It's just a preference. Some people like their cars to be blue. Some people prefer wheat bread to white.

A good number of people on here are collectors. Packaging is part of the collectability factor for some. Tins are different and unique. They tend to be greeted with "Oh, that's cool...where did you get that?" when shown to others. Plus they protect the contents like nothing else.

For the Superman set.... he's the "man of steel" so what better way to house the DVDs? Just makes perfect sense to me :)

WHV is still taking calls, isn't it? From those who have, as yet, not been able to find it, and are having to go to eBay or other such avenues?

Why wouldn't the re-release have the same exclusive content and packaging?

Yep, I called them a couple days ago for the mailers. Only took about 4 minutes total from the time I dialed their number until I hung up.

Just like other releases with slip covers and the like. They only make so many copies of the outer packaging.

Just a guess but I would bet the next release will be the inner box only without the tin. It looks a lot like something they designed so they could do just that.

<b>If</b> they even do that. You're right, though, if they have to release it again, it's not necessarily gonna be exactly the same. Besides, we simply <i>don't know</i> when or if the full 14 discs will be available in the future. It's a question of a bird in the hand being better than two in the bush -- people would much rather buy the tin now and get the replacement discs from WHV than wait and see what the corrected sets will look like and contain.

If you'd have been paying attention, it's been made clear that the problem had only just been discovered, so replacement discs hadn't been replicated yet. Just because you assumed an 800 number meant they had replacement discs ready and waiting, it doesn't mean tdb.com is foolish for reporting to those of us who actually <b>read</b> news posts instead of assuming we know everything that the disc are now <i>really</i> being replicated and should be shipping soon.

What country do you live in? I don't sell on Ebay, so I have no vested interested, but in my country (the US) we have this thing called capitalism that allows people to sell things for what people will pay for them.

Now, I'll agree that if it is something people need to live (like water/food in a disaster area) trying to make a huge profit is a bad thing, but DVDs? Give me a break.

Not a dumb question, but you're apparently not the kind of collector who sees the value in that kind of thing. The difference in packaging would matter to me; I dig limited releases with tin outer shells and so forth, and I strive to acquire them whenever I can. I will pay a little more to do so.

People often pay much more for something nearly impossible to find any other way. I have. But I don't feel ripped off. I agreed to the price, as I thought it reasonable enough, given the availability of the item. Being a collector tends to be expensive.

Out of curiosity, what amount do you deem "overpaying" in this case?

It's still the buyer that determines the general price value. Just like any other commodity. If the buyer wasn't willing to pay the high price then the seller would lower the price. You said it yourself, people are willing to pay the price. Economics 101 (or even the high school version).

What is up with these feelings toward The Digital Bits? What specifically has Bill Hunt done that has incurred such hate from some?

I should have made that clearer the first time. Anyone who overpays (lets say 2 to 3 times MSRP) because they believe a dvd is no longer in print without taking the time to verify that it's being re-released deserves to be ripped off.

For example, two weeks ago people were paying $70 for Gandhi. Who would do such a thing when it is so easy to verify that, yes, a new edition is coming soon? Those people.

I collect rare dvds. I've bought and sold single discs for over $100 before. I just don't buy tins or other 'limited' editions.

Guys, I would highly suggest that you drop the posts that aren't directly related to the topic. Posts like these, may just end up with someone getting suspended.
