Picked up the collector's edition at CC on Tuesday. Had the 21.

Got the Target Tin yesterday. 10 scenes.

Just got this from Amazon today, 21 scenes!

Bought from Costco on release day and it has 21 scenes.
I read thedigitalbits report and I came to my own conclusion: FOX targeted this DVD to comic collectors, who fall for those "variant" items everytime Marvel (or DC) produces them. Look at comics today, and almost every issue has 5 to 10 variant covers, each one more "exclusive" (less available) than the other. Marvel does the same thing with their Marvel Legends toy series and since DVDs are today's hot item, they have struck with this bs of 10 or 21 deleted scenes, with or without the tin or comic book, regular or deluxe edition, with bonus dvd or without it. I think I read about the planning of this ploy about the time the Punisher DVD was about to be released in Wizard, the guide to comics. Just my 2 cents |
I think that is some of the reasoning behind exclusives...not sure if that holds true for this botch...i returned my copy with 10, and found a 21. That opened dvd will go back to fox as defective...they made no money on it...

The funny thing it that this type of greedy thinking is what brought the business down for both the comic and the Toy collector's market and they are repeating the same formula with the DVDs. |
I would have given my right arm to say xage was full of shit but no dice--I got a Target tin with 10 deleted scenes. But, in the end, who gives a shit? We'll get 'em all with the 2-disc S.E. next year or in '08--there's plenty to distract myself with DVD-wise in the meantime.

i typed most of this last week, & meant to post MUCH sooner, but stuff comes up, yknow..
-target- so last tuesday i went to target to pick up the metal tin version, it was difficult to find at 1st because a clerk & some lady were blocking the display.. she was trying to find out if the box set had fullscreen or widescreen, & i suggested its probably widescreen since i dont remember any fullscreen versions for the 1st 2 movies, but she wanted fullscreen anyway.. then i grabbed the metal tin & finally used the $5 giftcard i picked up w/ my name is earl, thinking $18 ($23-$5) was the best price i could get on the collectors edition.. until i got home & noticed the tin had some small dents i didnt notice, because i was in a rush after taking so long to find the thing.. then opening it up, i saw it was just the regular dvd, & a very small looking reprint of a comic i just grabbed off ebay in august.. not the 100 page comic or 2 disc dvd i thought was included.. the dvd was individually wrapped, & had a small white sticker covering the barcode, that was easy enough for a careful person to peel off.. after rechecking the posts here, i realized the 2 disc version is only out in r3, & learned of the cut scenes mix up.. so i decided to see if mine had 21 scenes or not.. but it didnt.. at least the label glued on back was small enough to fit inside the tin though.. (i just cant stand leaving those things on, or throwing them away) .http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/6167/24yv7.th.jpg.http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/8572/new10ac0.th.jpg.http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/3796/new11gh8.th.jpg.http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1084/new12mu1.th.jpg .http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/7813/new15hf2.th.jpg.http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1442/new13tw5.th.jpg.http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/3281/new14vj4.th.jpg.http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/4118/new17to8.th.jpg -best buy- irritated & still wanting that 100 page comic.. the next day, i decided to just go grab the collectors edition at best buy, this time making sure to not grab any dinged up copies, & the 'ultimate xmen' cdrom for $2.. (it was available free w/ preorder right? eh..) i also had some reward zone certificates, but i forgot to bring them.. this time i wasnt disappointed to see the same dvd because i was expecting it, & the packaging is much nicer on this version, the box even has a bottom so the comic doesnt fall out the way some dvds w/ comics do.. dvd not wrapped this time, & the white sticker was on the keepcase.. pulling out the label to check the barcode, both had the EXACT same upc, 00 & everything.. but unlike the one w/ the target tin, this copy had 21 cut scenes! & the label glued on back fits inside again, with the comic & dvd.. (you could almost fit the whole thing inside the target metal tin, if it werent for those round corners..) .http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/372/25tw2.th.jpg.http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/3010/new1um9.th.jpg.http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4061/new2xo7.th.jpg.http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/2579/new3zr2.th.jpg .http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/6318/new4ze9.th.jpg.http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/7775/new9nd8.th.jpg -barcodes- 0 24543 39531 7 21 = target metal tin 0 24543 37392 6 00 = dvd inside target metal tin 0 24543 37392 6 00 = dvd inside stan lee edition 0 24543 37411 4 50 = stan lee edition everyone keeps asking about those barcodes, but it really wont help, all these dvds are 1st printings, barcodes only reflect intentional differences.. their only choice is to either recall, or let us keep the extras, we should only be getting 10 cut scenes, so for once a mistake works in our favor.. (not that you have to look at it like that, since they are clearly releasing this reduced version just to double dip w/ the missing features/etc later) but chances are, any future printings may have a barcode variation, making them guaranteed to only have 10 cut scenes.. -cut scenes- both dvds have 43 files & the same volume name "STANFORD_BRIDGE" (why not 'XMEN3'?), decrypting & comparing each dvd on a file level returns only 8 variations.. .\video_ts\video_ts.bup different .\video_ts\video_ts.ifo different .\video_ts\vts_06_0.bup different .\video_ts\vts_06_0.ifo different .\video_ts\vts_06_0.vob different .\video_ts\vts_07_0.bup different .\video_ts\vts_07_0.ifo different .\video_ts\vts_07_1.vob different ignoring the ifo & bup files, thats just 2 vobs, the one holding the cut scenes & the one with the menus pointing to them.. 10 scenes, 3 endings; 01. Beast Recites Shakespeare (1:09) X-Jet Lands in D.C. (0:33) both eggs are on both dvds.. .http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/734...6922nd7.th.jpg.http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/774...7688ri6.th.jpg http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=152 i also remembered the promo dvd that circuit city was handing out contained 2 cut scenes, so i checked it against the others.. 1 of the scenes is from the first group of 10, & the other isnt.. so if you got stuck w/ a 10, then theres at least 1 scene to watch on the promo.. but dont get your hopes up on that, the scenes on the promo dvd dont have the commentary, & the picture is 4:3 letterbox.. .http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/380...0461mv0.th.jpg so counting the endings & the eggs, thats 26 total.. -target comic- the target comic is 34 pages, reprinting giant size xmen #1 (1975, 68 pages).. i actually dont have giant size xmen #1, but i have an old reprint called xmen special edition #1 (1983, 48 pages) which features the same deadly genesis story, & then an extra 12 page story w/ kitty & illyana.. the deadly genesis story is broken into 4 chapters, so im guessing the original comic had unrelated stories mixed in? after comparing both reprints, the mini target reprint appears to have been recolored, & possibly redrawn..? the detail is better than my 1983 reprint anyway, despite being smaller.. but its also missing 2 pages from chapter 3..!! .http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5395/compareik9.th.jpg.http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/7...singkb8.th.jpg its not a factory defect, its a design flaw, if it were a factory defect, there would be 4 or more pages missing from the center, these missing pages are far from the middle.. & not that it matters, but the pages are also offset, rather than include images for the inside covers.. for 'giant size xmen' i find this new compact & incomplete 34 page reprint to be a little ironic.. i went ahead & made some larger scans of the missing pages (from my 1983 print), so anyone here who got the target version, can actually read the story properly.. http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=new22qp7.jpg http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=new23cr9.jpg -stan lee comic- the stan lee comic is nice & thick, featuring xmen 1, 4, & 9, plus the new stan lee exclusive story, & before each section there are some words from stan & a page to showcase the original cover.. everyone shouldve read those early xmen stories by now, theyve reprinted them enough times, but the exclusive parts are nice.. although i wish the price of the set were lower, paying close to $10 extra just for a comic seems a bit steep.. (hey, im a collector, gotta catch em all..) i think i read somewhere that a few of these were autographed by stan lee.. did anybody get that? (of course itd be a printed 'autograph') -cdrom- ok, i only just started getting back into comics, so i havent seen much since around '95.. apparently joss whedon is writing for xmen now? (was that this title or another one?) one thing that really pissed me off about this thing though, is how little respect pc games & stuff like this are packaged with.. no shrinkwrap, just some cheap security stickers holding it closed, try pulling those off & you WILL tear the packaging.. -_-; & then theres no insert or documentation.. blah.. other than that, ive been too busy to see if the disc is any good, but it should let me know what to expect from other marvel rom collections that ive been meaning to buy.. apparently it uses adobe (ick), but at least its not demanding i upgrade my os.. -conclusion- i dont like buying multiple copies of things, especially of dvds w/ barely any extras, & i hadnt planned on doing it this time either, i thought the target version was just the collectors version with a metal tin & some stupid cards.. normally id let my family have dibs at any duplicates i have, but i try collecting xmen, so i decided to just keep both versions this time.. (since the discs are technically different) after finally watching the movie, ill have to admit i was a bit disappointed, though im surprised its not the change in director i had a problem with, the writing just dropped the ball a bit too often.. (then theres technical aspects about the characters vs comics) but then, i did just finally watch silent hill the day before, & that turned out to be immensely better than expected.. so i may have been a bit spoiled at the time |
oh, i almost forgot!
some people were complaining about the walmart promo, if you dont want it, i do! i only have a few recent promos to trade, probably nothing too rare though.. & was there any info on a fix for the walmart promo having false info? if i could get both versions then i want both.. (assuming the one described was ever produced) i also figured out the beast egg, w/ a google search.. http://www.dvdtown.com/easteregg/x-m...edi/19573/701/ (its kinda small, no wonder i missed it) |

My region 2 doesn't have some of those scenes, specifically the Logan returns to Alberta one.

Region 3 has 'em all. Tho I haven't looked for the Beast/Shakespeare egg yet. EDIT: A few hours later.... unfortunately, both of these eggs are in 4:3 letter box rather than anamorphic, & of course theres no commentary.. |
Does the Target tin dvd come with the barcode in tact? I got it for a gift and may just stick my dvd in the tin and return the dvd inside with my Best Buy receipt.

You're talking about the Korean 2-disc tin, right? How is it getting around the Korean menus? |

I meant mine is Region 3 too, the last deleted scene I can choose is the Iceman/Rogue one.
|
ok, picked up the bonus disc at wally world and got the 21 scenes, thank god.
Also, is there any word yet on fox doing a replacement deal or something with the walmart bonus disc not having movie featurette and only comics featurette? I'm actually excited to see the comics featurette, just wanted to know if there was more info. out there? Just checked and damn Wolverine solo movies are fox too, can't wait for the non proper release of a 2 disc set right off the bat in R1 and what is with fox and that damn heat sealed shrinkwrap, always get residue on the spine. What again is the poor man's version of goo gone, is it rubbing alcohol or wd40? |
I recently got an email from Fox regarding the Wal-Mart Bonus DVD error replacement, and it looks like they will not be sending out replacements at all.
Copy of the email I received: Hello, I am sorry to inform you that we will not be offering a replacement disc. It appears what should have been advertised was the comic features not the cast interviews that are not available. Thank you Fox Consumer Services Since I received a copy of the film, I'll just sell the movie to a friend, but I'll keep the case and artwork for myself. Did anyone else receive this email from them? |
So, with stores restocking, are people who have bought this DVD more recently finding more with the 21 deleted scenes rather than the 10?
|
Any word on a Special 2-disk Edition yet? I had a hard time passing on the DVD for $8.98 today.
