why wont they release larry and balki on dvd?! every other damn show is on dvd now...why not PS?

Would like to know this myself. Absolutely love this show--still funny as hell--and I don't know why Warner is taking so long with it. Do they not feel there is enough of a market for it? There was even a "best of" release planned for sometime this year which was scrapped. I don't get it. But then, there are so many shows that have yet to see the light of day on DVD, so this is just one more.

How certain can they be of that? I imagine alot of these are the syndicated versions that played 5 days a week in the early to mid-90s.

Not a thing. But it's just to watch them; I don't think you can save them and make your own DVDs. If you save them to your computer, they exist in AOL's "Content Manager" or something like that.

There was an episode from PS released as part of a bonus disc for one of the Warner TV on DVD sets - I believe it was Nightcourt.

You think so, huh? I saw him on The Surreal Life--only reason I cared for it--and I had no problem with him. I've always dug him. Only time I wasn't so taken was on The Arsenio Hall Show circa 1992. Perfect Strangers had just ended; his new show, The Trouble with Larry, was coming up; and his ego was looming large. He had refused to reprise his role as Serge in Beverly Hills Cop III because they wouldn't pay his price. But then The Trouble with Larry was canceled, and he accepted the role in Cop III.

I'm not trying to put him down or anything. I love the guy. I'm just observing a time when his stardom got the best of him. Like David Caruso in the early days of NYPD Blue. It happens.

From a bunch of amateurs you're gonna get an amateur product at amateur quality. Go ahead and order.

how bad is the quality?

Think about it... what sources do amateurs have? Off-air tapes, VHS or maybe Beta, but that's it. Some shows might be recorded onto hard drives and then transferred to DVD, but only if they've been broadcast in syndication in the past few years. Even then you'll probably end up with chopped up syndication prints with network logos all over them, and if someone hasn't been careful with editing, you could get annyoing little cuts where the commercial starts but then cuts back to the show.

Another issue is the quality of DVD authoring, which in most cases is abysmal. The people who offer TV shows typically use standalone DVD recorders, so when you get the discs in the mail and pop 'em into your DVD player, all you'll see is a plain blue or grey screen full of generic bars that may or may not be labeled with show titles (it could be just one bar with the date and time the DVD was recorded). If you're lucky you might get a menu pieced together from VHS or TV Guide scans along with whatever generic icons come with MyDVDCreator or whatever package the bootleggers could afford (if I see that little house for "main menu" one more time, I'm gonna scream!).

The real fun starts when you get the aforementioned screen full of bars, but when you press "Enter" you can see a split-second of a halfway-decent DVD menu before each show starts. That of course should tip you off that the people you gave your hard-earned money to couldn't even be bothered to create a digital clone of someone else's homemade DVD, they just played it into a STANDALONE recorder using ANALOG connections, thereby compressing already sub-standard content YET AGAIN!!!

I certainly empathize with people who want a certain movie or TV show bad enough to buy a bootleg of it, at least when there's little or no hope it's gonna be released officially. I definitely don't think these people should be rewarded with something they quite literally could have done themselves if they had the source material, but often that's what they get. Being a big fan of DVD menus and packaging, I just can't stand it when I get something that's obviously been burned on a standalone, especially when the lack of control over the bitrate on those things leaves me with 90 minutes squeezed to fit on two-thirds of the disc rather than being able to use the best bitrate possible. As for packaging, if I see another paper label I'm just gonna go postal, and the low-quality covers you often get (if you get a cover at all) make me physically ill.

There really needs to be a few secondary labels, kind of like Anchor Bay and Shout Factory that put out quality product without expecting Seinfeld-sized sales numbers. At the very least, ask whomever you're forced to buy bootlegs from whether they use a standalone DVD burner, and if it's at all important to you, ask to see their cover and label art before you buy. I'd imagine that asking to see a menu or other screen shot will give you the best idea of what you're paying for. I'd also steer clear of bootleggers who refuse to trade, because that's a sure sign that they're only in it for the money and therefore probably don't give a crap about quality.

I've run across a whole bunch of "why the hell did I pay for this???" DVDs in my time, so I'm happy to help anybody avoid that kind of thing in the future.

I was on Wikipedia looking up some stuff on The Wonder Years, and came across this blurb: "A Full Set DVD release has is currently available at [site name and link removed by poster to avoid any forum violations] or see specific link redirect. The full series is complete in chronological order, commercial free provided by a community at a non profit. However, it must be noted that these DVD's are unofficial." (Emphasis mine.)

I went to the site and, sure enough, an obvious bootleg was being peddled. However, there was no mention of being "non profit" as was found in the Wiki entry.

I don't understand how they can sell these.

Also, for a show like The Wonder Years, where a studio will probably never officially release the show because there will probably never be enough demand to warrant securing the rights to all the music, I wouldn't be surprised if this sort of thing crops up more and more.

This is my second favorite show of all time .. next to MST3k. And I too would love to see it released on dvd. Full seasons. None of this "best of" nonsense.

I was so happy about 4 years ago when Nick at Nite started airing the show but it seemed like they only played the first season and then quit.

"Perfect Strangers" was made before DVDs existed, and certainly before it was common to sell TV shows on home video. That almost certainly means deals will have to be reached and royalties will have to be paid to creators, actors, producers, etc., in order for a studio to legally release an older show to DVD.

Bootleggers have next to no costs because they aren't paying anyone anything. Burn a few discs, print some crappy packaging and they're done.
