From the back of the Dark Star box that I got (I can not open it and look at the disk since it is to be a gift), it does say that BOTH are there:

"...full length theatrical release version, painstakingly restored, and re-mixed in Dolby Digital 5.1. Or, view this cult classic in the shorter Special Edition version, presented as originally intended by the filmmakers. Either way, enjoy!"

That is from the back of the case. It also says that it was originally intended to be a 68 minute film, but 15 minutes of extra footage was shot and released theatrically in 1975. In 1983, re-issued as a "Special Edition" with the virtually all the extra footage edited out, although having a technically superior transfer.

P.S. just as a I was putting the it away, I noticed at the top of case on the front it says "Two Versions: Theatrical Release & Special Edition Widescreen Format."

I'd say the most famous one lately is "Napoleon Dynamite". The student film "Peluca" that is the basis for it is a bonus on the Special Edition set. Jared Hess and Jon Heder made it when they were at LSU.

Well, shit. George Washington and Napoleon Dynamite were my answers.

Oh well.

Darkness Falls was based on the short "The Toothfairy".

I heard a rumor that "The Hebrew Hammer" did, but it's not listed on the back of the box and I don't own it.

EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS contains the original short.

Edit: Oh, and DARKNESS FALLS does NOT contain the "Toothfairy". It was famously dropped from the DVD release, angering the filmmaker so much that he made a special offer to fans where he would send them a DVDR of the short for FREE just for asking! A very cool move... :^)

I know none of the releases have it, but I really wish they would...

Evil Dead needs to contain "Within The Woods" on the next release! I have a copy of it, but its a shitty VCD made from a like 20th gen vhs tape....

Yeah, I got the FREE Darkness Falls Toothfairy short. It was better than the real movie...I can see why the studio dropped it (they don't want the short better than the movie )

I think Sling Blade fits this description. I'm not 100% sure that the original short was a student film though.

Edit:

Okay, wrong on both counts: It was not a student film and it's sold separately. I thought I had rented it with both films on the Sling Blade disc.

NEVER MIND

I don't think it was a student film, but the Saw SE has the original short film on it.

Not sure if this technically counts, but on the Hard Eight disc they include a handful of scenes that were worked on in a Sundance film workshop. These were done prior to the filming of the actual movie.

Oh yeah, I tottally forgot about that. I can't believe I own that movie. I met the cast at a convention and just kinda felt obligated. (Plus how can you not like Kari Wuhrer?)
