^ What? They actually shot something like that?

GuessWho 05-03-07 10:14 AM

from wikipedia

The original ending for the film included a scene in which
Spoiler:
Josh is in class, and a "new girl in school" is brought into the classroom. Her resemblance to Susan and a shot of Josh's reaction imply that this is Susan, having also become young. The scene was cut after poor response in test screenings.

There's a review of both this and That Thing You Do Extended Cuts over at dvdmg.com. This one adds about 25 minutes to the running time bringing it to about 130 minutes. The reviewer liked some of the new additions to the cut, but felt a lot of the scenes kind of threw off the pacing and a lot were simply redundant.

According to the review, the DVD also omits a Penny Marshall commentary (though it's listed on the DVD) and the deleted scenes on DVD two are only some of the scenes added to the extended cut and not more deleted scenes. Apparently the alternate ending as mentioned above is not on the disc. Still he thinks it's a solid release well worth pick up even if you have the old disc.

Rammsteinfan 05-03-07 11:14 AM

The back cover doesnt appear to show a commentary anymore...

I heard about the "original ending" too - where:

Spoiler:
It is implied that the girl who came into class is Susan - as she found a Zoltar machine, and wished that she was Josh's age. I think thats rather sweet :)

Actually, on the item description, it states "including an audio commentary by director Penny Marshall."

I remember he said he got small royalty checks for his likeness appearing on the video covers, I wonder if he'll get twice as much now? :)

Wierd. There's a few repeated kids on the back.

I just checked the back of the boxes and the original Money Pit release was already 1:85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. The only difference I could find was the original Dragnet was 1:77:1 Anamorphic Widescreen and the Collection version is 1:85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Am I missing something? There was no reason to upgrade on these releases correct?

Unbelievable.

:mad2:

tylergfoster 05-06-07 03:46 AM

I am still looking forward to this, but hearing the alternate ending is missing (it sounds nice) and that the DVD is mis-advertising the commentary has brought me down a little (although I have to admit, no commentary was never listed in the press stuff...I wonder why it says it on the DVD back cover).

captainjoe 05-06-07 09:39 AM

I wonder how much better the new anamorphic transfer is?

riotinmyskull 05-08-07 01:58 PM

did anyone pick this up today and if so how much did they pay and where'd they get it?

noahtc 05-08-07 03:30 PM

14.99 at wal-mart. By the way did anyone who picked this up today have the security tape stick to the case and not peel off all the way?

Altimus Prime 05-08-07 03:37 PM

So, at the end of the movie, you have a 13 year old kid, who has already had sex. Damn, talk about not having a big thing to look forward to anymore. Or, now he has to wait to have something he already had.

Makes me wonder about a sequel. What would happen when he reached a natural age of 30? He already was that age. How would that experience affect his life in between. Would he still go through the stages and whatnot of his mid teens, late teens, early 20s? He skipped over all of that straight to full adulthood.

And upon turning 18 or 21, would he reunite with Susan???

tylergfoster 05-09-07 02:26 PM

Is this DVD any good then? Any reviews of the new cut and the bonus features?

Haven't watched it yet but it comes with a fairly detailed insert on the making of the movie.

Rammsteinfan 05-09-07 05:35 PM

I watched the new version last night and really liked it. I dont remember the f bomb in there but guess it was there all along. Still a classic movie.

One piece left a little residue but otherwise it was pretty normal. I did notice in the Home Theater Forum review the mention of some issues with the security sticker so I don't think you're alone.

DarthMarino 05-10-07 12:05 AM

I really liked the extended cut. Nothing really stuck out as being out of place. While the overall feel of it does seem a bit longer than it should be, there are some really great moments that just seem like they would have been in the movie. Some of the highlights included the entire comic book stand scene, Josh's call home to get advice for a stomach ache and Josh's Mom showing Billy the birthday gift she got. I'm glad this finally came out.

zekeburger1979 05-10-07 12:32 AM

I saw that the theatrical cut and director's cut is included on this. It's only $9.99 at Costco and I'm picking up a copy tomorrow! I was going to get the old one, but I never could find the widescreen version, only the foolscreen version.

OK, my mistake then. I was holding off getting the Money Pit because I read somewhere that the original release was non-ananmorphic. Sorry.

As far as the new "Big" DC/EE release. Had a helluva time finding it. Wasn't at the local Walmart and Best Buy didn't have it out yesterday. Had to return something today and found it buried in the comedy section and they didn't even have it with the new releases.
