Although I've said this to myself millions of times, but as I stare at my DVD collection really hard, I constantly ask myself, "Does this movie have any replay value?" Also I'm running out of shelf space, so I have had to pack up some unwatched DVD's and put them in boxes in the garage.
After spending hundreds of dollars every week at Best Buy and Circuit City, I have decided not to go crazy anymore on new release Tuesday. I've realized alot of my ridiculous blind buys were really only enjoyable as rentals. I will only buy movies that I have seen with good bonus features and that have good replay value. No more blind buys. Now, I have more money to put away for vacations and paying for groceries. If I have time, I'll rent something that I have not seen. |
I've actually increased my spending.
I've discovered a few good stores that run great deals in my area, so I end up getting a lot of great old films. And still, a substantial amount of new releases. Man, do I hate buying dvds because of the money factor, but love it for...you know, dvd-factor? :) |
I mainly just buy tv sets now.. I own mostly all the movies i have wanted except for blade runner which is coming soon. Except for that rare good new movie it will probably just be tv sets here on out. Infact i have quite a few that i will be buying in the next few months listed below. I am sure more will be announced in the meantime that i want.
August: 08-01 - Dallas (S5) 08-15 - Remington Steele (S4-S5) 08-22 - House, M.D. (S2) 08-29 - Desperate Housewives (S2) September: 09-05 - Lost (S2) 09-12 - Grey's Anatomy (S2) 09-19 - B. Galactica (2.5), Gilmore Girls (S6), Hart to Hart (S2) 09-26 - Boston Legal (S2), Riptide (S1) October: 10-10 - Magnum, P.I. (S5), Simon & Simon (S1) 10-24 - MacGyver (S7), The OC (S3) |
My buying has declined partly due to having bought all the older movies that I wanted.
I rarely buy any new release movies because they mostly, in my opinion, suck. Especially the last two years. I rarely use all of my 4 blockbuster monthly free movie coupons because few of the new releases interest me enough to even watch for free, much less buy. I too have grown tired of paying full price for a movie and seeing it a few months later for half or less of what I paid for it! Most of my current purchases are for TV shows releases. |
Mine are in big decline, I haven't bought a single disc since April. Realizing that while I'm still in college, my discretionary income is high, but I'm going into my senior year, so I'm working on budgeting myself better, meaning less purchases. I've also increased my hi-res audio (SACD/DVD-A) purchases and those have been very satisfying so I've been sticking with them.

Mine is slowing. I was at a point where I would go grap new releases on release day. Now I find myself waiting for the 4.99 sales etc that you see. I find with this stuff a little patience pays off. Video games are the best example. When Star Wars Battlefront II came out I really wanted it but I made myself wait. Picked it up for the Xbox the other day at Target for $16.00.
So I would say mine are declining. |
At this point, I can honestly say that other than the ongoing Fox Noir series, the WB Noir 3 and Tough Guys box sets, and anticipated double dips on WB titles like Cool Hand Luke, Bonnie and Clyde, Road Warrior and the Kubrick SEs, there are very few dvd titles that I feel the overwhelming need to own. By few, I mean 40 or so. My wish list is at about 200 titles, but many are strictly on the list to satisfy the completist in me. I currently own around 900 films, and, even as an obsessive collector with a rather eclectic taste, I am near the point where I am satisfied with my collection as a whole. Still waiting on Johnny Guitar though.

mine have reduced greatly... the only things i buy nowadays:
disney dvds tv shows everything else... i have sattelite & get them all for free on there... |
Big decline for me. I joined Netflix so that's helped. My main purchases now are mostly TV because of the longevity of watching an entire season.
|
I rarely buy new DVDs anymore since 1. I probably don't have time to watch them right away anyway, 2. there are so many lousy movies coming out, 3. I have so many dvds right now that it's to the point where I realize that the odds of me rewatching anything are slim to none, and 4. I know that if I'm patient, that new movie will be on sale for $10 or less in six month's time.
|
I'm still buying the 10-15 titles a month i always have done, i could buy a lot more if i wanted to but i do try to budget my spending each month and set aside a small bit of my salary as 'disposable income'.
Like others have already expressed, i have absolutely no interest in 'upgrading' to HD/Blu Ray or whatever so will always purchase the standard DVD format for as long as it remains on the market. |
I only get about 6 to 10 DVDs a year now.
|
I guess my dvd purchasing is back up again. I bought 5 box sets and 8 dvds this week alone. :D
|
Like others, I have bought most of the movies I want and now am pursuing TV shows...mostly only if I can get a really good price on them (i.e. I just got House M.D. on a 4th of July sale for $21.99).
There is a new release here and there that I will buy but not a whole lot. Am Also holding out for the big Superman set this fall and the Blade Runner set next year. |
Shelf space is a big factor now in my buying decisions. That and the usual policies of "no blind buys" except under extraordinary circumstances (e.g. Finding Nemo, which I knew there was no way I wouldn't like), buying only OAR movies with replay value, and occasionally pulling movies off the shelf to resell.
