Duck Soup Question

Was the Marx Brothers' film, "Duck Soup," ever released on DVD in Region 1?

I'm thinking about ordering it off of Ebay, because I'm attempting to watch all of the American Film Institute's "100 Best Films of All-Time," and this is one of them. I doubt I'd ever be able to rent it anywhere, so I'll just order it. I just want to get an authentic release, if I can.

You could rent it from Netflix, buy it from Amazon, it's included in the marx bros boxset @ DDD, or try your local library. Good luck.

The only region 1 Duck Soup that's in print right now is the one in the MarxBros. collection. It has 5 films and can be found for around $40 - it looks like this:

The only legit Duck Soup is out of print, but wasn't too good of a dvd anyways. Looks like this:

If you pay anthing more than $10 for Duck Soup alone, you'd be better off getting the collection.

The Silver Screen Collection is also OOP. Has been for a while.

Is the new one that much better? I was under the impression they didn't clean up the transfers for the new boxes (though I know this hurts 'Horse Feathers' more than any other).

I'm not so sure, as Amazon still has it (and I don't mean amazon marketplace), as do a few other online and B&M stores.

And the collection has slightly cleaned up transfers.
See for yourself:

Thanks for the pictures. I've seen the second one on Ebay and it has a gold-ish banner on the top. Is that the same one?

The new ones look a little better than the original releases.

I don't think it should have that banner, but I'm not so sure.

The French one looks like this:

I have the second OOP one in my collection...and there is no banner on the top of it. Like the previous poster suggested...it could be an international edition.

The second one (original OOP release from like '98) I believe was also released in Brazil, that might be what you're seeing. I used to own it but sold it when the Silver Screen box came out, definately noticed it was an improved picture. Unless you have no desire for the other 4 pictures included in the box, I'd definately recommend springing for it (Animal Crackers has actually always been my favorite)

I'd recommend springing for the boxset, too. Although DUCK SOUP is my favorite Marx Brothers film, I've found through experience that HORSEFEATHERS is a better introduction to the Brothers for people unfamiliar with their work. Chances are very good that if you start with HORSEFEATHERS or DUCK SOUP, you will want to see everything they've done (IMHO).
