Paramount/King SEs: Cujo, Sematary, Dead Zone

Davis DVD reports some fun news:

Paramount will be releasing Special Editions of Cujo (1983, Lewis Teague), The Dead Zone (1983, David Cronenberg), and Pet Sematary (1989, Mary Lambert) this Setember.

Not two weeks ago I got The Dead Zone from DDD. :brickwl:

And didn't Cujo used to be a WB title?

marty888 05-22-06 08:44 AM

The current <i>Dead Zone</i> is anamorphic, so whether or not I upgrade will definitely depend on the quality of the extras (Cronenberg commentary?) and what reviewers have to say re: any improvement on transfer quality.

I can live without the other two.

xfilekr 05-22-06 09:30 AM

I think Cujo was put out by Artisan/Republic Pictures (I have it in a box set w/ Langoliers and something else) I wonder what kind of extras these could have?

flashburn 05-22-06 10:00 AM

Wouldn't mind picking up The Dead Zone SE if they do an HD-DVD release of it.

theatrically, it was released by Warner Bros.

Put me down for a Dead Zone upgrade, but only if it has substantial prticipation from Cronenberg & Walken. The audio and transfer on the current disc is fine.

Mountain Biker 05-22-06 02:35 PM

Nice. I'm in for all 3.

Thanks for the info.

Julie Walker 05-22-06 02:36 PM

Hopefully they will use the correct print on Cujo this time around. It's been reported that a tv print may have been used on the Artisan release. Since some language is obviously cut out.

Numes 05-22-06 04:10 PM

I ended up buying Dead Zone from the UK (specs from DVD Rewind):

R0 United Kingdom - (Sanctuary Digital Entertainment)
Commentaries:Audio commentary by screenplay writer Stephen Jones and film critic Kim Newman
Extras:24 Page Collectable Booklet which includes international poster art, biographies and the script for the deleted scene
Trailer

If there is a substantially more extras (especially any Walken/Cronenberg participation), I will upgrade.

basaro 05-22-06 09:14 PM

What's the OAR for Cujo? The current version is 1.33:1, isn't it? I always thought this was P&S, so I never got it.

What language is cut? I've seen the Artisan disc and it sure looked like the same old R-rated version that's been around for years. The violence is definitely all intact and I noticed no dialog changed. It will be nice to have a widescreen release, however, instead of the open-matte Artisan one.

JesseCuster 05-22-06 09:32 PM

The Dead Zone is a terrific adaptation of King's work and IMO on par with Frank Darabont's King adaptations as the best translations of King's work. Highly underrated with a great, nihilistic performance by Walken.

ReduxGuy 05-22-06 09:56 PM

I thought Paramount was also gonna do SEs of Thinner and Freeway (not a King novel, but just as creepy) as they own the Republican library now.

Josh-da-man 05-22-06 10:03 PM

I'll probably be picking up "The Dead Zone," and possibly the others, too. I don't own any of them yet, and I've been toying with the idea of getting all of King's films.

I don't know for sure, thus I said MAY contain a edited print of the film. Since I recall some people reporting swearing being cut out and so forth.

But since I never picked up the dvd myself. I don't know for sure, thus have only heard it may be edited.

Drop 05-22-06 10:46 PM

Sounds good, hopefully they get great treatments. I haven't purchased any of those yet, so I guess I made a good choice.

On a King related note, Does anyone know about a new release of The Stand coming out? I can't seem to find it available for new on a few websites. That tells me they stopped producing copies, which signals a new release.

The Void 05-23-06 08:21 AM

Of course I bought the Dead Zone a couple weeks ago during the DDD Paramount sale. I would have waited but now I'll probably just keep the current disc, the transfer and audio are fine and they'll probably be carried over to the SE as is.

Patrick Mirza 06-13-06 11:48 AM

Hi res artwork for The Dead Zone has been posted.

cerial442 06-13-06 12:14 PM

Can't say I'm a fan of that cover art. Stephen King's name is bigger than the movie title.

However that won't stop me from getting this.

critterdvd 06-13-06 12:17 PM

Ya the titles kinda weird, and I am actualy a little bit shocked that they didn't try and make it look like the tv show as a way to tie it in...

Doughboy 06-13-06 12:44 PM

It'll have to be a really nice SE for me to triple-dip. I already have the original Paramount release and the R0 UK SE with a pretty entertaining commentary(despite Cronenberg's absence).

Filmmaker 06-13-06 12:57 PM

That is some egg-suckin' artwork, obviously meant to match the newly revised covers for SILVER BULLET and GRAVEYARD SHIFT. Blech...

Scott Weinberg 06-13-06 11:01 PM

But what about the Cujo release? Hrmmm.

Geofferson 06-13-06 11:19 PM

Agreed that the cover art is lame. Will still be picking it up though.

DrStrangeL0ve71 06-13-06 11:44 PM

I don't own Dead Zone so I'll wait for this release but that is a really horrible cover.

Fincher Fan 06-14-06 12:01 AM

I'm all over a new Pet Semetary release!

Never a dull moment.

Extras for PET SEMATARY and THE DEAD ZONE have just been posted.

I hope Cujo has just been postponed and not cancelled. That was the one I was most looking forward to, as the current dvd looks just terrible.

Yes you are because it is the first story on that link.

The $14.99 retail price helps cuz I really don't see too much that makes me wanna triple-dip on The Dead Zone, unless those featurettes are really long. The lack of interviews with Christopher Walken or Martin Sheen is a shame. And no Cronenberg commentary either.

Filmmaker 06-15-06 08:04 AM

Dude, you posted this retort how many hours later? Trust me, when I clicked on the link originally, the update about DR. MABUSE, THE GAMBLER was the latest update on the site...

Notice, in typical Paramount form, that the extras don't mention the trailers...might wanna keep hold of that original release of THE DEAD ZONE...

Patrick Mirza 06-16-06 02:16 PM

Hi-res art for Pet Sematary has just been posted.

Filmmaker 06-16-06 03:30 PM

"Sometimes the original cover is better."

Patrick Mirza 06-16-06 04:16 PM

I dunno... I never liked the theatrical one-sheet with the big head of the dead jogger. I kinda dig the new artwork. It looks like one of King's paperback covers.

Wick 06-16-06 04:22 PM

The new artwork is alright; it's relatively creepy. However, I'm still partial to the artwork from the original release/VHS. To each their own. I will still be picking this set up, even though I already own both Silver Bullet and Pet Sematary. I'll most-likely just sell the earlier releases that I own, though. I've been wanting to see The Dead Zone for a while now, so I guess I'll get my chance when I buy this set.

Tenacious D 06-20-06 12:44 PM

Has anyone heard anything else on Cujo? I was excited about that one too.

mattressman 06-20-06 10:16 PM

I hope this Dead Zone DVD is worth it. I'm always up for more Cronenberg.

Davy Mack 07-03-06 02:55 AM

That doesn't look like the "PET Sematary" on the cover!
