My first player was a Cambridge Soundworks model for just over $100, which I bought in early 2001.
It lasted a few years, though I eventually upgraded to a progressive scan player.

We got our first player in December 2000. A cheapo Aiwa that did the trick for awhile.
First disc put in the player was American Beauty.

First was a Pioneer 507a(?) or something like that. Got it Christmas of '99 and someone gave me Analyze This. First I bought was A Bug's Life.
Still have the player as my main unit. The HT is getting a complete overhaul this Christmas with a Plasma and an HD player.

Player: Sony DVP-S550D, still own and use (in my home office).
DVD: Casino, still own, haven't double-dipped yet.
My first DVD Player was also a Sony DVP-S550D! It has since retired from my home theater, to my bedroom, but still works like a champ! It's great to see others which had the same good performance from this player.Originally Posted by hal9000

First movie: Blade (Still own it). Funny thing is, I actually owned about 20 DVDs before I even bought a player.

The S550D was my third player and I was still using that in one of the bedrooms, till it just recently died. That was certainly a great piece of machinery with advanced fetures, especially at the time (circa 1999 I believe).Originally Posted by wildman1037

I recall that being a very common thing to hear on the forum years back. With e-tailers like 800.com and Reel.com the prices of movies were insane and it was easy to stock up a dozen movies or so before you got around to the player. Originally Posted by wildman1037

I'll never forget the 3 DVDs for 1.00 sale that 800.com had or the constant coupons that Reel.com offered. *sniff*

I remember my first dvd player cost $600.00. it was a pioneer 606 D. purchased between 1998-99. bought it before I had anything to play. although I used for awhile to play blondie live 1978 video cd. A few years ago, I gave this player to my parents, it died a quick death, by a power outage, but it has a special place in my heart since it was my first and expensive player, and even though it could't play cd-r's yet, it was a very good player, although it took quite some time to load a dvd movie.
some of the first films I bought were:
the faculty
snake eyes, urban legend(this got me started on widescreen, when i first watched the movie, i just watch it widescreen, and been watching film like that ever since.)
dick, mystery men, singin in the rain(first edition by mgm) I bought the matrix later on.
good times for I and my player.

I also had a Sony DVP-S550D as my first player. Actually, it is my only player I've purchased and it is still in use today.

My first player was a floor-model RCA from Best Buy sometime in '99 I believe. Its sitting in the basement somewhere. My first DVD was the 5-Star Independence Day, which I still have.

My first player was a Pioneer, got it for Christmas in '99 along with The Truman Show and The General's Daughter both of which I still have (have yet to upgrade the Truman Show). The first DVD I bought myself was Ghostbusters 15th Ann. Ed it's still one of my all time best DVDs.
Unfortunately, my Pioneer player crapped out on me about a year after I got it, I replaced it with a Sony player that crapped out a year later, and replaced it with a Toshiba which I still use as my primary player and has held up quite well. when it finally craps out on me is when I'll take the HD plunge I think.

My first DVD player, purchased in August of 2000 at Sears, was a JVC XV-M555BK, with three disc trays. My first discs, all of which I still have, were:
The Princess Bride (bare-bones edition)
Ghostbusters
The Abyss (2-disc set)
The Prince of Egypt
Supergirl (International Edition)
I bought a region-free single-disc JVC last September from 220-electronics.com. The move was prompted by the old JVC having trouble with my theatrical version of The Return of the King. I figured that since (1) despite that glitch, the old JVC had been a workhorse for me and (2) JVC had probably improved their DVD technology in the intervening 5 years, it was safe to go with a JVC again - and I was not disappointed.
I donated the old JVC to the local Ronald McDonald House a few months ago.

Picked up my first player in winter of '99, a Sony, don't remember the model number. I gave it to my ex-gf since she needed one and I have 3 other players now. First DVDs were American History X, Taxi Driver and Stop Making Sense. Still have all of em'.
It's funny now, when I got into DVD I told myself that I was only going to buy a few... My favorite films, some Kubrick, that's about it.
Yeah, that happened. Other fond memories from "back in the day"... The first time that I ran that Sony into my VCR and discovered macrovision... Finding DVDTalk shortly after I got the player... Lurking here for 4 months or so before signing up.

Bought a Sony DVP-NS300 as our first DVD player in 2001 at Good Guys (R.I.P.). Bought The Fox and The Hound and The Sound of Music the same weekend. The Fox and The Hound wouldn't have been our first choice, but there was a real scarcity of kids DVDs back then. All the good Disney stuff was on moratorium. Played The Sound of Music first and it immediately started skipping. Not a real impressive first demo for the family and in-laws. After about 3 tries of trying to clean the disc I finally got the offending particle removed. My wife was very familiar with Sound of Music and immediately noticed lots of things on the sides (because of it being widescreen) that she'd never seen before, so it turned out to be a positive first experience. Still have the DVD player but it's not in use.

I bought my first DVD several months before getting a player, Tomorrow Never Dies in the silver cover. My first player was an RCA that we took back, then we got a Toshiba SD2109, which lasted several years and my parents still have, but it locks up on certain titles. I currently have a Sony Progressive scan 5-disc player.
I initially waited on getting into DVD until either Star Wars or Star Trek was announced. When the Star Trek started coming, I thought, "Well, George certainly won't be far behind so lets dive in!"

I actually got mine about 9 years ago next week. I remember going home for break and picking one up. I worked at Circuit City at the time and got an open box deal on an RCA (I think). No idea how much I paid for it but I was blown away by the picture quality and pretty disappointed in the audio (having come from LD). My first title was US Marshalls.
Forgot to add that even though I worked at CC, they couldn't get me to buy a DIVX player...even though that's what I sold.

I don't remember what my first player was, but my first two discs were Mallrats and The Manchurian Candidate in July of 2000, followed up 2 weeks later by MST3K: The Movie.

I saved up for almost 8 months to purchase my first DVD player I believe in May of 2000. It was a Sharp (I purchased @ costco for $240 - it was the second cheapiest model), and I purchased END OF DAYs and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH with it... I still have the DVDs and while the DVD hasn't been my primary player for a long time, its still hooked up on an extra TV at home...

Bought my first player, a Sony, at The Good Guys in Sept. of 1998. The Sony and the store are gone.
My first DVD title was Contact which I purchased the same day. Still have the movie.

My first player was a Samsung 709 that I picked up in the Summer of '99. The first two discs I bought were Highlander, and The Right Stuff...hey Highlander actually looked sharp on a 20 inch TV with composite inputs!
The Samsung was one of the many that couldn't play the Matrix for whatever reason...I remember taking the disc to Best Buy and trying it out on other players to see if it was my player or the disc.
I just want to give thanks to Value America, 800.com and other dead e-tailers for giving me dirt cheap dvds.

What was that site where you clicked on links and sponsors and got points? Then you took the points and bought gift certificates?
The site used a yellow bus or something as their logo. I always remember the name but I cant now for some reason.

It's a yellow taxi. Hmmm... They're still active, wonder how long it takes to get GCs now? Looks like it's survey based instead of click based these days.
But my favorite was Jaboom... Remember that one? They were paying out every few days.
