Now that it's out on DVD, can anybody who owns it tell me if the movie is better for the 25 minutes of additional footage? cheers.

Yep, I noticed that. He might get more replies in the International DVD sub-forum(when was it released in the other regions?). I'm also interested in the additional footage, so I'll make sure to monitor this thread.

I ordered the R3 from CD Wow and they're having one of their frequent delays with the title. They hope to have stock in by 10/16. I'm looking forward to seeing the EE as I'm one of the few who actually liked the film in the theater.

This is another case of Studio trying to double dip the US, while giving the international customers the complete version first. Recently, X-Men 3 is doing this.

I don't know why US studios are trying to milk every cents from the US customers by holding the extras for future releases while international studios are giving their customers everything they have. Do they think US customers have money growing on trees to just spend it on every version they release?

For me, I really wanted the Gift set, but I am going to wait and just rent it or try to get the international version. (This is when region free DVD player comes in handy)Besides, other countries usually have better packagings anyway.
Or if I just wait long enough, my interest in this film will be diminished enough for me to just save my money. Either way, I am not getting the R1 release now and really hope US studios would stop doing this. And I didn't get the X-Men 3 either.

Nope, its just the regular DVD packaged with a collectible cryptex and a Robert Langdon Journal. The Region 1 extended edition will most likely come out later, just hasnt been confirmed for the Region 1.

I thought it was better with the 25 minutes. My copy just arrived today infact. They added a lot more footage and backstory to the Silas character, which I liked very much.

Not an extended edition, but other regions are getting a 2-disc Special Edition DVD of the film right away, with a whole second disc's worth of extras.

It's not ever guaranteed that the extras or extended edition of a foreign DVD will ever end up in an R1 release however. It took 7 years for the Director's Cut of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels to be released in R1, and it still has less features than an SE of the film released in R2 a year ago.

Fox is notorious for this. They put out a practically bare-bones release in the States, a 2-disc set overseas, and then (after 6 months or so) an identical 2-disc set in the US.

I've avoided the X-Men Last Stand disc for this very reason. (And, a bit of a vain hope that Fox will embrace HD DVD and put it out properly.)

Except we're getting extra screwed on the 2-disc FANTASTIC FOUR, which is being held out even longer to coincide with next summer's sequel.

Um, because the average U.S. consumer is an idiot? It obviously works to some degree or else they wouldn't continue to do it. A lesser/basic version of any summer blockbuster is definitely going to move at your local Wal-Mart. If one of those buyers sees the film for the first time and enjoys it, then they may shell out more money for the SE when they see it on a subsequent Wal-Mart trip. Face it - Americans in general are not the brightest consumers (see also ThighMaster, Ginsu Knives, anything made by Ronco/Ron Popeil).

In terms of this movie, I can't see how 25 additional minutes would make this a better film. It was pretty much a boring and uninspired treatment of a complexly interesting, page-turning thriller.

I'll agree with you in part that yeah, the average consumer who doesn't frequent DVD forums won't know about upcoming special editions and will just grab whatever copy they see on the shelf.

But I disagree with the notion that consumers in England, Italy, or Australia are so discerning that the studios will always release the super-deluxe edition as the first and only release in those countries.

I would guess that the reason the U.S. (and because of proximity, Canada) get the double-dip treatment is because the market is so large. A combined population of 330 million English-speaking (for the most part) people, a lot of whom watch DVD movies. Sell a few million copies of The Da Vinci code normal version, then sell a few million more a year later.

By comparison, populations of 50 million in the UK or 60 million in France aren't big enough to the studios to release multiple editions. If all of Europe spoke one language, I guarantee they'd be drowning in double dips like us but the costs involved in creating language tracks and localized packaging in German, Italian, Spanish, French, Greek, Czech, Polish, etc. etc. is too much. Just my opinion.

That's true, but there's a difference between a small British movie having a better release in Britain than America and a huge American-studio film. 'Lock, Stock' was always shooting for a much smaller audience (in this country at least).

I was just using that as an example. Lilo and Stitch has had a 2-disc SE release in Australia for years while the R1 release keeps getting delayed. Likewise, Predator had a 2-disc in other regions for years before it was released in R1. Serenity has had a 2-disc SE released in other regions with no word of a US re-release.

If you go to DVDcompare.net, there's literally over 1500 titles where a foreign release is the best edition available for the title, whether because of extras or audio options or longer, different cuts of the film:

Some are recent high-profile films like The Aviator, Brokeback Mountain, and the Titanic SE.

Granted, with a film like The Da Vinci Code, it's a high enough profile release that an eventual DVD release of the extended edition in R1 is likely. It's not, however, guaranteed.

A good argument in theory. However, it falls apart in practice as many titles, like Man on Fire, Ice Age 2, and I, Robot do get multiple editions in the UK and other places in Europe. The difference is, they usually get the 2-disc release simultaneously.

I'd sure buy it on dvd. If they want to make money they'll put an EE on dvd since it is still the biggest seller.

I had the same question and was actually quite, quite annoyed to see that they'll try to force people to buy a blu-ray to get the extended edition. But thankfully there is an R2 release that is on DVD and released in Germany, available through Amazon.de.

This is the first DVD I've really noticed not available from UK's Amazon and from the States. I was not exactly a fan of the movie, but it's part of my dvd collection and I'm a sucker for everything extended or director's cut.
