King Kong Extended Edition
I just watched the Extended Edition of King Kong last night. Wow!
I kept asking myself "Why weren't these scenes in the theatrical version?".
Both the Ceratops scene and the Swamp scene were great, especially the Swamp scene. If Jackson had left these scenes in and gotten rid of some of the boat scenes I think the movie would have gone over much better.
Looking back on it, the entire plot line with the first mate and the theif/hoodlum/"good boy" young sailor could have been chopped with no hurt to the movie.
What do all of you think? The Swamp creature was awesome!!!

I agree. The new scenes should have been in the theatrical cut, and the Jimmy storyline should have been deleted. The dinosaur stampede also could have been deleted and would have saved the studio millions in CGI costs. The movie almost seems like Jimmy vs. Kong for a while. In the commentary, Peter Jackson mentions he wanted people to care about the characters, but I do not think anyone wants or needs to care about each minor member of the crew. The next time I watch it, I may fast forward until they get to Skull Island and see if that helps with the overall slowness of the movie.

Hey!!
I watched this the other day too and was hoping for a little more time given to Ann and Kong to flesh out that story and characterization. After all, the movie is called King Kong, not "A bunch of guys battling creatures". I did like the extended scene at the bottom of the cliff after the bugs. That helped the transition somewhat. I just thought the Ceratops scene came too soon. I liked the reveal of the Brontos better (a la Jurassic Park) for the first introduction of the dinos. The swamp scene was exciting but absurd at the same time. These people can do almost anything underwater including hold their breath forever and seeing clear as day. Jack would have drowned. Anyway, it was just too unbelievable to enjoy. Same as the bronto stampede. I will say this. The new scenes help show why their group dwindles near the end. So that is a positive thing. But I didn't think they contributed enough as exciting as they were. This set is all about the special features which it delivers in spades.

There's already a very lengthy discussion about the new Kong going on. No need for a new thread for it.
I don't agree though. Although the new scenes certainly didn't take away from Kong, they didn't add anything to the movie either. What we needed was more depth to the characters before the action started to happen on Skull Island, and the extended cut provides nothing of that nature.

The one thing I really like about this Kong movie was the relationship between Kong and Anna. I thought Jackson did an excellent job with that part of the story.

I bought this on account of all the positive reviews regarding the new transfer. I like the new scenes, but at only 13 minutes, they don't add a whole lot.
I appreciate how under the "Scene Select" menu, they indicate which scenes are new, and which are extended.
