I'm sure the "#1 Animated Comedy" is just a placeholder for marketing the DVD.

Count me in as disappointed and rather surprised that there's so few extras.

I totally smell a double-dip (this would be a Pixar first). If that's the case, I'll just take the old one to a place that buys used DVDs (they make double-dips easier to swallow)

I wonder if they're saving the extras for a BD release (and/or HD-DVD if Disney decides to support it).

I don't think they would make the extras exclusive to a new format, but I don't think they're ready to release it on BD just yet. We may see the second DVD release come out when they do decide to do that.

Actually, A Bug's Life was the first Pixar double-dip on DVD. Disney initially released a single-disc version in April of 1999, which contained FS and non-anamorphich letterboxed transfers, along with the "Geri's Game" short and both sets of the fake outtakes. Disney then followed up in November of 1999 with the 2-disc collector's edition that included an anamorphic transfer of the film and increased extras.

The Toy Story DVDs may also cout as DVDs depending on what your opinions are on new releases of films on OOP DVDs, and the fact that the newer DVDs had new extras on them that caused some people who had the old releases to re-purchase the films.

Sorry, forgot 'bout those, I wasn't too crazy about "Bug's Life" so I ignored that one, and I have the "Toy Story: Ultimate Toy Box" so I ignored that one too.

They also had higher bitrates for the video, and audio (in the form of DTS tracks), than the original versions. That was what compelled me to purchase them, at a discount.

However, it was five years later! DVD had come so far, and I didn't see it as a lame cash-in as much as "refined" editions for new buyers (and/or those that want the absolute best A/V quality).

I loved A Bug's Life. Kevin Spacey was GREAT.

But being a Pixar fan, this news doesn't sound good. Maybe they'll change it to 2 disc set....

For those who want a 2-disc Collector's Edition DVD and have it be filled with features, a petition has been written. Please sign your name. Thanks!

Actually, Toy Story had a higher video bitrate on the original DVD. Toy Story 2 did experience a bump in video bitrate. However, looking at the DVDBeaver comparison screenshots, I can't see any real difference in video quality between the two.

So it's not a double-dip as long as the releases are several years apart?

I'm willing to *bet real money* that the Bonus Features that we *should* have gotten on this release are being saved for an eventual dual layer (50GB) Blu-ray release!

Has this "officially" been announced? I think video retailers just have a tentative release date.
It's been officially announced:

Really? I just bought the Toy Story 2 disk CE, I think '10th anniversary edition', and it says 'highest bitrate ever on a Pixar film' or something. Is this the 'original' dvd, or was it the second [non-ToyBox] release? Or is the marketingspeak on the back of the package a lie/incorrect? It did look good, whatever it was, and I never got an original release.

Well, I did provide a link to check the comparison youself, here it is again:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...dvd_review.htm

As the link shows, it's not the Ultimate ToyBox version, but the subsequent 2-pack release of the films, which had DVDs identical to the separate film DVD releases.

The comparison says that the Ultimate has an averate bitrate of 7.39 mb/s compared to the other's bitrate of 8.39 mb/s. However, looking at the bitrate graphs, I think these numbers may have been inadvertantly switched.
edit: I emailed the webmaster, and he checked and corrected the numbers

Still, looking at the screenshots, there's not an obvious difference in video quality. Both releases came from a direct digital transfer of the film, so it's really only the compression ratio and algorithms that set the video apart.

Whatever the case, they have got to release CARS in a Two-Disc Collector's Edition. Please sign the petition:

Also, spread the word to other sites!

Same here with my son. I'll end up buying it regardless of the features and probobly buy a deluxe version on the next format.

Even though I don't think it'll help, I signed the petition on the outside chance it might sway someone back at Disney.

Thanks to all who have signed the petition. Keep spreading the word, and get as many people to sign the petition as possible. I'm going to send this to Disney by the end of this month.

Looks like R4 is getting an exclusive bonus DVD:

I'll bet BB, CC, Wal-Mart or Target will be getting this out here.

Lots of screen shots of the menus and some packaging scans at:
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/...ic.php?t=16955

The picture of one menu indicates that the running time of 'Mater & The Ghostlight' is 7:06.

I pre ordering this from CDWow for $27 shipped. Checked on CDwow again but it looks like they took down the page for it.

I just got the dvd - here are the extras and their runtimes:

- Master & The Ghostlight 7:06
cute little short featuring Mater, along with all the other characters.

- One Man Band 4:30
the Pixar short shown w/ Cars in the theaters

- Epilogue 4:17
basically an extended ending - more of the same

- Inspiration For Cars 16:00
not really a "making-of", but more of a "making-why".
not a bad feature, and not too EPK-ish, like others of its ilk.

- Deleted Scenes 10:25 total
4 separate scenes - nice to see, but they're basically
just rough, hand-drawn and (barely) animated storyboards.
w/ intros from Lassiter.

And it has a 4-page insert/dvd guide that most Pixar/Disney dvds have, along with the typical coupons and ads.

So you're looking at almost 45 minutes of (actually pretty solid) extras.
The big giveaway of a coiming double-dip is that there's no commentary and no real info on how they actualy made the film - though I'm pretty sure they used computers....

New Pixar Edition includes second disk of interviews with Pixar employees entitled "Why the **** did we sell out to the Mouse?"
