Question about X-Files Slim Sets

I was just trying to confirm that the slim season sets of the X-Files are in fact missing bonus features that were available in the thicker, fold-out season sets. I've heard conflicting reports, with some people saying they dropped the bonus disc and all those features are missing, while others have said that they dropped the bonus disc but took the content from it and placed it among the episode discs. I'm just trying to figure out which is correct, because if the fold-out sets have more features, I'm going to pick those up. If not, I'll be going with the slim sets. Thanks!

The bonus content(extra scenes, etc.) that were on the first six discs in the original releases is on the re-release. The other bonus content that was on a seventh disc in the original release is not in the re-release.

Now, I believe some of the later seasons that originally had only a six disc release, those re-releases have all the bonus content.

I think I got it right.

Okay, thanks. Looks like it's the fold-out ones for me (even the 6-disc ones, just to keep them looking consistent).

Does anyone know why it was released in widescreen from season 5 onwards? I just started watching season 5 and was surprised.

I didn't even realized they released these new slim sets with such a cheap price. Looks like it might finally be my excuse to pick these up now.

Yeah, I was finally able to collect all of these as well. Fox released them 3 seasons at a time over several months and BestBuy would run a sale each time came out, selling them for only $29.99 each if you bought 3 seasons.

And to make it official Slimline Seasons 6,7,8 have all of the Bonus features the more expensive ones have. And all slimline Seasons have the International Clips and Deleted Scenes available for viewing within the context of each episode they appeared in. You can't watch them individually however.

It was originally shot for 1.33:1 until then, but switched to 1.78:1 for future seasons.
Millennium is presented this way as well, but only the first season is 1.33:1.

It's all a bit confusing, but don't worry...you're not getting butchered DVDs.

Just a quick word of advice. I owned all 9 seasons of the more expensive sets at one point. Eventually Ebayed them when I needed some quick cash for something PC related. Anyway, make sure you buy these somewhere with a good return poilcy because the package design sucks for many of the seasons. Many seasons came with discs falling off the center case hubs and major scratching of the discs. You'll notice once you get these, it seems they used a different hub design for almost every season. I don't recall which season was best, but it must hve been an early one because I remember saying to myself, why don't they keep using this design. Discs were held solid as a rock. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.

Does the new season 9 also have the original Bonus Documentary? Well damn, that explains the price drop on the original sets. I already purchased the slim sets of 1-6 and was at best buy when I saw they had dropped the original editions down to $41.99, so I snatched them up. Wasn't sure if it was a temporary thing or what. They're still sealed though, so I may take them back and buy the slim sets to save on space. Even though I like the boxes of the original releases better.

Now what Fox needs to do is release a DVD with all the documentaries we're missing on seasons 1-5. Is the bonus material on the Mythologies sets completely different from the originals? I don't think TV sets are the kind of thing I'll double dip on though.

I had no idea that they were going to be re-releasing the set in smaller digipacks, so I spent a ton of money on the Seasons (well, 3/5-9, as I already had 1, 2 and 4.) I originally paid full price ($113.99 CAD) but a friend alerted me to a sale at Future Shop, where they were $64.99 CAD each. I hadn't opened them, so I took them all back and re-bought them there. I saved $250.

Sorry No, Season 9 is bare aside from integrated Deleted Scenes and International Clips.

Thats a shame because Season 9 has a great 1 hour fly-on-the-wall documentary that covers every aspect of the filming of the series finale.

I think Season 8 has all the extras - at least, comparing my slim set to the review here on DVDTalk, all the extras are listed on the box.

Okay, another season 5 question:

In episode 9 (disc 3, episode 1), "Schizogeny", the word "dorkweed" has been dubbed in place of a clearly-said "dickweed". It's at 5:44 if you want to check.

Was this in the original sets, and has anyone ever noticed this before?

Yes it's in the original sets because that's how the show was originally aired on TV. Don't know who had an issue with it, but yes, it's an obvious dubbing of dickweed. If you Google Schizogeny and dickweed, you'll find several fansites where this has been discussed.

I've got a question. I have the original X-Files sets, thick digipack foldouts. I bought them when slim case sets were released. I've just started watching and found I have an issue with episode 7 in Season 2. Do the reissued slim set disc match the original sets? Also, if I contaced Fox do you think they would send me a replacement disc since it is too late for me to exchange them? Hopefully the discs match and I could just buy the cheap slim set and swap out the faulty disc.

I bought each season as it was released, and for around $90 (times nine), and so I have the original thick digipaks, but I don't regret it. Not only do I have all the extras, the packaging is much much prettier. I love it.

You'd be talking about disc 2. I don't believe you'd have any issues with that one. It should be the same in the slim sets as what you have.

Re: Question about X-Files Slim Sets

Rather than starting a whole new thread, I'll just add this here.

Has anyone else seen the new, even slimer season sets? I was surprised to see these at FYE yesterday. Its just a basic, clear single-width DVD keep case with a cover insert. How they fit 6 disks in there I have no idea.

Yup. Just like that.

If only they had done that with season sets of TV shows from the very beginning, I'd have SO MUCH more shelf space right now.

Re: Question about X-Files Slim Sets

Man I remember paying upwards of $150 for the first four seasons! I eventually traded those first four seasons to a guy for a brand new PS2 in 2001. I then rebought the first four seasons and the next four (season 9 - P! U!) when Best Buy was trying to sell off it's stock of the full sized sets a few years ago.
