When EMPIRE STRIKES BACK was released on VHS, it was one of the first to be released with HiFi audio. The sound was absolutely amazing compared to the standard mono and linear stereo audio of other tapes at the time.

Works fine for me in Firefox.

I tried it in IE for yucks, and it doesn't play in that browser.

Classic! I remember watching this with a friend. So many excess costume changes for Caroline Munro.

As for the OT finally coming out: what crazy, surprising and exciting news! Now I can retire my VHS box set and maybe even get rid of the DVD box set. I've got to search this thread for specs, if it's not to early to see if some of the special features are crossing over to these new releases...

As far as we know, there will be none.

You can show your disapproval of Lucas by buying a tshirt from him:

purists will need to purchase a patch for the sleeve, however.

Terrell likes to pretend he can read, but has shown throughout this thread that he lacks any basic comprehension skills in what he reads. As soon as whatever he reads shows itself to be a criticism of George Lucas, he instantly shuts down and can't read any specific points within the criticism.

In this specific example, he has decided that people are criticizing Lucas for "changing his mind", which is not true. People are criticizing Lucas for the fact that they bought inferior (or "only", as Lucas put it) editions of the movies based on his adamant statements that the films would never be released correctly, and that they're being roped into buying those inferior versions *again* to get the versions they wanted in the first place.

Maybe some people are criticizing him for changing his mind, but most people are criticizing him for the amount of contempt his actions show for the people who made him a billionaire.

[Now, personally speaking, I'm not criticizing him for this, because I never believed a word of it; maybe I'm cynical, but I think Lucas is too smart a marketing guy to *not* take one more oppurtunity to remove a bit more money from the fans' wallets ... so I thought from the word go that he was lying. However, I do think that lying in order to sell a product is a pretty shitty thing to do also; I would criticize him for that if I had any proof ... but, then, I imagine proof wouldn't dissuade your from your defense in the oft-persecuted Mr. Luke S.]

If you're going to be a total Lucas apologist, you should at least apologize for and attempt to justify the things people actually are criticizing him for. And if you're going to twist the wording so far as to be completely removed from the original criticism, you might as well not bother responding ...

But I do so love the way you keep adamantly sticking to your belief that people are always unfairly criticizing Lucas and do so *only* because it's Lucas, and not based on anything Lucas has actually ever said or done.

Love the quote, hate hate HATE the goofy cartoon picture and, as a result, have decided not to buy the shirt. Get rid of that awful graphic and we'll talk.

I don't hate it that much, but hopefully it'll be altered at least a little before release. This part in the product description gives me hope:
Image listed is a prototype and subject to change.

They've already done the cleanup work; releasing the original movies costs nothing extra. It's a big f-u to the fans: "you'll buy any crappy thing I put out if it has 'Star Wars' on it, and I'll laugh all the way to the bank".

One example of bootleggers getting it better than Lucas himself...

I wouldn't exactly call Scott Kurtz (http://www.pvponline.com) a bootlegger. That shirt's been around for awhile now.

I'm not reading through 20 pages. Are the commentaries that are going to be on it, new commentaries?

I would just like to add that the "Faces" laserdisc collection I own shows no visible matte lines around any star ships. I would therefore be surprised if the DVDs did show these.

I know it's been said before, but the slogan is inaccurate.

It should be something like "Only Han Shot", but that's not quite as catchy is it?

As I understand, the original theatrical cuts are the special features. Officially, these are re-releases of the 2004 special edition cuts. (Which likely means we won't get classic artwork for a nostalgic effect, as I was hoping.) The bonus content is each film as it was seen in '77, '80, and '83. Each SE disc will probably feature the same commentary as before. I'm guessing these will be essentially like those in the 3-disc limited set.

Hopefully they'll also include the commentaries from the LD's for the original cuts.

Those were so sporatic, random, pointless, and nearly universally panned, that I doubt they'd revisit them on these... although I suppose it couldn't hurt to just shove them on there.

That's not even remotely true. Restoration work was done almost 15 years ago, and it's been sitting since then. Bringing the originals up to the level of the most recent SE DVDs in terms of contrast, detail, clarity, cleanliness of print, would require a massive undertaking that would make the 2004 effort look small by comparison, both in terms of work and money. Even when Lowry Digital Images was doing the work on the 1997 SE footage, they claimed that the footage was some of the worst they've ever seen when it came to print damage, color fading, and dirt and debris on the image. Now you can imagine what kind of shape the '93 negative is in.

I've said it time and time again, and I think it holds true. This is my own personal opinion. Lucas isn't just going to slap a letterbox LD transfer on a DVD and call it quits. Lucas will clean the originals up quite well, and we'll have a nice anamorphic widescreen transfer. I personally expect a transfer about as good the The Thing and The Fog DVDs have, maybe slightly better. That is unless Lucasfilm decides to go all out as he did on the SEs. But I don't think you can expect a transfer as good as the new DVDs.
