Anybody have a list of the early Universal DVD's that were released in square Cd style Jewel cases. I have seen the backdraft cover, and IMDB has Scarface and Casino listed as Jewel case dvds with no pictures. If anyone has these and can give me UPC codes, and scans, i would love to have these documented for posterity.

Universal City, California -- Beginning March 31, 1998, Universal Studios Home Video will eliminate the jewel case packaging of its DVD releases, offering only the keep case packaging. The first titles to be offered exclusively in keep case, which comprise the March DVD Collection announced earlier, include Brazil, Conan the Destroyer, Darkman, Dune, Parenthood, Rooster Cogburn, Sneakers and The Sting for $24.98 suggested retail price each, the dual-layered versions of The Deer Hunter and Spartacus for $26.98 SRP each, and the Collector's Editions of Scarface, Field of Dreams, 12 Monkeys and Vertigo for $34.98 SRP each. The order close date is March 16, 1998. Packaging for the Collector's Editions will contain a special eye-catching banner and border treatment. In addition, the Collector's Editions will include added-value programming such as documentaries, audio commentaries and interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, and other extras. Universal Studios Home Video is a part of Universal Studios, a unit of The Seagram Company Ltd., a global beverage and entertainment company.

I know "Apollo 13" and "Babe" also were in jewel cases, but I don't have UPCs or scans.

I want to say that "The Shadow," "Waterworld," "The Paper," and "Sudden Death" were also in jewel cases.

Based on the the original street dates of the above, you can likely add "Beethoven" and "The River Wild" to your list as well.

"Timecop," "Leave it to Beaver," "Conan the Barbarian," "Kull The Conqueror," some Hercules episodes and "The Nutty Professor" may be in the last wave to be released in jewel cases before that press release.

Also some Sony discs were also sold in jewel case early on. They apparently gave retailers a choice as some of the first product catalogs had art showing both keep cases and jewel cases.

thanks for the help so far. I really need cover art to back some of these, as a search isn't finding much on titles that came out 9 years ago. The amazon links were very helpful.

are there any websites that let you sort by release dates? I can't imagine much was coming out around that time, and would help track down some of the info needed

put together a good list after a bit of research. Oddly enough the UPC's listed for Field of Dreams and Apollo 13 turned up with the 2-discers that later appeared. I compiled the list from http://dvdlist.kazart.com/ by searching Jewel Case

Some of the Universal jewel case titles also had cardboard slipcovers. I wish I'd picked up at least one of them when I had the chance; I've got the original The Craft DVD in the jewel case though.

I'd love to see cover scans (front, back, and disc -- just to see if it's the same as the one in the keepcase) of Fierce Creatures and The Net and would also be interested in buying either one or both if someone might be willing to part with them.

I'll add that the computer animation film This Metal Mind was originally released in a jewel case inside a DVD-sized longbox (the standard jewel-case cover insert was still there, though) and later in a keepcase. I think it was a Simitar release. Also, there was a "Virtual Aquarium" DVD (I forget the exact title) that was released in a jewel box and also in a keepcase.

Lastly, we should probably mention that the "jewel box" DVD releases we're talking about don't include the DIVX versions, which were released in packages that were very similar to standard jewel cases.
