I hope that widescreen "Manhunter" disc is available seperately.

I understand that MGM owns the rights to "Manhunter" and not "Red Dragon" but "Manhunter" simply isn't connected to "Silence" and "Hannibal" (especially ever since the vastly-superior "Red Dragon" was released), it tanked and Orion actually went to lengths to distance "Silence" from "Manhunter" as opposed to playing up the connection. I also don't wanna have to repurchase "Hannibal" to get the new "Silence" and "Manhunter" discs.

Is there any indication that this is going to be worth picking up (vs. the 800 other editions of this film that have been released)?

There currently isn't a halfway decent edition of Manhunter on DVD in Region 1. The Anchor Bay "theatrical cut" is a weird hybrid workprint that's missing important footage from the real theatrical cut and has some extra scenes from the expanded TV version. The "Director's Cut" is that full TV version, which a lot of fans (myself included) consider inferior to the original theatrical cut, plus the DVD quality is pretty spotty. The real theatrical cut was eventually released by MGM, but only in pan&scan.

The only decent DVD release up to now has been the Japanese Region 2 disc, which is the real theatrical cut in fairly good quality and has a DTS track.

[Borat]Very nice...[/Borat]

My MGM SE disc has been a bit flaky, and since the WS version doesn't seem to be stocked widely anymore, this is a welcome upgrade for me.

Too bad they couldn't include the commentary Criterion did, somehow.

Because it means I have to keep hanging onto the criterion edition, despite the number of new versions I keep buying, etc.

Ah, that's the piece of information I didn't have. That makes a 'widescreen' R1 release intriguing, assuming that the quality is good and it remains the true theatrical cut.

I own the R2 Japan DTS release and the Anchor Bay "Divimax" edition (for the extras).

I'm hoping for a BD release. When's the "Young Hannibal" prequel coming out? I thought they would save this release to coincide with the theatrical movie.

The Hannibal prequel comes out Feb. 9th, about a week after this DVD will be released.

ouch. February is one of the dumping grounds for alot of the studio's crappier films. There are exceptions though, as Silence of the Lambs was released that month. But this new film has no Hopkins, Foster, or Demme.

Well, I already have the OOP Criterion Silence of the Lambs and the "Special Edition" MGM version that came out when Hannibal did in August 2001.
I'll prob. end up buying the new SE if the features turn out to be any good. Probably wait until a see a good price for it though or wait until the next DDD 20% off sale....

Hannibal was released in February as well. I think the release date has more to do with tradition than dumping a piece of turd out there. Of course, that's not to say the movie won't be one.

I hope they fix the sound and picture issues (the current mgm disc is too bright, and there is no bass whatso ever during the prison scene's between Clarice and Hannibal (even though the french and spanish 2.0 tracks contain bass)

I'm waiting for the Blu-Ray as well. But, as Rypro just mentioned, I much prefer the transfer and audio of the Criterion disc to the current SE, even though it was non-anamorphic and only Dolby Surround.

If it ain't Hopkins, it ain't Lecter.

And Michael Mann's a hack.

If Michael Mann's a hack, Brett Ratner is Ed Wood.

This will be the third time I gladly buy Silence.
