How do you organize your collection?

After I finish building a second set shelves to accomidate my DVDs I was going organize them and alphabatize them. I'm sure it won't last long for the alphabatizing, but I thought it would be good if the kids could find their movies easier / faster.

So my thoughts were kinda basic, but after reading certain posts I think you guys break it down extensively. Here is idea

Television
General movies (PG-13, R, Unrated)
Kids

But then I was thinking a section for Disney movies too. But thats pretty much the kids section. Maybe I should make it Classic Disney. Or maybe the 3 sections I had will be plenty, and I'm just over thinking this a bit.

My Criterions are by spine, and Disney/Animateds are separated. After that, it's all alpha from there.

Everything is alphabetical, but this summer I'm going to seperate my tv shows from the films and put them on different shelves.

Live action TV shows - alphabetical by series title, then sorted by season order
Animated TV shows - alphabetical by series title, then sorted by season order
Documentaries - alphabetical by title
Movie series - alphabetical by title of series, then sorted by year of release
Live action movies - alphabetical by director's last name, then sorted by year of release
Animated movies - alphabetical by director's last name, then sorted by year of release

There are only two problems I find with this system.

1) Boxsets where each film doesn't have a separte case. This doesn't so much matter in cases like the Alien Quadrilogy or Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection, where the films would be more or less grouped together anyway, but things like the Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection don't really fit the schema and have to get their own section.

2) Series that don't have proper titles. Do Kevin Smith films get filed as the Jay and Silent Bob series, the New Jersy series, or maybe under Clerks?

My films are organized alphabetically by director's last name and then chonologically within the director. After that I have my few music DVD's organized alphabetically by artist and then chronologically, and the finally the couple of television series I have alphabetically.

Just alphabetical, with TV (only have 2 season sets) and concert dvds just thrown in as well. Only a shade over 200 dvds, so no need for more breakdown than that at this point.

Alphabetically, by director's last names.

I want my Altman, Robert's together. My Allen, Woody's together. My Kurosawa, Akira's together. And each director's work is then chronological. Exactly the same way my CDs and books are organized. (I don't file my books or albums alphabetically by title, why would I do differently for films? Auteurism RULEZ to the XTREME! Cowabunga!)

TV shows get stuck at the end, as though they were "various artists" sets (most TV shows are directed by multiople directors. there ARE exceptions, of course; The Office (UK) and South Park come to mind, but those are (for lack of a synonym) exceptional.)

I recently rearranged my collection by influence - directors, genres, or particular films in a rough chronology that show my progression as a movie lover.

Right now only a small portion of my collection is organized as I've overflowed my shelves. The rest of my DVDs are in a few different locations throughout the house in no particular order. I really need to find a shelving system that I like.

Either by date of purchase, or by spine color, depends on what mood I'm in.

Horror overflow in the bedroom and on one side of the living room, everything else on the other side of the living room. I am also overflowing at the moment and have about 150 that are piling up in our room.

Criterions - Spine #

Films - Alphabetically

TV - Alphabetically

Box Sets - Alphabetically

If I had kids, I would separate the kids/animated Alphabetically as well.

I used to have the complete Superbit collection which I sorted Alphabetically, but since I sold a bunch of them, they are now just included in with the other films.

Also, when the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray titles start coming in the door, I will sort them Alphabetically as well.

Alphabetically. Most of my friends think I'm OCD for even doing that.

I will never understand why people organize Criterions by spine number.
