All Quiet In The Western Front

help me decide which one I should get. I realized that this one Is a remaked of this one

I also found out on http://www.imdb.com that there is a director's version shown on Tv which contains 30 mins more. Example of a scence cut is after the Kasier awards the metal the uncut version shows the boys complaining about who recieved the metal, talking about having to remove the new uniforms so the next group will look good for the kasier, and other anti war talk/questions.

Is this director's version now on dvd?

The first image is the remake, the second image is the original film. Which has been restored to as complete as possible condition as far as I am aware. It runs 130 minutes, though rumors of it originally running 140+ minutes circulate. It was recut many times for censorship reasons over the years down under 2 hours or so from what I have read. Thus the Universal release is as complete as it is ever going to get.

According to this review, the current Universal Region 1 disc of the 1930 Lewis Milestone original (the only one worth owning, IMO) did not use the Library of Congress restoration, unlike the Regions 2 and 4 releases from (respectively) the UK and Australia (also from Universal).

If you have an all-region DVD player, I would go with either the UK or Aussie release (whichever is cheaper--they appear to be identical). Otherwise, I might wait for a Universal re-issue in Region 1 based on the restored elements and--hopefully--with some decent extras.
