Revenge of the Sith was released) online last year for $75, I would say that this one is a great deal :)

cracksky 06-10-07 10:13 PM

I just watched this disc and even in the brief doc they mention Fletch referring to the Doberman as Cujo but on this DVD it seems to have been removed. Would they have had to pay Warner for that mention?

Edited: unnecessary comment. :)

I haven't watched it yet, but no. They wouldn't have to pay for the rights for the name Cujo.

DJLinus 06-14-07 07:26 PM

I'm watching the new DVD right now and in the scene where Fletch is snooping through Sally Ann Cavanaugh's house he calls out "Cujo". Is that what they are referring to on the featurette?

Anyway, I'm glad this movie's back in print.

Dr Mabuse 06-14-07 08:29 PM

i like fletch...

won't double dip...

but i've fletch 1 and 2 on the $5.50 bin at wally world this year...

only a month or so ago in fact...

i don't think it was ever that scarce...

Living Dead 06-15-07 12:27 AM

Just ordered this from Columbia House. I forgot that it had been rereleased!

You're absolutely correct. My mistake. I was mis-remembering that line from the Doberman scene. I was reading that they changed "Uh Oh, better get MAACO" to just "Uh Oh" during the car chase scene on IMDB so I was a little paranoid I guess.
