A shame really. But like others said, it's likely the only way we're ever going to get a proper widescreen version.
OTOH, it's been a long time, but I remember the colors in the theatrical release being a bit on the muted and dull side.

I've discovered however that Lionsgate has edited the thing. Molly's "Damn you!" is edited out when she first sees the unicorn.
I hate when studios pull this shit. I know its aimed at a young audience, but still...
At least I got the autographed version, so buying it did SOMEBODY some good.

Got the following newsletter from Colan Press today:
A little perspective. Lionsgate Entertainment, through all their mass retailing connections at Wal-Mart and K-Mart and Target and so on, all over the United States, have just sold 35,000 copies of the new LAST UNICORN DVD in the first week of its release. That number is right on their projections and they are very happy. So are we. Good for Lionsgate!
Meanwhile, through the Conlan Press website, Peter's fans have now ordered 1,627 copies of the new DVD, around 1,400 of those before the official February 6th release date — and frankly, we just weren't ready for it. We were expecting a pre-release maximum of maybe 300 copies, tops, not more than five times that number. (Which is why we only ordered 1,000 copies in our initial buy from Lionsgate...though we quickly doubled that number when we saw what was happening.)
So we are running behind. But we're working hard to get caught up!
We ask your patience while we deal with four things:
1) It takes time to prep each copy for autographing. The shrink-wrap and security seals have to be removed without damaging either the DVD or DVD packaging, and the printed art has to be removed from behind its transparent cover.
2) It takes time for Peter to sign each copy, since he is signing in three places and one of the autographs is typically personalized to customer specifications. Also, he can only sign 250-300 a day before his hand starts to give out, and he isn't available for signing every day. He's got book and story deadlines to meet!
3) It takes time to put everything back together, pack it safely for shipment, and deal with all the post office labeling.
4) We're still waiting for our second 1,000-copy order to arrive from Lionsgate.
Right now at least 400 copies have shipped out, and we expect another 200-300 to go out tonight. At this pace we WILL get caught up — but it has definitely been a scramble, and we hope you can be patient with everyone on this end while we manage it.
Thanks to all of you who have ordered, for helping support Peter!
And for all the people on this distribution list who haven't yet ordered, please consider doing so. Peter will only see money for copies of the DVD that are bought through Conlan Press. If you buy it anywhere else, he gets nothing.

If you look at the main page, just below the picture of the DVD cover, look where it says:
THIS DVD EDITION IS APPROVED BY PETER S. BEAGLE. MORE THAN HALF THE PURCHASE PRICE GOES TO SUPPORT HIM AND HIS WORKS. (Note: if you buy it elsewhere, he still isn't getting anything at all. See www.conlanpress.com/youcanhelp for more information.)
If you click the link I bolded, it will take you to another page. Go to the bottom and there's an email address. I hope this is what you're looking for.

Well if the author isn't getting anything from copies sold through stores, etc. as seems to be the case, he might ought to consider getting a new agent or lawyer.

Just finished watching it, and noticed another edit
The scene were the prince is trying to write a poem to the princess, and he's walking up the spiral staircase, in the theatrical (and Laserdisc) release, he gives a frustrated "Damn!". In this dvd release, the film cuts that scene.
As a total lover of this film, I was kinda sad to see its been chopped.

But what's worse? Buying the old pan/scan that's missing actual picture (and the transfer isn't up to snuff) or have a decent quality widescreen version that's missing a couple words that even the author isn't terribly put out by?

agreed that this is an improvement over a P&S transfer, but something tells me they took this out simply to be able to sell it to us again in the future. I need to seek out info on the overseas versions and see if anyone has a correct transfer and full audio.
just a real shame they didn't do it right this time
