There is no logic behind it, other then I was really in need of money and I got close to $3000 for my collection when it was all said and done. I probably got an average of $6 per dvd and I have not spent more than $6 on over 99% of what I've rebought so far.

I'm addicted.

Yeah, this was kind of a "backwards" double-dip. After having bought the official DVD when it came out, I noticed a Malaysian DVD in the "used" rack of a local retailer, and picked up just as a collectible. In fact, I bought it yet again on eBay because it had a completely different cover, but it turned out to be a rental copy in the box from some kind of bootleg, hence the different cover. I traded in the discs at a pawn shop, but kept the box for the cover.

FWIW, there was also a 2-pack with the first two prequels, but I think that was fullscreen-only.

joliom 11-30-06 04:06 PM

I think this would be a better thread if it was "how many DVD's have you triple-dipped on?" Seriously my list of double-dips is easily over 100. It seems ridiculous to try and list them all. I bet most people here at DVDTalk who either a) have been collecting for at least 5 years, or b) are not fundamentally opposed to the idea of double-dipping except under the most ardent circumstances, have as many as me. It's kind of like saying "what DVD's have you bought on sale?" For most people (around here) it's going to be a lot.

Well my list was pretty sizeable too, but even though I have been collecting for several years it didn't necessarily follow that I had over 100 double-dips. That's partly due to the fact that I've avoided a lot of them by not buying everything when it's first released, and mostly because my tastes in DVDs dictate that what I buy is a very low "double-dip" risk, because once music videos, documentaries, and other oddball DVDs are released, they're almost never followed up with Special Editions like most mainstream movies.

As my list indicates, I'm far from being immune, and this thread should probably be "What have you double-dipped on recently?" Still, if you've got pages and pages of double-dips, just list the recent ones if you want, or maybe the ones that were the most painful (had to buy a boxed set of four movies because you only needed the fourth one but also wanted the box, etc.)

Regardless of how many threads exist on this subject, I'm glad the question has been asked again. I read the forum a few times a day and I haven't seen it, so it was nice to throw in my 50 or so titles, and that was only because my iBook was close at hand and contains a list of my DVDs.

Lost track of how many Stargate versions I have gotten.

Now waiting for the Super deluxe ultimate collectors directors uncut extended THX HD restored remastered version.

Yeti4623 12-04-06 06:36 PM

Halloween 1

Halloween 5 (I'm ashamed of this. I don't even like the movie all that much. I just have a weakness for commentaries of older movies, especially horror.)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2

Christine

I also bought the Friday the 13th boxset, even though I already owned 1-5.

I also want to eventually doubledip on First Blood, There's Something About Mary, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Candyman, Beastmaster, Rocky 1, Bill and Ted, and Groundhog Day.

iconoclasm 12-04-06 08:52 PM

does a double dip count if the first purchase was on vhs, and the second on dvd?

i think i have a few movies like killing zoe and slacker that i first owned on vhs, but either cant find them or they melted and no longer work, and so i repurchased on dvd

DarthVong 12-04-06 09:25 PM

Clerks
Superman
Dawn of the Dead
Creepshow 2
Mallrats
Saw
Saw II
Escape From New York
Terminator 2

Sabrett 12-04-06 09:38 PM

I did something even worse than double-dipping. I had the same DVD set in my collection 3 times. I got The OC: Season 1 at Blockbuster (with some credit), watched 1 episode, decided it was "Eh.." and traded it in. Then I bought it again for $5.99 during Target's box set mistake. Someone on this forum wanted it, so I used it in a trade. Then I caught a couple of more episodes and decided I wanted to own it for good this time, so I bought it for $19.99, and then picked up Season 2. Now *that's* depressing.

As for my double dips:

13 Going on 30
Alien vs. Predator
American Pie Movies (single DVDs to boxset)
Chronicles of Narnia
Day After Tomorrow
Donnie Darko
Elektra
Garfield
I, Robot
Ice Age
Jurassic Park (single DVDs to boxset)
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Miss Congeniality
Mr and Mrs Smith
Notting Hill
Parent Trap
Princess Diaries
Saw
Spaceballs
Spider-man

Hm, not bad...

fliggil 12-04-06 10:29 PM

In 5-6 years of buying DVDs, the only title I have managed to double dip on was Double Indemnity. I refuse to double-dip purely for extras (as I really don't watch them), but if there is that great an improvement in transfer, and it is for a movie that I consider essential, I will upgrade. The new release of The Maltese Falcon will be my second double dip as soon as I get around to it.
