Maniac Cop!!!!!!!! YAAAAY!

Finally, looks like Synapse is releasing this bad boy. I was always upset that I missed the Elite version. Here are the specs via Bloody-disgusting.com via Fangoria.:

Synapse Films gave Fangoria a peek at the cover art and the full disc specs for its new edition of MANIAC COP, William Lustig’s original 1988 chiller starring Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins as a young police officer and a lieutenant who take on a superhuman killer (Robert Z’Dar) garbed in the blue uniform.

The disc sports a new 16x9-enhanced high-definition 1.85:1 transfer remastered from old vault materials, with new DTS 6.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio tracks along with the original 2.0 Surround sound. Supplements include:

• Audio commentary by Campbell, producer/writer Larry Cohen and others
• New featurette with Z’Dar
• Additional scenes filmed for Japanese TV broadcast
• Theatrical trailer
• TV spots

“Other surprises” are also promised, and the disc will retail for $24.95.

Considering I only have the pan & scan release from a couple of years back, I'm all over this release. Too bad there's not even a hint of when we might expect it in that article.

Good news. I have the Elite one and if memory serves me correct it's on par with a bad VHS copy.

Yeah, I may rent this just to hear the commentary. But I personally don't like the movie.

I picked up one of the old oop (I believe) copies. I haven't watched it yet. I'll most-likely end up picking this up, though.

Interesting flick. I rented this through Netflix, and watched it really late at night. It was a perfect time for that movie.

I might pick this up, if I can find it for a decent price.

From dvdactive.com:

Title: Maniac Cop: Special Edition (IMDb)
Starring: Bruce Campbell
Released: 14th November 2006
SRP: $24.95

Further Details:
Synapse Films has sent over details on Maniac Cop: Special Edition, which will be available to own on the 14th of November at a retail price of $24.95. When innocent people are brutally killed on the streets of New York by a uniformed police officer, a young cop, Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell), finds himself marked as the chief suspect after his wife is murdered. As Lieutenant Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) investigates these mysterious killings, the death toll rises and he suspects a mysterious police cover-up. This “maniac” cop must be stopped, but it might not be so easy! He isn’t an ordinary man. He’s inhuman...driven by supernatural forces...and ready to take on the entire police force, hell-bent on revenge!

Any DVD that includes Bruce Campbell on a commentary track = instant win

I wouldn't mind buying this one if the price is right.

Although William Lustig made this movie, its strange he's not having it released on his own Blue Underground label.... either way....

Putting this on my list as well. They should give Bruce some kind of Honorary Oscar. Almost everything he does is referred to as Cult Classic. Well, almost .....

That's New York Ripper...unless there's another movie that has that.

OK, I remember seeing a scene like that when I was younger and I remember the word Maniac in the title for some reason.

wow, nice to see Maniac cop getting some love on the board. Didn't Lustig direct Maniac as well? That is far more likely to feature the razor eyeball scene.

I've rented the Elite version and thought it was pretty good. Still, I'm drooling over the thought of this remastered release. Too bad they couldn't get it out before Halloween, though!

Definitely not more gore. As I recall from the Elite version, they were more along the lines of time filler. They were mostly additional dialog scenes that were filmed later and inserted in the film.

It seems there was also some Japanese broadcasting rule like "you can't depict the murder of a policeman" (that's not the actual rule, just a hypothetical example), so the dialogue creates some minor plot point to get around that. They explained it in the commentary. I'll have to dig out my copy and find out exactly what it was.

yes, yes he did.

I thought I remember reading the film did lose a little extreme gore to get its R-rating from Fangoria at the time of it's theatrical release
