Anyone who expects them to be is only fooling themselves.

But HBO's pricing is always much more expensive than comparable box sets from other studios.

I don't have HBO, and buy the majority of their series on DVD. I have absolutely no problem with their pricing, because I know the production quality is going to be way up there, all the time.
Of course I'd like to get these for $30-40 like some of the other network shows, but if you look around, or wait a couple months, you can find a good price. Most stores will have a halfway decent price on release week, and after that, you may find it used, or at Costco or Sam's for a reasonable price. Other than that, there's always rentals.

For those who will be watching the series for the first time on DVD, give it a few episodes to warm up. It starts off a little slow, but it gets A LOT better as it goes.

I'm looking forward to this. I started to watch it on HBO and was enjoying it, but I got really busy and wound up deleting the episodes to make room on the DVR. Now I'll finally get to catch up with everyone else.

Just got mine today. Very impressed with the packaging. The box is very solid. I think it's made out of fiberboard or some type of wood. Very Nice. I hope to get a chance to start watching it tonight. I'll post some thoughts/reviews of it later if anyone's interested.

As for the price of the box set, consider that HBO spent an average of $4 million an episode on the series. Consider the probably the most expensive network show, LOST, has about the same per-episode cost:
http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/559/559892p1.html
Now, consider that Rome got about half as many viewers as LOST did for their premeires:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_%28TV_series%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome_(T...)#First_season
Now, I don't know about the relative per-person values of advertising revenue vs. subsriber revenue, but I imagine the former is larger. So, with the same size budget as a network series but with a smaller audience and thus smaller revenue, it's not surprising that the box-set costs more than network shows do on DVD.

Has anyone else received their set and started watching yet? The video presentation is great but there seems to be a glitch, at least on my set. I have watched 3 discs so far and on all of them, during each episode, the English subtitles have turned themselves on at random intervals. This seems to be a player-specific problem as it occurs when watching on my Toshiba player but did not occur when I tested the discs on my parents' LG dvd player. Anyone else had a similar experience with this set?

I'll wait for the eventual HD-DVD box set...you know its coming the question is WHEN? Also, is there any chance with the way technology is going that either format would be able to put an entire season on just 1 disc and not suffer any picture quality? Will we ever get to that point?

It's also not likely to even happen with the two current HD disc formats. Both sides are working on multiple-layer discs that go beyond just the two implemented now. However, if they can't implement the extra layers into the spec soon, it will probably be too late in the formats' lifespan to change the spec.
