Superman Returns dvd finally announced.....

You can see the cover artwork here and a few details. A single disc and two disc special edition will be available. Count me in as getting the 2 disc.

Damed 09-13-06 12:09 PM

Oh yes. 2 Disc-er for me.

canaryfarmer 09-13-06 12:09 PM

Those covers look like stills from a "Max Fischer Players" production of Superman. What's up with the WB giving up on using the poster art?

paulringodaman 09-13-06 12:14 PM

I hate these 1 and 2 disk editions

will not buy!!

???? So you'd prefer them to release the 1 disk now, and double dip in 6 months for the 2 disc?

bboisvert 09-13-06 12:17 PM

A 3-hour! documentary? Oh, crap... bring on the HD DVD announcement!

It better be coming out on HD-DVD day-and-date. With much better coverart I hope.

fumanstan 09-13-06 12:22 PM

Ugly covers... I think i'll pick up the single disc even though the film was a dissapointment. I'd like to rewatch it.

I agree, they look "in your face" and hideous if you ask me.

Paul Arnette 09-13-06 12:25 PM

Dude! This is what the cover is supposed to look like...

Not the Photoshop, masturbatorial exercises linked above.

I love that poster art so much, I almost like it more than the movie.

DAMN YOU, WB! :brickwl2:

bboisvert 09-13-06 12:27 PM

I find the placement of Florida in that poster to be a bit... suggestive. :)

j/k. Yes, the DVD covers suck. I don't know what is up w/WB and covers lately. They should be completely embarrassed by what they did with the Chris Reeve movie covers. Yikes.

Cameron 09-13-06 12:30 PM

more than likely, we'll see an exclusive cover at one of the big box stores, not to mention that if this thing ends up in the big box, then it won't matter to many

Giles 09-13-06 12:33 PM

j/k.

I never noticed that...

the cover for the HD-DVD edition of Superman: The Motion Picture is the best of bunch IMO.

That's fan-made. :(

Geofferson 09-13-06 12:45 PM

Count me in for the 2-disc edition though disappointed I am in that cover (poster art would have been much better).

Is there any hope that the 'Return to Krypton' sequence will be included as one of the deleted scenes? I know Singer denied it a short while ago, but hopefully he's had a change of heart.

jmj713 09-13-06 12:50 PM

Where's the 14-disc set?

I'm sure the 13 disc set will be announced soon enough. Maybe even this week. Maybe even today.

Drexl 09-13-06 01:11 PM

I just knew before I checked the link that there would be no commentary (after all, they have to keep features off the single disc so that if you want any extras at all you have to buy the 2-disc version). The HD-DVD will likely have IME though, so maybe there will be something like a commentary on that version.

Son_Of_Zod 09-13-06 01:19 PM

Unless it is two and a half hours of Singer apologizing, I don't need a commentary on this.

Giles 09-13-06 01:21 PM

 ... ouch.

The Valeyard 09-13-06 01:26 PM

Damn, those covers suck but I'll pick up the 2-Disc version if the 13-Disc Uber set never materializes.

3 Hour documentary? Will the Blue Tights webisodes be a part of it?

canaryfarmer 09-13-06 01:27 PM

Ick. The Supergirl artwork is pretty bad, too.

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/supergirl2.html

Seriously, how did the WB manage to screw up every cover for these movies? They're all so cheap looking.

DJariya 09-13-06 01:35 PM

Has Warner given up on adding commentary tracks? V for Vendetta didn't have one, Batman Begins had none, Poseidon and Troy didn't have ones either.

I thought Bryan Singer was going to record one for this movie and you would think he would have lots to say since this movie was his pet project for the last 3 or 4 years.

dvd_luver 09-13-06 01:39 PM

That artwork for the 2-disc release is laughable at best, when they could have used the wonderful artwork for the theatrical poster for the 2-disc set, with a lenticular cover/comic book, or any other theatrical poster used during the marketing of the film. Instead they go with that, after all those nice theatrical posters, figures.

honestjohn 09-13-06 01:42 PM

Probably going to pickup the 2 disc version myself, not that I really loved the movie, the cost difference probably won't be significant.

Regarding the coverart, they definitely need some new graphic design people. It would have been so easy to use the original Poster Design. I did this myself with minimum effort. Yes I know it's amateurish, but I'm just proving the point....

dvd_luver 09-13-06 01:48 PM

honestjohn, yeah, that is the one that is really cool. Nice job! and you proved your point, I already like it better than Warner's laughable 2-disc SE artwork. That is just so awesome to not use on a 2-disc SE. What gives?

Big Worms 09-13-06 01:51 PM

Have to agree, ugly covers.

Either way I am waiting for the HD version.

Thanks and I agree. When I did this I found the Poster dimensions were almost exactly the same size as the front of a DVD Cover case when scaled down. That's how easy it would have been for them to do. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of their Package Design Meetings, if they actually have one.

bluetoast 09-13-06 02:30 PM

When I think of WB and bad covers, Matrix Revolutions is the first thing that comes to mind.

Some of those might be situations where WB wants to double-dip in a few years when the inevitable sequels hit theaters. At least in the case of Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Fortunately Batman Begins will have the IME feature on the HD-DVD release.

Mr. Cinema 09-13-06 03:05 PM

3 hour documentary....niiiiice

I normally don't care what the cover looks like, but I do wished they had used the theatrical one-sheet.

stingermck 09-13-06 03:05 PM

 I'm over here in the minority corner. The 1 disc cover is F'n awesome. But I'll buy the 2 disc. Supergirl looks very similar to the current 1 disc from Anchor Bay. BTW any word on what cut supergirl will be?

beene1000 09-13-06 03:42 PM

I expect, as mentioned earlier, that will see some bonus stuff for this one from major stores the first week. Target will probably run a lenticular cover of the poster art for this one the way they did for early Warner releases like V for Vendetta and Harry Potter. I expect BB will do sometype of special thing like they did for the documentary released this summer. The covers are ok, but they could be a lot better.

ianholm 09-13-06 03:59 PM

One discer will be fine for me.

According to the insider on avsforums who encoded the Batman Begins disc for hd-dvd, Superman Returns will probably have IME. He said he talked to Bryan Singer's AD about what he could do with it. We'll see what happens!!

Im hoping its day/date with hd-dvd, otherwise, ill wait.

BTW - I also like the poster for the coverart instead. I have that poster framed in my office along with some others. Its awesome. Or, they should have even used the one where it just shows the superman symbol.

Oh well, the studios rarely get coverart right. They do it for marketing and not for what looks good.

Im waiting for some of those great cover artists to start doing hd-dvd covers!

Ranger 09-13-06 04:10 PM

wow, those are really bad covers. almost makes me want to just say f it and make my own to put on the dvd case.
