Another evil and completely pointless plot from Peter Jackson and Sauron. These will not sell.

Those pieces are fantastic, of course, but this is more of a "fly-on-the-wall" piece than anything else. I think it's pretty great.
Can you confirm that the documentary is, in fact, 4:3 letterboxed rather than anamorphic?

That's two strikes against these for me. If they had put the movies over two discs so I could play them in my 5-dics player (with the docs on the flipside of one of them; or heaven forbid, a third disc...), and the docs were 16x9, or just straight 4x3, I might have picked these up.

Ultimately, I can totally understand why fans might want to skip these releases, but I'd have bought 'em sooner or later!
I hate flipper discs because you have to squint to read the title on that little hub around the middle, and because there's no safe side to put the disc down on - it's very hard to keep the damn things clean and scratch-free.

That's what annoys me most about this release. One of the main things they are shouting about is "EACH MOVIE ON ONE DISC FOR THE FIRST TIME!" But since it's on both sides, you still have to get up and change them... it's not really any different from the originals. If anything, the quality is now less because it's a DVD-18 and the disc art is gone.

They look great, but I think I'll be passing.

Well, I felt dumb buying the new "Limited Edition" trilogy just for the sake of the documentaries and being a LOTR completist/fanatic... until I checked the value of the enclosed Sideshow Collectibles giftcard online... and mine was worth $50!

Actually, they didn't have any LOTR swank in that price range that interested me, so I spent mine on a nice POTA Cornelius 12-action-figure to go along with my giant Ceasar head... What a great freebie. No regrets here, I'll tell ya!

Probably gonna pull the trigger on one of the sets during the ddd sale and just wanted to see if anyone has some suggestions either way between the LE set and the EE set. Are the theatricals that great to have? sounds like you have to flip the discs no matter which set you get?, etc.

Any help appreciated.

Having all three sets, if I had to pick one only, I'd go with the EE set...

I must admit I haven't done a comprehensive comparison of the EE extras vs. the LE documentaries. But my initial impression is that the EE extras are more worthy & comprehensive, and I don't have much use for the theatrical cuts having gotten accustomed to the longer ones.

Anyone else: EE vs. LE?

Why have you posted in 2 threads about releases being pulled off the shelves? Is there a recall we missed?

These are limited edition DVD's. I'm just want to know when is the last day they'll be available to purchase.

They will be available as long as store inventory holds out. If you're worried about not getting them just pick them up now. Why wait?
