CONTEST: 3rd Ever, "Pick $50 worth of DVD's from DDD and win a prize!"

This is the 3rd time i've done this and really enjoyed it last time. The previous winners were Cameron and Space Monkey and i still have most of the movies that they picked out for me. The only power i have over the choices is that i get to choose the top 10 lists that you will vote on. After that, its up to the people to make the decision. Good Luck!

1. You can submit any size order as long as it doesn't go over $50.

2. No movies that i already own. You can check my collection in Sig. Be sure to check ALL the Sections to make sure its not under Criterion, Animated, HD-DVD, etc..

3. Only one order per person. So you cannot post 10 different orders and try to get the prize that way.

4. All entries must be made by Tuesday 9 p.m. Central time.

5. On Tuesday night, I will then make a poll with the best/most interesting orders. Everyone will then be able to vote on which order i will make. This poll will be closed by about Noon Friday.

THE PRIZE: This is going to be the best prize yet. Cameron won a Criterion and Snow White the first time. Space Monkey won 3 Limited Editions(He can post the names if he wants.) But i can guarentee that this years prize is going to be the BEST. There could be OOP, Box Sets, and Limited Edition DVD's. I will tailor the prize towards the winner so that they won't be getting doubles.

That's it. Post an order and you could win a TON of cool DVD's. Pretty simple. So get cracking and help me buy some movies. Also, you can edit your order up until the deadline Tuesday 9 p.m. central time.

Here's the Link to last years contest: Last Year's Contest

I also hope that Cameron or Space Monkey will come back to defend their crown.

Thanks and good luck!

You don't have to be a transformers fan to like this. $10.52

Changed things around a touch now that I know of the 20% off coupon:

1. MALTESE FALCON (SE/3D) - $15.82
(The definative Noir and Bogie at his best. Not to mention that you also get two other films here! You get the first version of the Maltese Falcon and the comedic remake with Bette Davis: Satan Meets a Lady)
*#55 on IMDB top 100
*#23 on AFI's top 100
*#26 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills

2. CARNIVAL OF SOULS - $4.79
(Great little spooky story and some would go for Criterions but this disc has a commentary by Mystery Science Theatre's Mike Nelson that will have you rolling. Especially the part about the bath tub. I noticed you had the MST3K Essential Collection. Well, not only do you get a great spooky flick here but you also get Nelson riff track!)

3. BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S ANNIVERSARY - $7.55
(I thought you needed a bit more romance and this film is my favorite flick to pop in on Valentine's Day. Hepburn has never been more beautiful then when she played Holly)
*#4 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time

4. THE FUGATIVE - $4.79
(Wall to wall action here! Some say Arnold or Sly are the best action heros but watching Ford in this one might just change your mind. Also, this is the best, IMO, TV to film transformation of the last 15 years. This might spark some debate, I'm sure, but watch how this captures the entire run of the classic show in one film. It will keep you guessing)
*#33 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills

5. ROSEMARY'S BABY- $4.82
(From Eberts 5-star review: "The best thing that can be said about the film, I think, is that it works. Polanski has taken a most difficult situation and made it believable, right up to the end. In this sense, he even outdoes Hitchcock." Outdoes Hitchcock! Bold statement, yes, but one viewing at the slow, spooky build and huge pay off as you spiral into madness will show that it Polanski doesn't outdo Hitch at least, with this film, he deserves to stand by his side)
*#9 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills
*#224 on IMDB's top 250
*#10 on EW's 10 scariest films of all time

6. THIS IS SPINAL TAP- - $7.66
(Man, where to begin! This is still one of the best mockumentaries out there [somebody posted Zelig already which is another great one]! Everything clicks and the laughter flows like a metal guitar lick! Watch for all the cameos. The best part of this DVD is that it delivers the goods in extras: A commentary buy the cast IN CHARACTER!, Tap music videos and more! To steal the tagline: "Does for rock and roll what "The Sound of Music" did for hills!")
*#29 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Laughs

7. Wes Craven's New Nightmare - $5.40
(You have the first Elm street (as well as a few others including the continuation of Nancy's story in Part 3). This one, though, is the second best flick in the series. It fits in perfectly after watching part 1 and 3 to follow Nancy's story. More so, it is pretty inovative in it's writing style for a horror flick melding in multipul worlds, dreams and viewpoints to keep you guessing.)

Thanks, I have update my selection

Brent L 11-12-06 02:01 PM

Here is my list. All prices are after the discount:

Oldboy - 3-Disc Special Edition Tin Box Set - $20.82

In my opinion, Oldboy is one of the select few gems of this decade so far (it is a Korean film), and this box set is not only packed with all sorts of awesome extras, but the packaging is fantastic also. Check out this thread for more information.

LolliLove - $11.86

Check here to check out the DVDTalk review (DVD Talk Collector Series). This un-PC mockumentary stars James Gunn (writer/director of Slither) and Jenna Fischer (Pam from The Office) playing themselves. The duo also wrote the script for this one, and Jenna directed.

Inside The Actors Studio: Dave Chappelle - $7.17

Well, you have the first and second season of the Chappelle Show, so you seem to like his material. Why not sit down for almost two hours of in depth discussion with him with James Lipton leading the way? Click here for the DVDTalk review (Highly Recommended).

Before Sunrise - $7.91

Well, you own Before Sunset, but why not Before Sunrise. In my opinion, it's a must to own both of these films.

Final Total = $47.76

masbrad 11-12-06 02:26 PM

I will give it a shot.....I had a couple that equaled 51.26 so had to change one of my big sets to smaller items but overall a decent list of quality films I dont see on your list

SLING BLADE CE 7.55--Billy Bob Thornton writer, director , and main actor is outstanding in this movie
BLUE VELVET SE 7.66--David Lynch's very slick thriller with Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern, and of course Dennis Hopper and his Pabst Blue Ribbon!
FARGO SE 7.66--offbeat oustanding cop movie from Coen brothers with great characters from William Macy, Steve Buscemi, and of course the oscar winning role from Frances McDormand. A fabulous dark and very funny movie
MULHOLLAND DR 7.54--another stunning film by David Lynch featuring a very young and sexy Naomi Watts
BORN ON 4th OF JULY SE 4.84--an oustanding movie depicting one mans inner battle with disability set on the bak drop of the Vietnam War a poignant film by Oliver Stone.
BOXER DTS 4.84--often overlooked film by one of the great actors of our time Daniel Day Lewis playing an embattled ex IRA operative who has to cope with coming out of prison and finding his way in a turbulent, troubling time.
SPIDER 4.78--David Cronenberg brings another disturbed thought provoking movie to the big screen this one featuring Ralph Fiennes.
THE COOLER 4.94-- William Macy at it again with another unusual fun character this time as a gambling loveable loser you cant help pulling for.

My small list of dvd's I think you should own (prices after the 20% off discount of course):

Ace Ventura Deluxe Double Feature - $10.60 Ace in anamorphic widescreen! I saw you had some Jim Carrey titles, but noticed you didn't have either of the Ace Ventura movies. Ace Ventura, Ace Ventura 2, and another dvd with a few cartoons on it for $10.60, you can't beat it.

Hard Candy - $13.87 Just saw this movie a week ago, and loved it. Thought it really pushed some boundaries, and is worth all $14.

Undeclared Complete Series - $23.92 Noticed you had Freaks and Geeks, but not this. From the same producer of Freaks and Geeks, also starring Seth Rogan, and lots of cameos. Another one of the FOX shows that got cancelled way before it should have been.

Total - $48.39 and worth every penny. :)

You got it. I was happy to see you still own all but one of the dvds i suggested in Contest Voiting: From the $50 DDD contest for my collection.

I was going to pick the HD-DVD for The Dirty Dozen, but they don't seem to have it listed anywhere. Since the standard disc is close to 20 bucks i'm gonna just hold off and let that go for the next contest.

Serpico +6.03 (your a bit light in both the Pacino and Crime categories. This is one of his best at a bang up price)

Marathon Man +6.03 (you like Straw Dogs, your going to love this. Its the kind of sci fi, paranoia movie that you tend to like)

Dune HD-DVD +22.83 (You need some stuff for that HD player, and I think this is right up your alley.)

Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm (Keepcase) +5.40 (I see your a fan as you have the movie box set, the Begins HD set, and the Beyond animated movie...this is the best of the animated films, and some would say the best Batman movie ever)

Day Of The Dead 2 Disc Divimax +14.99 (You have the Uber 4 Disc Dawn set and the remake, so you really NEED this movie)

DANGER-DIABOLIK +6.03 (anyone who likes comic book movies, ninjas, james bond, heist movies, and owns a color tv should own this movie. Its a true rare gem that isn't talked about enough.)

6 films
total: 61.31
-20%: 49.05

I tried to hit some great catalog titles, to spread the movies out. new releases are great, but as we all know they will tank in price in the future. The only real splurge was Dune, and with an HD-DVD collection, I felt the need to grow that for you a bit. Dirty Dozen was my top pick as stated, but its not listed, and you already have the 2 disc Casablanca so that will hold. Day of the Dead is also a bit high, but it has a single disc version that is replacing it, and anyone who has the 4 disc dawn need the 2 disc day.

total $47.24

Here's a few of my favorites and based on your collection we seem to have very similiar tastes so I think you'll enjoy all of them as much as I did.

1. High Tension-My first french horror flick I've seen. The first 5 minutes of the film is pretty disturbing and you'll either love the rest of the flick or shut it off.

2. Dumb & Dumber- I think Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels' portrayal of 2 lovable dimwits couldn't have been done any better. This movie never ceases to make me laugh as the slap stick comedy is perfect for when your needing a good laugh...."We've landed on the moon people!"

3. Triumph-This is in my top 5 of funniest dvd's I own out of the 800 I have. It never fails to make people laugh their ass off, no matter how many times you've seen it.

4. Stir Of Echoes-I think this is a very underated film. A great psychological horror that has it's creepy moments. Since you have movies like Primal Fear, Memento, I think you'll love this.

5. The Wedding Singer-This movie made me have the hots for Drew barrymore and I think it's one of adam sandler's top 5 best movies. (not to mention it's a great chick flick and you'll espcially love it if you grew up in the 80's.)

6. 44 Minutes-Another gem that I found while looking for obscure movies. This is the recreation of the LA bank robbery that went seriously wrong from both the cops and robbers point of view. This incident prompted the LAPD to start carrying semi-automatic guns instead of just shotguns in their vehicles to counter the assault rifles that criminals were carrying. It's a very edge of your seat drama and you almost forget this incident actually occurred until you watch the very end.

7. Frailty- This is in my top 10 movies of all time. It's a "thinking" type of movie that makes you questions your beliefs. At least it made me and it still does when I hear about similiar type of situations.

8. Best Of The Best- A great popcorny martial arts flick. This centers on the rivarly between the U.S. underdogs and South Korean powerhouse during the olympics in karate competitions. The story line sounds lame but I thought this had one of the best, emotional endings in a movie. (I dare you not to have a tear in your eye at the end :o) )

This was tough, I wanted to add another movie, but I had to even put in the 'normal' Singing in the Rain vs. the SE - had to keep it under $50

There is a theme here - it's about life and where we fit within it - and these 4 movies represent a 60's western asian flick, an anime cry fest, a musical comedy, and a drama
and in some sense they all say the same thing.

mijorico 11-13-06 12:36 AM

Okay, here's my submission:

Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Bueller Bueller Edition (80s classic, surprise you don't have it already) $ 7.55
The King of Comedy (Another DeNiro/Scorsese pairing) $ 5.74
Go (Hip, Pulp Fiction-style ensemble piece from the director of Swingers) $ 4.84
Dogfight (One of River Phoenix's best roles, and a sweet little gem)$ 7.18
Undeclared - Complete Series (Short-lived Fox sitcom with lots of laughs) $ 23.92

You've got comedy, romance, drama, action, and a TV series from the same people who brought you Freaks and Geeks. Can't beat that.

kovacs01 11-13-06 12:46 AM

I'm going for a large variety, and looking for overlooked or underappreciated films that I feel would enrich your collection. Whether I win or not, they are definitely titles worth checking out :-)

THE GREAT SILENCE -- Superb spaghetti western from Corbucci. There aren't many in the genre that can stand next to Leone's work. This one, with a stunning performance from Klaus Kinski, can. Worth owning for anyone interested in westerns, or just great film. Sadly, few have heard of it, and even fewer have seen it. $11.98

MUSA -- I liked it better than some of the other Asian period epics. Solid story, with enough action to keep it interesting, and stunning visuals. If you enjoyed HOFD, chances are youd enjoy this as well. $10.53

THE KILLING -- Early Kubrick crime noir. Super tight plot and great performance by Sterling Hayden put this right in there with the other Kubrick greats. The fact that it was made before he made a name for himself means this movie often does not get the attention it deserves. $6.91

THE TUNNEL -- The true story of one of the early attempts to escape from East Berlin. Does a wonderful job of illustrating the fear, determination, and frustration that prevailed when the wall went up. $14.98

DARK CITY -- One of the best, and most overlooked sci-fi films of the past decade. Relies on plot and atmosphere more than special effects. Proyas at his best. $4.32

TOTAL -- $48.72

GHOST WORLD $ 9.58 / $ 7.66
(If you like AMERICAN SPLENDOR this is in that vein.)

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Season 3 $18.21 / $14.57
(I don't think this is as side-splitting as the previous seasons, but that's still funnier than anything I've seen on TV in a while. And since you've already got S1 & S2, may as well go all the way to where the development's arrested.)

BABE or BABE: PIG IN THE CITY $9.35 / $7.48
(I'm truly recommending the first because it's a deceptively good movie (which along with IRON GIANT ranks among my favorite adult-friendly "kid" movies). On the other hand, if you've seen it and didn't like it, I'd give the sequel a viewing. It's darker and thusly under-rated but I feel just as good. )

LADYKILLERS $8.99 / $ 7.19
(I see you have the remake, KIND HEARTS & CORONETS and OCEANS 11 and this’d fit in nicely. It’s much more low-key than the remake, but I think it has a stronger tone and pace.)

DARK CITY $ 5.40 / $ 4.32
(Besides being a solid movie with two good commentaries, this would fit neatly both in your Sci Fi Utopia/Dystopia and Noir folders.)

ZELIG $ 9.58 / $ 7.66
(I didn’t see any Woody Allen in your collection and I’m guessing that’s intentional [in which case I’m screwin’ the pooch!]. That said, this came to mind when thinking about your documentaries and FORREST GUMP, which gets some of its moves out of this film’s playbook. It’s a wry comedy and one which I’ve found is one of the Woody Allen films people who don’t like Woody Allen still like.)

GHOST WORLD....$ 9.58 / $ 7.66
AD Season 3.......$18.21 / $14.57
BABE.................$ 9.35 / $ 7.48
LADYKILLERS......$ 8.99 / $ 7.19
DARK CITY..........$ 5.40 / $ 4.32
ZELIG................$ 9.58 / $ 7.66

============$60.39 / $48.88

I'm tempted to recommend upgrading MEMENTO, but then I ask myself how often I've played that vs. my old edition just to avoid all the silly codes. I’m also tempted to recommend BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, the original TV pilot from the 70s just for comparison to the new series, which I see you have. But I’d Netflix it instead.

I completely revised my list once you told me you had a certain title. I decided to go with theme: an epic movie list that crosses many years of a man's life from boyhood to manhood, (three men for Blood In) but are all enthralling, humorous, heartbreaking, and inspiring. I tried to cover a variety of time periods...the early 1300's, the 1700's, the Wild West 1800's, and the 1980's/1990's. Pretty good, huh?

Looking at your list, you like epic tales but are missing all of these must-owns.

Joe Canadian: I already have Once Upon a Time in the West.

Iron Waffle/Phatboy: I have Iron Giant under Animation.

Darthvong: I have Blues Brothers: 25th anniversary ed.

You can all edit those if you want to.
