I was slow until the DDD sale.
|
I had a library of about 200+ back in 2002, in which I ebay'd them all down to like 20. These 20 are my most-watched. I can't rememer the last time I actually paid for a standard resolution DVD.
My next DVD purchase will be a high def DVD. |
Yes. I have way too many unwatched DVDs just sitting at home.

I've slowed down overall, but there are still many must have DVDs that haven't come out yet (or have been OOP for a long time, like Double Indemnity) so there's plenty left for me to buy.

yes. A pile of unwatched is a big factor. I've bought maybe 5-6 in the past few months and haven't watched any of them.
On the other hand I can't get enough TV on dvd. That is what I spend most of my time watching, whether it is a favorite show of mine, or a newly discovered favorite. There is always a tv show to watch and with 22 and 44 minute runtimes it is a hell of a lot easier to pop a disc in and watch an episode vs. a 2+ hour movie. |
Nope I'm still on my average of atleast 3-5 a month, but recently its been near 10 the last few months.
|
I have around 600 DVDs (and sets) so I've tried to cut down. With Netflix and the library sending me stuff non-stop I tend to watch those before the movies I actually own.
I mostly buy a few select TV sets now and a few movies here and there. I have most flicks I would want and just have to decide if I want to do the double-dip as many are now proposing. |
My buying habits have slowed considerably over the last year or so. I've been disappointed by too many "blind buys" that didn't live up to my expectations to keep spending $X each week on movies that I haven't seen but I think I might like.
I've reduced my buying to movies that I've seen in the theater and I know I'll re-watch, or something that I feel confident that I'll like. I've stopped buying stuff just because it's new. |
Yep, hardly anything coming out that I'm interested in. Mostly I need a few more TV on DVD sets to catch up on.

Major, major decline here.
I basically went on a micro-binge of R2 stuff when my region-free/PAL-converting Oppo DVD player arrived… but since then, only the occasional TV-on-DVD season set or loss-leader-priced new release stuff. The reasons, I think, are five-fold. 1) I finally came to terms with the massive back-log of stuff on my shelf I have yet to watch. 2) The completist-baiting catalog stuff that appeals to me (Trek and Farscape, Zatoichi flicks, Monty Python, etc.) have, for the most part, been fully released. Heck, in some cases, more than once. 3) I’ve spent a lot of time re-discovering my old 16x9 DVD’s thanks to my front projector. 4) I’ve finally learned to say “no” to double- triple-, and quadruple-dip studio shenanigans. (“Unrated and expanded” have become dirty words to me.) 5) And way, way down the list (’Cuz I firmly believed they’ve screwed the pooch on both formats) is a low-level “wait and see “ anticipation of going to a HD format. |
1) I finally came to terms with the massive back-log of stuff on my shelf I have yet to watch. |
My purchases have definately declined, but only because I'm going through a tough financial stretch. If the $$$ was available, I'd still be getting 3-4 a week.

No sir. My buying patterns are pretty much the same as they've always been. I'm a movie buff and buy them because I love the movies, so the resell value means absolutely nothing to me. Since I rarely go to the theater anymore, I often "blind buy" many new releases since they're usually released within a few months of release. And my blind buying purchase history is pretty spot on with my particular tastes. And finally, I could less about the new formats...at least until they decide upon one format to rule all formats.
|
I've slowed down a bit since I have pretty much all the catalog movies I wanted and I rarely double-dip for extras. Mostly new releases here.
|
I was pretty gung-ho about buying every new release I could get my hands on up until December of last year. I stopped buying in order to save some money towards a car. Once the purchase was made, my dvd shopping habits picked back up but on a much lesser level. Now, I tend to stick to catalog titles that I can get my hands on cheap.

(All of the following is assuming, of course, one of the HD formats catches on.) I don't know the specifics of the situations with the movies you mentioned, but a lot of "lower-tier" movies that took a while to get to DVD required a lot of work to make them presentable. Not all of these apply in every case, of course, but elements had to be found and possibly cleaned, transfers had to be done, special features had to be gathered or created. But now? Virtually everything that's been released for the last few years at least has been suitably prepared for HD. Sure, it took a while for Magic to make it to DVD, but for HD, all it needs is an open spot in the release calendar. Other than that, it's practically plug and play. Anyway, of course I'm not saying everything will be available immediately on an HD format. And when it comes down to it, all else being equal (everything is ready for two given titles), demand will generally dictate which one gets released first. But I don't think the wait for those movies to get to DVD is necessarily indicative of what you can expect if an HD format takes off. In many cases, a major stumbling block has been removed. |
I can't say mine has declined a lot but I have been purchasing more TV on DVD than I ever have. My movie DVD purchasing has curtailed to just the few I feel I must have instead of blind buys like I used to buy a lot of. I exercise the hell out of my netflix account for that now. One way or the other I have no qualms of buying Standard DVD with HD DVD on the horizon. I'll just repurchase like I did with VHS, oh well.
|
yes mine have, but its basically seasonal... i don't buy many films on dvd... probably 70% of my collection is television and its pretty obvious that the television dvd season runs august-november for alot of the major releases...
|
My buying has definitely slowed down over the past couple months but not for lack of titles I want to own or because of the new formats. Rather its because we just had a baby and she has a way of dicatating what I do with both my free time and my finances.
|
In decline? No, but I've become a more discrminating buyer, after loading up my collection with certain base titles(Leones, Hitchcocks, etc.) and personal favorites. I'll now only buy what I think are one-of-a-kinds (I don't expect to see the Herzog/Kinski collection on HD-DVD/Blu-Ray anytime soon), or well produced sets with lots of replay value. Also, Netflix has saved me a ton of money. Re-sell value means nothing to me - this is my last format and I'm staying with it for the long haul, even if I have to stockpile standard dvd players in my basement!
|
I never purchased massive amounts to begin with but my buying is now basically limited to TV on DVD. I find I'm much more likely to sit down and watch a few episodes of a TV show than a single movie (even if all the episodes take longer than a movie). I'm discovering some fantastic shows and just a few purchases can last me quite some time.

After losing count as to how many dvds I have (1700-1800? I guess), the wife complaining that we have too many dvds (yet she won't purge her chick flicks), and the ever growing unwatched pile, I have to admit it is time to slow down. No more double dips unless it is a dramatic improvement (i.e. anamorphic for instance), and Hamlet (Kenneth Branagh version) is my only wish list title at this point. With the exception of new releases that I really want, I've acquired what I want. Furthermore, I sense a need for a dvd purge coming soon, but that is always difficult for me to accomplish since I have sold titles before only to reacquire them later.
|
No, if anything the rate I buy them is steady or increasing. The reason is because I don't really care about new releases for the most part. I am way more concerned with exploring the history of cinema and as such I mainly buy classic and foreign films. As I watch more and more films, I discover more and more directors and then want to see more films by those directors. My wish list has hundreds of films on it, and I could potentially buy at least at least a thousand DVD's that I would be interested in seeing. But of course, finances hold me back.
