Escape from L.A. DVD confusion?

Hey guys. I was recently at Best Buy and noticed a new cover for Escape from L.A. The specs on the back of the box look pretty much identical to the older release. Does anyone know if this newer release is Animorphic, or the same old same old as before, just a slicker cover? The box doesn't mention it being 16x9 enhanced, but boxes have been known to be wrong in the past. I posted a pic of both the old and new boxes below. I can't find any info on the "new" release. Thanks to anyone who can help.

OLD

NEW

As far as I know, Paramount is just repackaging older titles with different artwork...everything else remains the same.

There is a rumor of a third movie entitled "Escape from Earth" in the works. Hopefully this boosts them to make a special edition of the second.

And it sucks that it turned out to be just a big rumor. Why do people come up with these cruel rumors and spread them?

Actually, like Jason One I watched this a wek or so ago and it is a really subpar transfer. I got it on the cheap and I was still let down. It is a guilty pleasure and I would like a little better release as well.

Which region do you have that is anamorphic? I started this thread because, like others, this is a guilty pleasure and would love to view a better transfer, no matter what the region. The current R1 is terrible. I think this film is way underrated and deserves more attention than the current embarrassment that is out now. Also, so the conclusion is that both R1 releases are exactly the same minus the cover?
