We've all seen old, faded prints with poor subtitling that's hard to see. Some of the crappier DVD releases by the likes of Fox Lorber, New Yorker, etc., sometimes transferred such faded prints with such faded, burned-in subtitles to DVD. And this was of course very common back in VHS days, before the time of DVD player generated subs. But any decent DVD release with player generated subs in white with the slight black edge (you know, like every frickin' DVD save such "yellow sub" holdouts like MGM and Sony) are easily, easily legible.
Yellow subs are abominable, and do nothing more than "fix" a problem that doesn't even exist anymore.
