What Makes A DVD Rare?
What makes a DVD rare? I've been watching the movie The Stand by Stephen King which they say is rare. It's only been out a few years, and it's worth about 139.00 and that is like new. Good is $99.99. What makes this movie rare???
Thanks,
Claire

When they stop making the dvds and the demand outstrips the supply made.
Maybe I should sell my Stand DVD if it's going for that much

I didn't even know this was valuable. I picked it up for my wife a while back since she's a big Stephen King nut. I guess I'll be keeping my eyes open for this at used stores when I go out now.

i believe the stand was one of those Artisan/republic titles that reverted back to Paramount, and in turn went back to lions gate. So if they have remaining stock they could sell it out, or they could produce a new version. I don't expect it to be OOP for very long though.
paramount had announced certain titles (John Wayne stuff, Love Happy, The Champion, Cujo, other king titles) Then they passed all the theatrical movie rights back over to Lions Gate while holding onto It's A Wonderful Life and a majority of the television liscenses.
High Noon, Rio Grande, The Quiet Man, Invasion of the Body Snatchers all went OOP for a short time, but were replenished in the last two months, and the prices fell out.

So i scoured the pawn shops and got another, so i have 2.

In one case, Amazon actually sent me a DVD that never got released. I used to be into this band called Static X, and they were releasing a DVD of interviews and live footage. I pre-ordered from Amazon, and the DVD was made and printed, one problem: Sharon Osbourne never signed off on footage from Ozzfest. The band apparently kept trying very close to the actual release, because Amazon charged me and shipped the DVD before the release date the band hoped for.

why do people use amazon marketplace as a guide to it's value? also ebay buy it now prices.
its only worth what someone has actually paid for it.
the uk version which was spread over 2 discs used to sell for around 20 quid. the artisan version which i think has a commentary used to sell for alot less on ebay.co.uk

Because if you have the only copy of something, you can basically make up any price you want and get it.
I sold The Sand Pebbles last week for $100. There was no "guide" for its value other than a recent Ebay auction for $46, so I just made it up.
It sold in less than 12 hours.
Also, in the case of The Stand, when you see 3 copies listed for $120, and they're gone the next day, that's a pretty good guide.

i doubt most of the stuff sells at those inflated prices. most people would prefer to buy on ebay where they have a better idea of the quality of the item and who the seller is. ok for selling new items though.

Honestly, what makes a DVD rare is that there were relatively few copies pressed in relation to the normal DVD production run. This happens with limited-edition versions of titles, or titles that don't sell well and production ceases. As a general rule, DVDs that are truly rare aren't often in high demand, which is why they become rare to begin with.
If you're asking what makes a DVD valuable, it's what most everyone else has been saying... demand outweighs supply. You can have a DVD where there's only 500 copies in existence, but if nobody wants it, it ends up in the overstock bin. There are also DVDs where 10,000 copies have been pressed, but if it's in great demand, you may never find one "in the wild" (i.e. outside of places like eBay or Amazon).
There are of course some cases where a DVD is not necessarily rare, nor is the content in high demand, but it still commands high prices. Those are usually DVDs that are only in demand because they're known to be out of print, and since no more are being made, people often have to pay whatever price hoarders want to charge. As I've mentioned before though, once it becomes apparent that the items aren't truly as rare as one would assume, the prices come tumbling down. An example is the "Deluxe Edition" of Disney's TARZAN. Being Disney, people automatically assume it's gonna be in limited supply and highly sought-after, but since it sat on the shelves for months, or perhaps years before going out of print, the price slid from over $100 to about $29 now that it's not in such demand anymore. I look for this trend to continue, although there are definitely some titles that are genuinely rare and will probably always command top prices.

Not true. I sell dvds for $100+ all the time on Amazon, even though I am a new seller with no feedback.
At the same time, I have the EXACT SAME dvds listed on Ebay for $50, with a photo, and 100% feedback dating back to 2000, and they never sell. The only people shopping on Ebay are people who want something for nothing.
Lots of buyers prefer Amazon because Ebay has a (deserved or not) reputation of being full of scam artists.

It would be interesting if there were a realiable source to find out production numbers for individual titles. Just because something is out of print doesn't mean there aren't 500,000 copies out there already.

Mel Brooks Collector Set (7pc) (Coll) 39.99 (I only mention this because it is vhs)

And then there are DVD titles that are pulled shortly after release. Those seem to be the hardest to find.
Example: Little Shop of Horrors (1986) Special Edition (with the alternate ending and song).

If you go region free most if not all titles are readily available. So, I don't see paying exorbitant prices for something unless it has some special features or packaging and you really, really want it. Besides, most OOP usually are reissued w/ better PQ and audio.
