Has anyone here built their own DVD Cabinet?
I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on my theater and would like to build my own DVD cabinet. I am getting close to the 1,000 DVD threshold and no matter how hard I look, I can't find any storage solution that I like. I was wondering who else here has done this and what type of dimensions they used and if anyone had any tips or tricks. Pics are always helpful as well.

I built my own very nice shelf. Check http://danwiz.com/Dec2005DVDCollecti...Collection.php
I posted information about it in Post pics of your DVD collection and HT, Part 8 on Page 11 and answered questions on page 11 and 12. The link to "Post pics...., Part 8 is here: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread....&page=11&pp=25

My dad and I, mostly my dad, built this cabinet about 3 or 4 years ago. It holds most of my collection but there is a little overflow. I'm pretty happy with it. It doesn't really help you with what you're looking for but I thought I would post anyway.

Love how you have Lost and Gilligan's Island next to one another.

In our duplex, I had built our DVD shelving. We went the binder route in our new house, since our family room did not have a good enough wall for the type of shelving I would want.
For my old one, I filled in the space on one side of the TV (a media rack was on the other side). For us, this ended up being a nice four feet. I then decided to go floor to ceiling (8 feet). I made it in two 4 foot parts for easy assembly/moving. We decided to not go with doors, so the design was very simple: just four foot shelves sandwiched in between four foot sides. Although it was very simple, once stained, sealed and assembled, the result was very nice since it took up the full height and filled the dead space on one side of the TV.

A key factor is going to be, how many DVDs are you going to own?
I didn't build a cabnet. I built some shelves instead. I didn't know for sure how my collection was going to grow and I placed the shelves so I could keep adding as the collection grew.
With an enclosed cabnet, it's going to be hard to increase the size of your storage space after the fact. So decide how much room you are going to need now.

When I designed it I think I figured it would hold about 900 standard size DVDs.

Nope, but I was forced to build my own dvd/film vault. About 4 years ago I found out it was not only safer, but it made my wife happy.
I coverted a walk-in closet(long time members need not read on...you've heard it all before) into my vault. Thousands of titles looked much better filed like a real library. I also keep all my film reference books in there. It is secured via an electronic lock. And my dogs do a great job of defending the "stash". Fort fucking Knox.
It was simple to convert....and I'm an idiot when it comes to even putting up sturdy shelves. Plenty of room for about another 1,000 dvds/HD discs and "can't get rid of" VHS tapes.
Finding room now for my 6 kayaks is a much tougher challenge. 10 months ago I had only one.

I built two spinners a couple of years ago. For the space they take up, they hold a lot of dvd's. Each spinners holds about 750 dvd's or over 900 HD discs.
They are almost 8' tall, 16" square and take up very little floor space.

In our previous house, we hired our handyman to build 2 custom built-in shelves on either side of our living room fireplace.
He charged 70 bucks for each built-in bookcase.
